uhm... okay... looks cool. i hope they´ll make a remake of a japanese movie called "VORTEX", too. That would be REALLY interesting... The original title is UZUMAKI, check it out if you see it around. One of my Top 10 Horror movies.

I've always felt Gore Verbinski lacked in every film he's made. I really hope he doesn't ruin this one.

Ever tried not to wipe over your TV when it gets dusted? Ever noticed the ring, made of dust in the center of your TV, perfectly sized as the ring in the movie? Scared the sh*t out of my girlfriend, ha-ha ;)

Hey I've watched the Ring 6 times in one day cause I loved it so much. But when I woke up in the morning there was blood on my pillow and on my nose. My nose was bleeding through the night. I thought it was just a coincidence. Then the next day, I woke up and my TV was blaring Static at full blast. I swore I turned it off. I was a little freaked out. Then when I got downstairs my phone rang. I picked it up and they said "6 Dayz left," then they hung up. I am really scared and my 7 DAYZZ will be up on Sunday. If you want to e-mail me before I die, my e-mail is drummer_gurl333@hotmail.com. And yes, I have seen "The Ring."

Here's my first stab, Anna Morgan (mother) couldn't have children, she kept having miscarriages, so the Morgan's tried using some fertility drugs they used when breedig horses to have a child themselves.  Somehow, because of the potent and strong drugs, the child they had was a freak of nature, with some supernatural abilities.  Hmmmm.

What do you mean "she strangely came across this one"
At the interview with the psychiatrist, the doctor holds up a picture of baby horses in a womb. And also a picture of a rocing horse in a womb.
Somewhere along the line, horse fertility drugs were used so samaras mother would become pregnant

THose sonograms are actually pictures that samara made herself.  Remember when the doctor asks her how she made them and she says she thinks of them and they just are?

RE: Aidan and Samara Same Person   > reply

The tape was Samaras perspective of things. That's why nothing actually "filmed" it. I think Samara was demon possesed or something. Don't forget, Anna Morgan kept having misscaraged, but on Samaras birth cirtificate it said "Live Birth" not addoption.  And Richard (Anna's Husband) said that "He had no child" which makes me think that Anna banged up some other guy. The reason you could be saved for making a copy, and showing it to someone, was because all Samara wanted was people to know what happened to her.  I admit, Aden DOES look a bit like her in the video #SM005 or whatever, but when she's standing infront of the well, she looks COMPLETELY different.

WELL.... in the movie it said Samara was adopted... and Killed her mother after coming out of the birth canal.
He said he had no child because he didnt want anything to do with her. Samara said while in front of the video that Daddy didnt love her... remember?

Well I do not think that aiden and samara are teh same person, it is like that movie, sixth sense, he can talk to haley joel osment, because he is a kid, and he can be trusted, and as for Anna morgan banging up some guy, could it be possible that she sold her own soul for samara's conception leaving her true love (horses) damned, and causing samara to be evil?

During the interview with samara and the psyciatrist at i the movie, the psychiatrist holds up an image of a sonagram showing baby-horses in a womb? Can anyone-explain that?

RE: Aidan and Samara Same Person   > reply

In reality, what happened was, the parents couldn't have a kid. So, when they went away, the mother went to this crazy doctor and he injected whatever inside of her and she got pregnant. The daughter was crazy so they sent her overseas to all of these scientists and they couldn't figure out what was wrong with her. Then they sent her to the psychiatric place to try and figure her out. When they couldn't decide either, the mother killed her so her daughter couldn't hurt anyone.

hey what if some crazy doctor figured out how to implanted an egg and sperm in a horse and thats where samara came from. mabey thats what the pics that she made symbolized and mabey thats why the horses kept her awake.

60
RE: Aidan and Samara Same Person   > reply

No. The reason the horses kept her up was because her father put her in the little space in the barn next to the horses.

RE: Aidan and Samara Same Person   > reply
Posted by A random shemp (No Email) on March 31, 2003 10:51 AM

The reason Samara's father said "I have no child" is the same reason Samara is a freak of nature:  Anna was impregnated by a horse.  She is an abberation of nature.  That's why Anna finally killed her.

ANNA WAS NOT IMPREGNATED BY A HORSE!!!!! Anna's eggs were planted into a horse, most likely a guy horse. Anna could not have HAD samara after 67 miscariages? Wanna kno where i got that statistic? go to the ring web site and click on "mother", and then "dont watch this" and it has a freeze frame from the adoption papers saying anna had 67 miscarriages.

Then again in her sonograms, she also made a picture of needles poking at a person. So maybe her mother was injected with needles.

O.K I'm with you on this one. We just watched the DVD and on the Don't watch this segmant there was a diner (or workplace) scene that was not in the movie. In the scene one of the locals mention that you shouldn't mess with nature (or something to that effect). So, my theory is that they experimented with some hormones that they had tried out on the horses. The horses ended up diseased with something that drove them mad. The girl was born but she developed psychic abilities and never slept. She could read the minds of her parents and knew her dad didn't want her. I'm not sure about the necessary evil in her so much as after she died she maybe got into the heads of her parents driving them mad also.

they did look alot alike.... i don't think they used the drugs the had done with horses. i just think samara was messed up because her dad loves horses more than her and makes her sleep in barns.

first, i dont get how come the mother killed Samara, after she worked so hard to get a child, and second, how come you had to make a copy of the video to survive

60
RE: Aidan and Samara Same Person   > reply
Posted by A random shemp (No Email) on November 12, 2002 12:18 PM

the reason that you had to make a copy of the movie to survive was because samara wanted people to hear her and by makng a copy you're spreading the word about her pain and trauma

Heres an interesting idea:

If everyone who watched the tape, made a copy of the tape and destroyed or hid the copy from anyone else viewing the tape, then the cycle would immediately be stoped, i.e. there would not be anyone elseto die, seing that the only people who die are the ones that view the tape.

Also this question should be answered: How do theese people die? (suicide, murder by samara, or death from extreme psychological trama from viewing the tape?) Cany anyone explain that

RE: Aidan and Samara Same Person   > reply

althougn she made a copy, it was the copy that the kid saw, so someone also has to wastch the copy or else the copier will stilll die

Well they were all Scared to death, the faces of Katie and Noah... well  and how the tape was made... it was never said when it was made... but by the look of Samara's body and the age of her father I'd say a few decades.. The kids in room 12 did not "make" the tape they took that tape from the front desk and tried to record over it.. when they went to watch the game later, thats when they came across "The Tape"

120
RE: Aidan and Samara Same Person   > reply
Posted by A random shemp (No Email) on March 23, 2003 4:48 PM

Heres my therory on how copying the tape gets out her word

We know she wanted to be heard and thats why she copied it and was saved but when Aiden watches the COPY version Samara starts to come out of the well (not in the original) so maybe each time you copy the tape you get more of it. So to complete what she wants shown you need to keep copying it for the full thing.

RE: Aidan and Samara Same Person   > reply
Posted by A random shemp (No Email) on March 25, 2003 2:30 PM

I think Samara "made the tape" by "burning" it. She made the picture on the barn wall and made the pictures that her doctor had in the same way.  When the kids tried to tape the game, Samara burned her images into their tape.  Remember that the TV was right over the spot that where the well was located.

120
RE: Aidan and Samara Same Person   > reply
Posted by A random shemp (No Email) on April 4, 2003 10:44 PM

I think the tape "was" just as the pictures the psychiatrist held in the tape.
She said "I don't draw them. I think about them and they just ARE" (or something like that)... so she thought abot the movie and it "was".

i have a question: why was the place with the cabin where the kids first got the video, the same place where the well was at the end? i thought the well was near where samara lived which they could only get to by ferry? why was the well near the cabin?

Wounldn't work. You have to copy the tape and show it to someone else. If you just copy it, you'll die anyways.

RE: Aidan and Samara Same Person   > reply
Posted by A random shemp (No Email) on March 15, 2003 9:32 AM

this is just my theory, and my friends, on how the people die, and why they look like they do.  Samara comes out of a tv, why, i dont know, like she did to the guy, and remember the water was coming from her feet and stuff when she came after the guy, and katie (the girl in the begining) walked upstairs, and samara was already waiting for her because water was already coming from beneath the door.  Samara kills them by making them go through what she went through in the 7 days, in an instant. The people go through the 7 days in a well in a second or two. Thats why they look all waterlogged and stuff. Thats just a theory on it/

nah the copy wasn't important they just made a copy to be on the safe side, u had to show someone else the video tape in order to stay alive by spreding the word etc.

RE: Aidan and Samara Same Person   > reply

They made the copy at the end and it was extremely important. She specifically used Aden's figure to hit the record buttom so that he would receive credit for the copy and therefore be spared his life. To say that this final copy has no importance is Absurd and incoherent dribble.

The rason she killed here daughter is because she placed the horrifieng images in her mothers mind. So she killed her daughter. That is why she was placed in the mental intutution

1) Anna Morgan
( Mother ) was insane we know that, but Samara drove her and her husband crazy. Samara drove the horses to their death will her telekenetic ability
( explains it in the Ring0 Japaneese version ) and that was too much for Anna,
2)In the original version of The Ring Samara didn't actully kill you, a virus that infected you through the tape did. The virus had to multi-ply to live so if you made a copy of the tape, that would be letting the virus live and multiply.

Possibly they are both unwanted, and this is why samara 'shares' knowledge with aiden?

Aiden calls his mum Rachel to emphasize the distance between them - she doesnt spend enough time with him?

From what I understood of the story:

Samara was evil in and of herself.  The parents knew it, as she placed horrible images in their minds when they were around.  Also, I doubt she was human, or at least an average one.  She never slept.  Not insomnia, she literally NEVER slept.  I *THINK* there is suposed to be an element of mystery in regards to where she came from; obviously, she wasn't born from Anna Morgan, and the only explanation the Morgans ever gave was that they "went away one winter and came back with Samara."

Secondly, Anna killed Samara because, well, Samara was evil, and admittedly malicious.  ("You don't want to hurt people, do you?"  "But I do...")  Samara put tormenting images in the minds of her parents and the horses, the images were too intense for the horses, horses kill themselves.  Same result with her parents, even though Anna tries to stop the images by killing Samara.  Didn't work, of course because (say it with me) Samara never sleeps.  Anyway, Samara finds a way to spread her pain and malice even after she's dead, using her supernatural power to implant images in one's mind.

Basically, in the American release at least, the storyline is supposed to seem fairly predictable.  The hackneyed plot is that someone is direly wronged in life, murdered or betrayed or so forth, the deceased return as  ghosts to leave clues about their untimely demise, and usually these stories end with the protagonist finding the corpse of the victim buried in some half-assed attempt by the murderer.  The remains are given a proper burial, sometimes the murderer punished, and suddenly the ghost goes home happy.  Hurray.

This movie gives way to a false climax (generally not a good thing) in what I thought was a good way to create a really frightening and suspensful conclusion.  ("Don't you understand Rachel?"   "She never sleeps.")

I'll try and cover some of the details that may have been misunderstood-

Blurry photgraphs:
Face as seen underwater (Where Samara was...)

Becca in mental hospital:
Must be divided from television because she must have seen Samara come through Katie's (in the beginning.)  Samara did not kill her because she had not watched the film.

Scratching photo faces out in pen:
Similarity to Samara's hair covering her face (best seen in Aiden's drawing.)

Flaming tree:
The tree with red leaves outside the cabin; at sunset the sun filtering through the leaves made it seem like it was ablaze (I just wanted to use the word 'ablaze.')

Aiden's encounter:
The guy Aiden saw in the street on the way to school was Noah (his father.)

Choking:
After taking a sip of water, Rachel begins choking and pulls an electrode out of her throat.  Electrodes were placed all over Samara during her psychiatry session to monitor brain activity.

I can't think of anything else at the moment...  sorry.  Hope I cleared something up for someone.

you are right, but why did samara come out of the well when aidan saw the copy? why could rachel remove the fly from the copy? who was the girl in rachel's dream, not samara the other one? how did the two friends die in the car accident? and how did smara kill her victims, also, why did samara never sleeping matter, why does it matter that samara was free, and, finally!, what where the nose bleeds about and who where they going to show the tape to???

* Samara came out of the well when Noah (the father) saw the tape because that is what happens of the 7th day at the same time you watched it last time (noah watched it at 8:01). at the end of the tape, just when you see a hand, the tape finishes, but on the 7th day, it starts from there and she comes out of the well, and out of the tv.
*Rachel could remove the fly from the copy when paused because it was showing that there was a thin line between real life and what was on the tape (which clearly is shown on the 7th day, when she get's out of the tv)
* not sure about the dream (i remember there was someone on the chair with blood around them)
*the two friends dieing were not needed (they might show it on ht edvd when it comes out under features)
*not exactly sure how she killed her victims (scared the sh*t out of them??)
*not sure about what the nose bleeds signified, but what about the glass of water, half full (the first girl in the kitchen, left the jug half full. Rachel left the jug half full, started talking on the phone and choked. the physc looking after samara in the hospital when she was young and asking her questions in the room - his glass was half full, too. i think that a bad thing would happen to them when they drank from a glass and left it half empty.
what do you think of all this? stupid? makes sence?

I sort of got the impression that the only reason she came out of the well when it was Nohas turn to die was because her body was removed from the well before he was to die. Whe rachael fell in the well they pulled the girls body out of it, then mysteriously the segment of her coming out of the well was added to the "tape", because now she was free

She came out of the well for everybody because she died in there.  That's why everybody was drenched in water once dead.

If you watch the movie again, and watch carefully, you will see in one of the scenes her head and hands are out of the well, then real quick it turns to static, I think they were foreshadowing.

When she walks out of the t.v at the end of the 7 days, she has her hair down, not allowing you to see her face.  But when she looks up at you, and you can see her eyes, this kills you somehow.

As far as I can tell the reason Aidan calls his mother Rachel is to represent the distance that exists between the two of them.  Oddly enough, Aidan, during the whole movie gets left alone, neglected really.  Samara experienced similar things, being locked in the attic of the barn.  Though it isnt the same by any stretch of the imagination, there is a lack of caring or love shown to both children, perhaps this is why Aidan knows all about Samara, perhaps she speaks with him because to a certain degree he has experienced some of the same things she has; a mother who doesnt care as she should, a father who doesn't want them, etc.  Aidan calling his mother Rachel has nothing to do with "him being from the states" cause none of us do that here numb nuts.

Aiden cared for himself.  Remember towards the middle of the movie, he get's  himself ready for the funeral.  Get's dressed in his suit by himself.  Towards the end he makes his own lunch before he goes to school.  The kid was neglected, and grew up fending for himself.

I think Aiden calls her Rachel becasue she is always working and they make reference to that a few times during the movie. So I think it's because she's not really a mom to him but more of a babysitter in his eyes.

Let's say Samara and Aidan are the same person just reborn.  Aidan/Samara would call Rachel  Rachel and Anna would be called Mom

You die when she comes out of the t.v. because she scares you to death.  Literally.  That's why the faces of the dead are contorted the way they are, and their heart just stops.

I think that the people who watched the tape experienced what Samara experienced in her 7 days in the well.  For example, early on, she surely choked on water, as did her victims....water becomes a main theme as time goes on and is of course all over the floor when Samara climbs out of the TV to get her victims.  I'm thinking the same thing with the nosebleeds--just something Samara experienced when she was in the well.

As for where Samara actually came from, it was never stated in the movie that Anna COULDN'T have a child--she had in fact been pregnant many times but miscarried.  I do remember Mr. Morgan saying she WASN'T SUPPOSED to have a child.  I think there was some weird deal with the devil on this count.

In Rachel's dream, she goes in a room and sees Samara sitting in the chair, sourrounded by water. The water is from the well. When Samara grabs he arm, she sees a flash of someone being videotaped just like Samara was, but she has short blonde hair. COuld it have been Rachel?

HOW SAMARA KILLS READ!!!   > reply
Posted by sexy_angel_babe (Shady_Saphire_Eyez@msn.com) on April 1, 2003 3:28 PM

In the novelized Ring, victims of the video curse are described as looking into reflective surfaces at the moment of their death and being horrified by what they see (a vision of themselves horribly aged). So basically Samara doesn't necessarily come out of the TV rather, what victims are seeing is a projection of what would happen to them if THEY were in the ring for seven days, in short, WATER DECAYED!! Scares em to death. My theory is that when Samara crawls out of the TV, she uses her NENSHA (ability to implant images from her mind to somewhere else) to implant the image of them into their minds which, mirrored by their brains, makes it come true. just a thought.

Arright last time i said that i completely screwed it up. heres now it really goes. after 7 days, she comes out of the tv, but how does she kill you right? well she uses her nensha to plant the image of how you would look if you were in the WELL (i said ring last time lol) for 7 days like she was. when she looks at you, you see that image in her eyes, which literally scares you to DEATH. get it now?
and for the question of how the teens could have died in the car, christ maybe they had a tv in their car!!! lol no im kidding, but it is possible. but i think samara uses the next media device availible, in this case, the car radio.

1. Whose to say Aiden himself isn't psychich? Remember, him seeing Katie run up the stairs in his mind? His drawing of the house? It seems logical to assume Aiden is either a reincarnation of Samara, or he's psychich.
2. I have no idea... Maybe flies were Samara's only friends in the well, although I can't see flies being in such a closed area...
3. I could not tell exactly WHO this woman was, although I am convinced it was the dead body of Rachel herself. The figure did have blond hair, and it was definately dead...  4. Again, I don't know, although I've heard Samara can come through reflective surfaces.
5. Never explained, although my guess is Katie died trying to hide from Samara. Unknown about Noah's death
6. I think it was beginning to piss her off because of the horses. She wanted to sleep, and was transmitting her anger. The horses sensed it, and was uneasy. She was mad they were uneasy, and its a loop...
7. Now that part has been bugging me... I have no idea why Aiden was eager about Samara, yet scared when she was free.
8. I have no idea, although if you notice, the bleedings always occured when they realized somthing big about the girl/girl's past
9. Unknown, never explained.

Hope that helps!!
-Tom

its called nensha, she can transmit images from her mind into media, as in, onto paper (how the x-rays were made), videotape (how the tape was made duh), or into other people's minds.

whoa, you really seem to be on the ball w/ this movie. I was so scared and confused walking out of it. The thing that confused me a lot was, how did she make the video? Or was it just supposed to be some wierd thing b/c she was weird girl? And Aiden knew so much more about her then Rachel, why is that? And he also had that insight with his cousin (drawing her as dead before she died). And why did the girl choose him to communicate. And lasty so Noahs assistent is Samara?

i think rachaels kid is involved becoause samara was his age when she 'died', children usually symbolise inocence in movies, he was the opposite of samara too. @ the start ray saud that he doesnt really talk, then she says abotu samara, "she just wanted to be heard' (after pulled out of well)

 RE: I suppose...   > reply

I think Samara and Aiden were not the same person, but meant to be very similar in the movie...  Rachel doesn't spend the time with Aiden he wants...  she doesn't love him as much as she loves her job.  Similarly, Richard Morgan loved horses more than "his daughter".  Both children need attention and feel seperated.  That is why Aiden refers to his mother as "Rachel" and not "mother".  Their relationship has become more business-like.  What I don't understand is why Samara talks to Aiden and not anyone else, and how he knows things that no one else knows.  Are their similarities creating some kind of link?  I don't know... but this movie sure scared the hell out of me... now I'm a little obsessed with it.

 RE: I suppose...   > reply
Posted by A random shemp (No Email) on January 5, 2003 10:59 PM

I think that Samara was simply born evil, and did love her mother, but because she was evil, she put the images in her mothers head.  Her father and everyone else thought she was evil, and so put her in the barn, to keep her away from everyone and keep things copeacetic.  The horses kept her awake though, so she put the images and thoughts in their minds or whatever, and made them go insane.  Therefore they killed themselves.  They (the parents) then took Samara to the mental institution, but they realized that that wasn't working, so they brought her  back to the island.  And even though the mother loved the daughter and had wanted her, she wanted the visions gone, and the evil gone, so she attempted to kill her, and dump her body in the well, where the last thing she saw was the ring of light around the well, hence the ring being the last thing you saw before you died.

just a stab here guys took a while to come up with, remember when in the psychiatrist, samara is asked how did u make the pictures (x rays?) she says "i see them, then they are"  Thats how she made the tape too cos she cant possibly have filmed it (no tape id stamp in vcr, no camera reflection in mirror...and theres the shot of the inside of the well and her mum dying...an event that obviously happened after samaras death)...also to the person who asked why the copy of the film saved rachels life: because as samaras father says "it spreads like a disease" Anyone with ideas and comments for me, send to sha_darim@hotmail.com.

In The Ring ( The Japaneese Version ) Samara was the real daughter of Anna. Samara was born with the ability to not sleep ( As you can see in the video, Samara watches the minutes tick away ) also the ability for telekenesis ( The ability to talk through the mind ) Samara had sent images to her parents through telekenesis.
Anna and her husband couldn't stand the images so they sent Samara to the main land for psyceatric help.
At the intstitution the docter holds up a picture of a horse. It seems like an X-Ray. She says she just thinks them up, and they're there. They couldn't get anything out of her, so they sent her home. She lived in the barn for a while. The horses were driven insane by her evilness, she invaded their minds. Her mother killed her. For revenge she burned images into a tape. ~ From Samara

Its definately not a slasher flick like Friday the 13th of Nigntare on elm street. The plots to those movies are layed out on a silver platter to you. The ring is not that kind of movie, it was "psychoscematic scary", the kind of movie thats make you leave the theater trying to put the peices together. That is what makes the movie such a horror movie, not blood or gore, but scary in the sense that the viewer really has no grasp of what is occuring in the movie. You can say the movie "sucks " or wasnt scary, that just means your not an analitical thinker. ;:-{

I can not see how this movie could be boring. I agree with the comment made about "slasher films" and that the plot is just laid out in front of you. those movie are made for people who do not want to use thier mind while watching a movie, which is fine if you like that sort of thing. But I really liked the movie. it is a shame that good movies like this one gets cut down by people who probably can't figure out Sat. morning cartoons. challenge your brains people!!!!

Oh and btw i saw the original last night and its not really worth it.  It cuts out large parts and isnt really all that scary or good.  The only thing they did that was scarier than the recent one was samara (called sadako in this) comes out of the well at the end. She doesnt really walk, more like shambles...for anyone thats played res evil, she walks like on of the zombies. Also u never see her face thru the movie, just the hair. This adds to the effect i believe. The vid doesnt really answer many questions, more likely it will just give you more to think aboout. It says the girl was most likely the product of a scandalous affair. Thats why the father hated her so much. But anywayz, seeya for now.

I loved the movie! I was so scared, the two nights after I slept with the light on :: blush :: The parts that scared me were Samara coming out of the TV and at the first when they show Katie's face after she's killed. What's really scary is that in Japan the Ring is based on a true story, suppsedly there was a horrifying tape going around that these kids made up, this one guy saw it and 7 days later he was riding his motorcycle ( With a reflective lense ( Samara can come out of any reflective serface ) and supposedly the cycleist saw something in the reflection and crashed, 7 days after he saw the video.

There is no truth behind the American movie version. Moesko island doesn't even exist. It was  digitally created by combining footage of Washington, Oregon, and CG matte paintings. There are no dieing horses, you visited a promotional site created in the UK as a tribute to the Ring, one of three promotional sites.

When Noah get's to the tape of Samara's 'treatmant' he poses as Samara's father, only to find out that the tape had been checked out by none other than....Samara's father....BUT there was a list of people before Samara's father on the checkout slip.  Could it be possible that included on the tape (ok...so just go with this one for a sec...since Samara thinks stuff...and it 'just happens') that a copy or later condensed version of her lab tape contained the images that we see in the movie, and that one of the doctors or lab techs was actually the first to see this footage....it struck them as EXTREMELY unusual footage..maybe even that they didn't remember it being there before and then.....you guessed it....RING RING "thank you for calling the seven days hotline" LOL...ok so they copy the tape...or through the process of these techies playing with it it leaks out as an 'odditie', but before anyone can really do anything with it, they keep dropin' like flies.  Samara's father last checked out the tape and had it when Rachel gets there...maybe he saw part of it that she didn't ...and he knew (like other people suggested) that she was evil and when the phone rang earlier for him the tape had hit it's end, auto rewound (ok go with it for a sec...i know it was an OLD VCR...the tape was the only way we knew it wasnt BETA...lol)...so it hits the end for the dad, auto rewinds, then ejects (just like most VCR's do if you let them play to the end)....ENTER RACHEL...ok maybe farfetched, but the first explination for the tape thus far ...AND the only other refrence to a VHS TAPE!!! in the movie :) so i'll consider myself a trailblazer for this topic of discussion

can you reply to your own comment?? o well...i am...
Here's something I wonder if we'ver overlooked...If you watch the tape (and you've already seen the movie) you understand something about it....everything on the tape is a mental projection of things that Samara has seen...I.E. The tree near the well, the ladder, the horses, her mom in the mirror (hence NO camera in the straight on shot...as Noah states), the chair ....but there's something very interesting toward the end....the image of her mother jumping off the cliff and committing suicide shows up....hmmmmmm..any thoughts guys??..how could that be if she's locked down the well....all the other images fit but this one...

Another thought on the origin of the tape...Noah said that as you record onto a tape for the first time, a digital signature is applied so they know where it came from ...wether a VCR, camcorder, or whatever type of media device.....but on the tape....NO SUCH SIGNATURE....and when a copy was made...same thing (which didnt make as much sense..but hey...i didnt write the flick).  But this is further thought that Samara imprinted the tape with her mind just like the other pictures on the negatives

THANK YOU!!! Yes, I agree that the image of the Mom "fallin" was out of place. Think about this. Samara's tape has images she sees. She saw the "burning tree" at the well/future cabin site right before she dies, right?  How then was she able to burn the image of the tree into the barn attic wall? I think she was thrown into the well by her mom who was crazy due to the miscarriages. I think Samara was not "born evil", but was made evil. She was made to feel responsible for her mother's condition. She was taken to the shrink and blamed. She was "punished" by being made to stay in the attic. All this would mess up a kid. Finally, the Mom kills her. Only, her ghost, bent on revenge, comes out of the well. Here is why I think this. In the tape, we see the Mom at the mirror doing her hair (happy because her "evil" daughter is gone) then she turns. That mirror reflects the entryway into the house. Maybe the Mom turns and then sees what we see in the next frame; Samara standing there in the entryway! We see her in the reflection (as she would see herself...as a reflection). The Mom then jumps of the cliff (guilt? Terror?).

Questions:
1.Why when Noah is getting the Mom's (Anna Morgan's) file does he find the daughters "drawings" and record number for the tape??? Wouldn't Samara have her own file?

2.If she is evil and can burn images, put thoughts in people's heads etc, why couldn't she get out of the attic? She can come through a TV but can't "fly"?  LOL!

Ok...bare with me...one more time here...Samara said in therapy that 'her father didn't love her..only the horses..he's just going to leave me here'..so we can assume that since the dad didn't care about Samara he didn't care about her sessions or what was on that tape...Maybe the mother had already seen the therapy tape after murdering the daughter (she could be among the list on the checkout slip...there were about 3 or 4 above the dad's name...remember my previous thoughts on the origin of the tape) as part of greiving for her child, she watches the tape and sees for the first time Samara's impressions....RING RING!!  Ok...so she goes mad toward the seventh day and jumps JUST AS SAMARA WAS COMING OUT OF THE WELL FOR HER!!! and then at the end....back in the well staring up at ....THE RING!!

So when Rachel visits Samara's dad, he didn't seem surprised that a reporter had stopped by...mentioning that he assumed she was there about the horses....but I don't think Rachel was the first reporter to get to the point that she had...but things had died down since then and the dad just had to know what was on his daughter's session tape once and for all....maybe out of guilt...maybe curiosity finally got the better of him...maybe both....but in the end he knew that he had to kill himself or Samara would do it for him.

I remember that when Noah went to get the tape of Samara's session it had the date DEC 9 on the checkout...I dont recall if there were any refrences as to date in the movie to know wether he died on the 16th of December or not, but if so that might further back the theory....

It's no a matter of where did the tape come from, but why a tape? That is because that was Samara's first way to commmunicate in the mental institution. The well is another history, for some parapsichologysts if a house is built above a well, paranormal activity will occur. Did anyone noted that when Noah is checking Samara's mother file, there's a paper sheet written in oriental (most probable japanese) language?

Hey..I don't know if I can say that I really love or like this movie. I love horror movies and all sh*ts about ghosts. I like getting thrills, but this movie really disturbed me and has been scaring the sh*t out of me ever since.  Ahh. I think I need to go see it again..to overcome my fears!  I have one question. In the movie, after Noah dies and Rachel sees him dead in the chair surrounded by water.  She leaves the place and sees Noah's girlfriend walk out of the building with a plain look on her face.  Why does Rachel hide from her? Did Noah's girl get possessed by Samara? I saw this question on this site, but it was never answered.  Anybody have any clues on this?

I think Noah's g/friend (I think her name was Samarah too...weird...I know he introduced her to Rachel when they all first met)was actually coming into the building, she was headed toward the elevator shaft to go up...whereas Rachel was actually coming down the stairs...

At this point in the movie I think Rachel was trying to decide if dealing with a freaked out g/friend or letting his g/friend find him like that was worse...not to mention she was still more worried about getting back to her son at this point.

When Noah's g/friend went up in the elevator, Rachel stood there as if waiting to hear the shriek of a horrified woman, but much to my the dismay of my anticipation there never was one....instead a quick cut to Rachel storming into the apartment and ordering her son to his room....

but i digress....

does anyone have any thoughts about my theory on the origins of THE TAPE!!!?????

I saw no reason to believe that "Noah's girl" had anything to do with Samara...Just that Rachel would not have known how to describe what had happened to Noah and hesitated...but then decided to just hurry home to Aiden.
I think the video would originate from the Cabin...Cabin number 12 wasn't it? since the TV was right above the well....the kids were trying to record a football game but the recession is always bad (because Samara's images were trying to get through) When they recorded the "football game" that allowed the images Samara was sending to get burned onto film.  So anytime anyone would try to record anything from that TV, they would probably get the same result (but how often could that have happened)
Also, some of the images on the tape were not things Samara had seen, she probably just made it up like the millions of people crawling around in mud and the severed fingers in a box...it's like stream of consciousness.
There is one thing about the film that I didn't understand and that is why was Samara killing people in the first place? If she wanted to be heard so bad why would she kill the people that heard her...what sort of revenge is that?
But anyway, I absolutely adored this film, I thought it was very beautiful, especially Samara's film...I am trying to find stills from Samara's film but can't find them anywhere...any help?

I am convinced that what is on the tape are things that samara has seen. Some of the things in the video like the millions of people crawling in the mud cannot be explained though, right? Wrong. If you'll remember, when Rachel tells Aiden that she has helped Samara, he freaks out. Doesn't he say something like "Don't you know what she is? She never sleeps." It is my guess that Samara is the Devil or some kind of demon or something. Images like the one of the millions of people in mud could be images from hell. Also, the part where there is a mirror with no reflection...no camera, but also no samara. Vampires have no reflection...Do demons/devils? I also think its cool how they four kids in the beginning don't die in the same way. I'm guessing they died trying to get away from samara. Also, is the name Samara symbolic in any way?...its not a very common name.

Yours truly,

Samara (according to one source) is Hebrew for - "mountain, outlook, ruled by God"....which would be to the opposition of the fact that she was kept 'hidden' instead of put on outlook, and kept in a 'well' instead of on a mountain, and 'ruled by the devil' instead of God.....

Here's something interesting!!! Remember what you said about Samara's name symbolizing something, God gave Mary Jesus, Devil gave Anna Samara.... GET IT!!!!
i have analyzed the movie with friends for days... the DVD, when going step-by-step and  playin it slowly... shows SOO MUCH that u dont know about. watch it again. the ring symbolizes more than the well and samara's eye... if you notice, when Anna throws Samara down the well i could've sworn i saw Anna wearing a necklace with a ring on it....

some people just call their parents by their first names... you could say its progressive parenting .. it halps to enforce the idea of indiviualism.. instead of roles.. in other words it help him to remember rachel is not only his mom but a person outside of the role as his mom.. and the he isnt just her kid but also a person outside of the role of being her kid... she is his mother though...

The sea of people was a reference to Dante's Hell or Inferno or something like that. There was the same reference used in What Dreams May Come. It depicts that niether heaven or hell possibility. Maybe that's where she has to be until her murder was solved (old ghost story theory)

Samara kills beacuse she is cold in water, and the heaof killing is good, rachel is called rachel because Aiden cant pronounce thr m very well, I also think ppl would die with ther face like that cause Samara would stick something in their mouth, like under her dress

The nose bleeds because the people who wathed the vidio experience what samara experienced when she was in the well for 7 days. remember when Noah asked her when she had been rescued from the well, how long could a person survive in the well she said 7 days. Not to mention they all choked on water.

She was evil in the first place. That is why her “mother” tried to kill her. Her body might have died, but her evil lived on. The origin of the tape came from the attempt to record the football game during the 4 kids stay at “Cabin 12” (built right above her resting place). Her ability to make images on video are exactly like her ability to make them on x-rays (at her stay in the mental institution, where she was probably dismissed because the doctors decided nothing was going to cure her).  She probably made the images of horses because they kept her up all the time when she was put in the barn-hidden by her “family”. So the tape started out with the four kids at Cabin 12 and spread itself from there- through reports made by investigations of the horses or the deaths of the 4 kids from Cabin 12. What’s more unstoppable than modern media?
Her origin however, is a different story. There might be some correlation between horse fertility pills and the mother not being able to have children- the mother took the horse fertility pills, knew something was different during her pregnancy and left town until after winter, when the movie said the parents returned with her. I think that the movie leaves it up to you to decide where she came from (probably to be released in a prequel). The movie implied that she wasn’t an infant upon the family’s return after the winter. So her origin is up to you. The mother couldn’t bear children and the father seems to be unable to stand the implications of her having one (and probably recognized the evil in the child as did the mother). Satan, fertility drugs, insert your own idea-
The father checked out the tape (and kept it) under his own curiosity after his wife killed herself (remember her jumping off the cliff in the tape?) because she killed her evil “daughter.” He realized the same thing that the mother did and killed himself, most likely realizing the fate of all those reporters that came to his house or maybe he knew that the mother checked it out in the past- there were 3 or 4 names before his on the checkout list- would be his own. That’s why when Noah went to check it out under the father’s alias, the guy working said that “he” was the last one to see it.
As far as Aidan calling his mother Rachel- it follows protocol of all weird movies like this- one word, Poltergiest. It’s just another thing for the audience to dwell upon  (again, probably to be released in the pre/sequel) in order to distract you from what’s at hand.
Bottom line- the girl is just like the Freddy Krugers and the Jasons- pure evil trying to kill whatever she can. Freddy did it through dreams, Jason did it at woodland camps, she does it through the video- supernatural just like the rest of em- evil by creation. Kills what she wants- maybe through the use of water, maybe through the use of pure horror. But just like Kruger's glove of knives and Jason's mask, water is her calling card. She may, more or less, be defeated by the end of the flick, but defeat doesn’t mean the end of supernatural spirits by any means. Expect prequels and/or sequels… the movie was really good. Makes the imagination wonder and scares you at the same time. I’ll have to see it again to confirm or reject my hypothesies.

Why did Adain call his mother "Rachael"? Because she was his child. She did not nurse him; he nursed her. As a courtesy, he might as well consider her a peer. Adain was a good boy, but he knew things, just like me.

Why did I have to kill? What point? Oh, but what point not to? After all, I was taught to at a very early age, wasn't I? Mother (Anna-- I do my respect her)killed my body by throwing it into the well. Worse, she and my "father" tried to kill my images. Have you ever been gagged? Told your words and thoughts did not matter? Told to say nothing about the things that matter most to you? Yes, they tried to kill me, long before the Ring became my focus (theRingwasmylifemyonlyhopetheypushedmeintotheRingforareason), by stopping my Pictures. Put me in a barn (thetreetheburningtree), Put me off-island into an institution, and when the pictures persisted, they took me back and tried to murder the whole of their only living daughter (theonetheydidnotkillatconceptionconceptionisdeath).

What else do I know of the world but death to those that love and create?

They came to the Ring, to sleep and recreate. They came to the cabin, to the Ring, not knowing. And they gave me a new medium to imprint on; the tape that sat for days (sevendayssevendaysitsaneternitythatsevendays) directly over the Ring, where it was so easy to transfer my . And others then came, didn't they?

I touch so many

I think he calls his mom by the first name because in the very first introduction, she tells the teacher at least twice to call her "rachael", and he might have heard it and stuck with it. Oh, and as for the blood out the nose, it's a fairly common theme in horror films. Supernatural 'stress' wasn't meant to be handled by human brains, and it gets traumatized to the point of bleeding through the nose. Well, that's my theory, anyways.

oh yes.. i just came up with another reason of why he calls her rachel... maybe its not about the individualism thing ... maybe...
well... remember when she went to pick up aiden at his school.. remember how unconcerned she seemed when the teacher showed her these disturbing images?? thats pretty uninvoled parenting.. maybe she was just a work-a-holic.. it definatly appeared so.. remember how katie.. his cousin ..was his "best friend" .. spent at least three nights a week babysitting him .. because the mom was working late... remember... when rachel said at the end of the movie.. that "she just wanted to be heard" ... and she talked about how kids try to communicate with their parent or others... with crying .. screaming or pictures.. refering to her own unattentivness.. to her son.. it took something like almost looseing him .. to pay attention to him.. welp my point is that maybe he didnt call her mom.. cause she really wasnt much of a mom... until the end anyway...

Hi there. I saw the flick last night, in a preview in Frankfurt, Germany. I'm not so much into scary movies, but this one is tempting me to go back and see it again, although it seriously disturbed me, beyond the usual scare.
I think Aidan calls his mother by her first name because he sees himself as peer to her. He can take care of himself and does take care of her (e.g. the dress). His eyes seriously unsettled me. I don't want to wake up with this kid staring at me. He reminded me of Damien. Maybe Samara speaks to him and show him images because he's so close to Katie, and Samara kowns of him. They're alike in their quietness, but I don't think either him nor Noah's gilrfriend (is her name really Samara too?) ARE Samara.
I'm sure Samara made the tape just like she the made the x-rays: she imagines them and then they just are. I think she kills because she can't help it, like she tells the therapist. I think the tape kills the ones who see it because they suffer Samaras terror out of nowhere. Her situation probably got worse and worse each day - these teens and Noah are hit by this doom just by watching a tape and they are faced by a seven-day death sentence, just like that. As people are, on the seventh day they're are prone to die. They slither towards the seventh day, receiving signs, like the nose bleed, like a horse sensing the presence of horror and going mad, like the hand mark on their arm out of a nightmare, like the images in their heads, that they cannot ignore. And after seven days of fear they're so immersed in that reality, her reality, that there is no boundary between the two anymore and Samara comes to them.
There's still tears welling up in my eyes when I ponder this movie, and I get shaky. It's beyond scare and it fascinates me.
I think it would not even have been necessary to show her face so clearly (though it was brief). With that face hung with hair, reflections from her eyes and a hint at her bloated decayed face (like her chin or mercilessly unexpressive blue and white lips) would have been just enough for me, but that's probably why I'm not a director.
Anyway, this is my kind of horror movie.

i don't know what reflection the other dude was asking so sorry.
but regarding aidan calling her mother by her first name, i think it's because he feels more mature than her mother(scene where they are were going to be late for the funeral? aidan was already dressed and had readied and ironed rachel's dress??). rachel was young when she got pregnant (obviously...workaholic single parents don't look that hot do they!?!?) she did not have time to mature making a living for her and her son.....don't believe me??? trust me i know.
BY THE WAY, HERE'S A PRETTY LAME ASS PRANK!!!

This movie is a really great scare.  I thought the best bits were:
1- The faces of the victims which you briefly see; Katie at the start (her mother is recounting how she "saw her face"), and Noah right at the end.  Why wasn't more made of this?  It would have been scary also to show Katie's friend Becca witnessing her death, rather than having the movie just report later that she (Becca) is in a mental hospital.
2- The way the crazy horse "trips" over the side of the ferry; this is much freakier than it simply jumping into the sea
3- Samara's face as she kills off Noah, which follows a minute or two of build-up so that you know she's going to look very nasty.

I still don't fully understand the chronology of how the Samara thing kicked off in the first place.  We know that she drove her mother mad.  This was partly because she caused the deaths of their horses.  Then we know her father imprisoned her in the barn loft, because she was "bad".  But this must have been before she killed the horses because we learn that "the horses keep me awake" (is this torment the reason why she "never sleeps"?  Or if she never sleeps anyway, how can the horses be keeping her awake?).  Anyway, we find out that Samara was sent to a psychiatrist and then to a mental institution on the mainland, after which the doctor on the Island says "things got much better".  But they can't have gotten much better for her parents, since her mother evidently retrieves her from the institution to take her up to Shelter Mountain and puch her into a well (do you get wells in the mountains??). Then her mother dives off a cliff; presumably back on the island.  The her father manages to cope with all of this for the next 24 years despite newspaper reporters digging into shy their horses died, and he only kills himself when Rachel arrives.  Why then?

I know everyone has a ton of questions about this flick.  That's part of the fun: the film leaves you speculating, and you can explore possible scenarios and you feel like you're tapping into the warped mind that is this movie and finding things in there that you have not actually been directly shown.  And you're getting closer to the source of the horror than you were taken....  ooo-eeeerr..  That's great!

Anyway, here are my top nit-picking unanswered questions from a continuity/plausibility point of view:

-- Were the four kids that saw the video in Shelter Mountain Inn the first ones to see the video?  It doesn’t seem likely because Katie’s friend Becca already knows the “urban myth” of the video before any of them have been killed, and a guy at Katie’s funeral knows about the tape too. But we see Katie telling Becca that they had used the videotape to record a football game on, and they got the Samara nightmare instead.  So it sort-of sounds like the tape was created by them doing this.
-- We are led to believe that Aidan has drawn pictures of Katie buried underground the week before she died; as though he could predict the future.  But later in bed he suggests to Rachel that Katie had told him she did not have enough time, and that he interpreted this as meaning that she was going to die.  So if this was why he drew the pictures, it’s no longer so remarkable, but Rachel does not pick this up, or appear very interested.  Furthermore, if Katie has told him she is going to die, why does she keep this quiet from everyone else?  In the opening scene with her and Becca, she is apparently not too worried about death until Becca recounts the urban myth to her; and this reminds her that she saw the video and got the 7 days call exactly seven days ago.  But if she’s told her young cousin the previous week that she was going to die soon, would she really have forgotten about this as the deadline (pun intended) crept up?  What’s even stranger is that she is capable of winding Becca up with her faked death right before she dies for real, and right after having received Becca’s corroboration that the “video that kills” story is something true.
-- Why aren’t we given more of a hint of what it was like for Becca to witness Katie’s death, or find her dead or whatever?  Evidently she does see something, even if it’s “just” Katie’s horribly contorted face on death, and this sends her insane.  It would be really scary to have shown more of this, but we don’t see Becca again after she has answered Katie’s phone, and the next we hear about her is that she’s in a mental institution.  In the post-funeral scene there is a very brief clip where we see what is presumably Katie’s mother finding her dead in a closet (Brilliant – again this should have been more than just a flash-frame).  This must mean that she find’s Becca in her freaked-out state also, but there’s no mention of this.  Katie’s mother wants answers because she finds the medical explanation (heart attack) for Katie’s death implausible – wouldn’t the scenes she found in the house that night be more of a pointer?  When Rachel finds Noah dead, the TV is still on and there’s water all over the floor.  Had all this disappeared from Katie’s house by the time her mother found her?
-- Why is Becca shielded by a screen when walking down a corridor in the mental institution?  Is it something to do with the TV?  (which would suggest she saw Katie experiencing a Samara-out-of-the-TV style death).  Come to think of it, in Katie’s house doesn’t she (Katie) unplug the self-activating TV, then go to the kitchen to shut the self-opening fridge, and then go to the foot of the stairs to call up to Becca?  And when we next see her she is back upstairs on the landing about to enter a room that is flooding with water and has water on the door handle – and her mother finds her dead in her own bedroom, so is this the place it happens?  We know there is a TV in her room because the girls are watching it at the start, but how can Becca be in the room with the water.  Can only victime see the water?
-- Since this takes place 24 years after Anna Morgan died, and therefore at least that long since she pushed Samara down the well, why is there no account of anything that happened in the time gap?  Of course, videotape would have scarcely existed at the time of the nasty events in the Morgan household.
-- The other three teenagers’ deaths were reported as suicide or car accident and in no way mysterious.  Why?  Is this just (Samara’s) “luck”?  The only way Rachel picks up anything odd is from the coincidence of the times of the deaths (10pm)
-- When Rachel watches the video the very last scene is of the well from outside (or maybe the inside-the-well scene is the final one; doesn’t matter).  But when we see Noah watching the end of it, I’m sure we can see Samara start to climb out of it, which we didn’t see before.  Any ideas?
-- What has Noah’s assistant going into the elevator up to his apartment after he has been killed got to do with anything?  No consequences; no follow-up. Why do Rachel and Noah struggle with each other and the video controls when trying to fine-tune what we later see to be the lighthouse?  Rachel then has to go and do this at her workplace.
-- There is a fly in the video the first time Rachel watches it.  But we later realise that none of this was shot through a camera, but “projected” from Samara’s thoughts.  We see the fly later when Rachel is trying to isolate the lighthouse image, but this time the fly is real.  I think we see it again one other time and it is within the video image again.  What’s going on here?
-- It seems quite incredible that anyone can survive a fall down a well that looks to be a hundred feet deep and no more than four or five feet wide and has only a few feet of water at the bottom, but Rachel (and Samara) both survive.

OK, I just saw this movie and came here for answers, which I got most of.  To the last comment, the reason you didn't see samara come out of the well the first time is because the director didn't want you to.  Notice how it was blurred and cut short when we saw it the first time?  I suppose this was to makle it scarier or something.  And I am in equal disbelief that anyone could fall down such a deep well with only a few feet of water in it (and a concrete floor?) and survive, well, at least not be injured.  I think everything else was explained in this thread.  The only question I have is why are samara's powers specifically related to electronics?  More specifically television and telephone?  I don't recall the movie depicting anything in her life that correlates to tv and/or phones.  My only guess is that since she has these demonic/telepathic/teleprojecting powers and can use tihngs w/ electricity more easily than something like pen and paper.  But I dunno, if anyone would care to speculate, please feel free to do so.

someone asked "why videotapes?"

i think it was because in her room in the hayloft all that she had was a t.v.....and a chair...and a rocking horse.....one of the images on "the video" was a chauir...she probabaly just sat and stared at her own reflection sitting on the chair for hours on end because the t v didnt work.......frustration i guess.....

Did the tv "not work" in the loft or was it not plugged in?  I didn't notice cords plus it would be a heck of a long extention!!!

I have an interesting question, well 2 actually. In the beginning, Katie died right after she opened the bedroom door, yeah? So how exactly could she have been found IN A CLOSET??? Did Samara put her there? And at the end, we can easily see that Noah was flat on his back on the floor when he died, so how did Rachel come up and find him IN THE CHAIR??? Again, did Samara put him there?

I think the ppl experience the seven days in the well then crawl out of the TV like Samara.Noah was stunned by the experience so he sat in his chair and Katie was so afraid that she went into the closet. But after they got to their destination, they went into a dream where they are the ones in the well and then all of a sudden Samara takes them under water and shows them an extremly horrifying face, then they die. Half of drowning, half of being scared to death.

I watched this movie last night and was like, "OK, that was soooo not scary.  This was not what I expected!"  Until...I realized my mind was racing and I couldn't go to sleep, and when I finally did, I woke up for a bathroom visit, and was soooo scared to get out of bed that I had to wake up my fiance and turn the lights on!  Okay, so I guess I was pretty scared.  I am at work right now, and everyone in my building is gone to lunch, and I am scared here!  LOL!!! So, I guess this movie just makes you think a lot.  Now, I had ALL the same questions you guys had,and I agree with most of your assumptions.
~I believe that the Morgans used the horse fertility drugs AND I also sort of agree with the deal w/ the devil thing.  I think they were just trying soooooo hard to have a kid, that they just didn't get what they bargained for.  I am still confused about a lot of stuff, but I am going to watch it again this weekend and try to come up with more conclusions.
~A lot of people are concerned with why they took Samara out of the mental hospital, and if you go to the official movie website and look through all the stuff, it shows different papers that explain some stuff.  There is one that says they took her out of the mental hospital against medical advice.  You guys go to that website and look at the stuff and tell me what u think.
~I also wondered about the thing in her throat (electrode???)
~Also, I don't think that noah's g/friend is Samara, I just think they were made to look alike to confuse you....along with Becca.

Let me know your comments at Jenna_x7@hotmail.com.

Did anyone notice the fly on the door when Noah goes to the mental hospital archives for the interview tape?
It appears to move in exactly the same way as that on the nighmare tape, around in an anticlockwise circle.

Just something i noticed!

I did notice that the 2nd time I watched the movie.  I think it was a clue for him to know he was going into the right room.  I have a questions...so, was Anna Morgan placed in a mental hospital before or after Samara was???  When Noah goes into the records room to look up information on Anna, he finds information on Samara, too (the SM0015 note written on Anna's information.)  And Samara's Xray drawings were in this file.  Why would they have both of their information in one file?  Also, why does he try to call and "warn" Rachel about Samara's father when Samara's tape was missing?  What was up with that???

- why does the telephone ring after you watched the video? there is no connection to a phone I see, I mean I think I understand how the tape was 'born'
- what is the connection between the Hill and the island, were the family on vacation?
- why did the father use so much equipment for his suicide, is it just for the movie?

hi

what I think was this

Anna Morgan was always unstable ( she is referred to as a woman of two halves, that one minute she was happy and proud and then  next the light would go out of her face)
Samsaras origins are recorded as a live birth -  thus indicating that she was anna morgans daughter -  but not necessarily richards. IN fact if you look on the medical records you will see that he actually requested a termination of samaras pregnancy. there are three  possible reason for this. 1) anna did some sort of voodoo deal for the child as she couldn't bear one of her own naturally ( the miscarriages) richard realised the child was evil and so wanted it dead. 2)the problem with the other children was richards genetics, anna had an affair which richard found out about and didn;t want to raise another mans child or 3) maybe richard CAUSED anna's miscarriages because he wanted his wife to concentrate on the little horsies.
whichever way samara, by whatever mechanism was possesed of pyshic abilities and so must have been aware of how much her father hated her ( i have no daughter)
What I don;t know is when samara was moved out to the barn. we know that samara caused problems for the island ( the horses adn the fish) so presumably samara was sent off to the hospital to be analysed. her unstable mother, driven mad by finally having a child - but it being so evil trys to kill her by shoving her down a well.
samara dies down there but not before mentally forcing her mother over a cliff and preventing her father from the one joy he had left -  the horses. the tape was made by her thoughts being burned pyschically onto the tape.
aidan too is psychic - that is why he has the greatest link with samara. he realises how inherently evil she is, whereas rachel only sees a damaged frightened child. samara doesn't only want to be heard- she wants to hurt.

Posted by A random shemp (No Email) on March 4, 2003 8:26 PM

I think the tape was already in the cabin (just was) and then the kids found it and tried to tape the football game on it (they didn't know what was on it) but when they went to see the game, the girl's vision was on it (as before I think).

The explanation to the rest of the tape playing after seven days is this:
The girl saw things how they happened and such (images sent by the devil?) until the part she is thrown into the well which is then closed (forming the ring, which also symbolizes the copying of the tape to survive, making a cycle - ring). Then after 7 days the girl dies and comes out of the well. So only seven days after they see the first part, the girl comes out to kill them.

When they die they look like that because they are rotten like she was (after being in the well after some time). The fly also symbolises rotness.

The girl survived 7 days because she didn't sleep or feel tired, so she couldn't drown unless she wanted to. She probably died of hunger.

I'm shivering right now...

Another thing:
The water glass and jug left half full could symbolize the thing her mother did: She almost killed her with the bag. (This came to me after remembering some guy wrote her mom made a half-ass job when trying to kill her. Elementary, my dear Holmes.)

This is a great movie, a movie for intelligent people, very well directed. I applaud the mind that created the original ideia for it, even though it has to be somewhat disturbed.

The taape origin confuses me, maybe a new tape is made every time someone tries to record something at teh cabin, and that is how it is so widely spread, people probably record something there, dont take time to watch it, take the tape home, get teh call, and pass the tape one, that is most likely how a rumour got started, samara is probably transmitting the images on to the tape to lead people to learn the story.  Aiden may be some non-evil reincaarnate of samara, thus the similarities, and the fact that their mothers are both distant, but rachel would never kill aiden.  and Anna probably did use horse fertility drugs, and maybe the ultrasound images were what samara thinks that is what her parents were trying to conceive instead of her, horses.  Because her father loved horses so much and then they used horse fertility drugs, maybe samara got it in her head that they were hoping to concieve horses and not her, ... one thing that interests me is how her hair resembles a horses mane, maybe anna sold her soul to the devila nd concived the devils child, like mary and christ, I dunno, it is 6 am and i have been analyzing this movie all night and have rad just about every post online going, andi am started to make no sense....lol good luck figurin it out

I read that the story of the ring was written by a japanese woman and the one that was just released was only part one.  There are to be 2 more movies about this evil girl and i don't think it really has anything to do with anna and richard.  she came from somewhere evil because if you listen to the doctor on the island, she talks about the visions people were having BEFORE samara died.  Sounds like she was wreaking havoc on the whole town and everyone around her and the dad knew she was evil but the mom loved her so much "some people have limits" (the doctor said) that she kept her until it just got way out of hand.  I think there is a LOT more to this story that isn't in the first movie and I'm hoping to find an english version of the original book...or wait for the rest of the movies to come out.  It seems like there is an end to the movie but it really leaves you hanging and question who samara is and where she came from.  As for the horses...i think they were just really afraid of the nightmare that she was and they could sense the evil, just as the horse on the ferry sensed it in rachel.  She's not dead remember...she's in a dark place, psychologically projecting herself into others by way of video tape or "visions".  Anyway, the most info we can gather about her whereabouts is from the island doctor so rent the movie now that its out and listen to her.

I'm replying to my own comment here... I found out that the book series is written by Suzuki Koji (a man, not woman) and only the first one has been translated and hasn't even been released yet.  There are 4 books in the series; The Ring, Rasen (Spiral), Loop and a prequel - Ring 0: Birthday.  Still don't know where she came from, only that the books center around the video tapes that she makes with her psychic powers and that the other stories don't follow the same character except for samara and the little boy... i think.  all i could find was an interview with suzuki koji and you'd have to read all the books or see all the japanese movies they were made into to understand what he talks about.

 How Samara Kills   > reply
Posted by A random shemp (No Email) on March 5, 2003 5:54 PM

So, I have read all the comments here and NOBODY has picked up on what I think the method of killing is, . . . so here goes.

At the very beginning of the film, the two girls are sitting and watching TV. One of them starts talking about all of the electrical waves beaming out of the TV and into your head. This is an important clue.

Samara is some kind of supernatural evil being. Literature is full of stories about people making a deal with the devil and getting more than they bargained for. In this case, the Morgan’s wanted a child and they got Samara.

OK, so here is the story line. Samara sends images into people’s minds on the island. The parents put her in the asylum. The X-Rays with images on them are her work. She didn’t create the X-Rays out of thin air, but she re-imprinted her own images on existing film. When the asylum doesn’t work, her parents take her out to the country and throw her down the well.

Fast forward to the night the kids are in the cabin. They put a tape in to record the game and Samara re-imprints her images on to the tape. Think of her as a radio tower of evil with a limited range. When she is down the well, she can only project her evil so far. That’s why she wants out of the well. Now, the tape is made and the kids watch it.

How does she kill them? Remember when she comes out of the TV at Noah’s place. She looks like an image projection. I think she is a manifestation of electrical energy. That is why the girl at the beginning and Noah have the same burnt faces. They are not scarred to death, Samara shocks them. A pulse of electricity would cause disfigurement and stop the heart. This also explains how Samara is able to kill the kids in the car crash. She comes through the car radio.

Anyway, nobody else has mentioned this, so I thought I would add to the mix.

Here is a clip from an interview with the author of the story.  Maybe this will help to understand it...

The idea that started the Ring was "What if four men died in different places at the exact same time?" Then I had to think of what these men had in common, something they had caught. A virus? Maybe a virus that kills exactly one week after someone is infected. So they had to be together at in the same place at that time. Then the problem became deciding on what the virus was. A toxin in the food? No, it would have to be something you could see. A ghost? No, not in this day and age.

I was thinking about this when I looked next to my word processor and saw a videotape. Oh, yeah, so I'll have the four people watch the video tape. But what's on this tape? It's not a coherent, logical story, just a string of fragmentary scenes. When creating those images, I had to refrain from thinking logically. I randomly lined up the thoughts that were floating around in my head and just typed them all out at once.

Later, I put myself in Asakawa's shoes to analyze the video images I had described. I realized that the images could be separated into two categories: images that are floating or hidden in the scenes, and images that can actually be seen with the naked eye. I had to make some distinction between the two. How could I do this? Some of the images pass through your retina, but you don't actually see them, and so you don't blink. The images that you can see with your naked eye cause you to blink and are held inside by the black curtain of that blink. And then later I inserted these blinks into the story. Well, these images that you can see as they pass into your eye, how were they copied onto the tape? Were they broadcast from somewhere? Were they the result of pirated signals? No. Then I began to think that it could be nensha (the ability to project images onto paper, photographs, etc. with the mind). Alright, so I'll go with nensha.

Then I began to read up on ESP. Before that, I hadn't been thinking of putting a psychic in the story. I wasn't really interested in it in the beginning, but I did some reading on the topic. You know, about Professor Fukurai and so on. The story of the Ring really began to unfold from there.   you can read this interview at
http://ringworld.somrux.com/koji.htm
If you read the rest of the interview you might get the same impression i did which is that the series of stories about samara don't center around the morgans.  they just happened to adopt a freak-psychic child and the U.S. movie doesn't give us any answers as to why she is evil or psychic or where she came from to begin with.

I don't know - the horses were obviously bothering her, though.  I'm a little confused on the timeline.  Did
A) daddy put her in the barn, and...
B) the horses kept her awake, so...
C) she killed the horses, which ticked off her mom, so...
D) her mommy killed her?

Also, which century did they live in?  Half the time they were wearing old-timey 1800's clothes (I saw someone else refer to this too).

Those clothes DO seem old but this was in the early 80's because samara was born in 1978.

The person that wrote the message about how samara kills..that is the best explanation I have heard. That makes a lot of sense, the best I have heard while searching the internet trying to make sense of this movie. Kudos :)

I think that the 4 teenagers in the begining made the tape, so the awakened Samara's evil. So as it was going into the tape it was messin with the electricity so it affected the phone to. And just like u copy the tape, she copies her actions as a clue to copy the tape.

I think that the phone rings because the teens in cabin 12 made the tape. Since the Tv is right over the well, and the floor looked a little moist, when they tried to record the football game it awakened Samara's spirit. So she went into the electricity and made the tape then since she was already in the electricity she messed with the phone. And she gives you a clue to copy the tape because every time she copys her actions.

I have 2 questions.

1.  Do you think calling the movie "The Ring" had a little to do with the fact that they all hear a telephone ring after viewing the tape?

I know they see the ring in the well and other places as well...like when Noah lifts his mug just before he dies.

2.  Why does Samara say "Daddy doesn't know." at the end of the hospital tape?

 RE: The ring?   > reply

here's another thought. when rachel first visits mr. morgan he says "what is it with reporters, they take one persons tragedy and  spread it to everyone else in the world like a disease." this is definite foreshadowing. if it were not for rachel's searching deeper into this no other people would have died (unless having come upon the original tape). she, in a dvd extra, places a video copy that she had aiden make, so that he could live if someone saw it, in a video store to "spread like a disease" to the rest of the world.

Heres my therory on how copying the tape gets out her word

We know she wanted to be heard and thats why she copied it and was saved but when Aiden watches the COPY version Samara starts to come out of the well (not in the original) so maybe each time you copy the tape you get more of it. So to complete what she wants shown you need to keep copying it for the full thing.

samara was not the morgan's blood daughter, she was not born by anna. when rachel talks to the doctor on the island the dr. talks about how they went away one winter and adopted a child and got the child from a woman who died during childbirth.

 why seven days?   > reply
Posted by A random shemp (No Email) on March 9, 2003 1:38 AM

ok, i got two questions and a comment to make:
1)why did it take seven days for the veiwer of the tape to die?
2)did anyone notice that samara was coming out of the whell thenm it cut to static then rachel ran in the room and grabed aiden and was screaming and all. but when everyone else saw the tape there was no sign of samara, it just showed the whell and then cut to static.
3)did anyone see the rings on the screen at  the theater, not the the olval ones in the upper right hand that are used as markers to switch reels for the film, they were little flashes of rings. the only one i can think of right now was when rachel was going to the clock tower, but in the dvd, there are now rings in the movie, did anyone notice them, or am i just insane?!?!?

No, you're not crazy--it (the super-quick cuts to the ring image full-size in the middle of the screen) was on the tape version I watched last night and I remember them from seeing t in the theater.

For the comment about seeing the rings on the screen, and asking if they were crazy..I saw those too, and when I looked up info on the film, one site said that those are purposely put there by the filmmakers, so you're not crazy :)
But I have tons of questions, please anyone that understood the movie, can you email me and fill me in???
1)Why do people die from watching the tape?
2)Why does the son know so much? And how did he come to know so much?
3)Why does making a copy of the tape spare you from dying?
4)If the little girl was murdered, why was Rachel not suppose 'to help her' like her son said since Rachel helped solve her murder?
5)Why was the little girl so evil?
6)Why does Rachel spit up that wire? I noticed it was the same kind of wire they had on the little girl in the psych hospital, but was the point of her spitting it up?
7)Was the girl really adopted, cuz on the paper that that guy finds in the psych ward, it says 'live birth' on the girl's birth certificate.
8)If the mom wanted a child so bad, why did she kill her daughter? And why there? How far is that well from their home?
9)Why did the dad kill himself with all that stuff? Hasn't he ever heard of a simple hair dryer in the tub? I'm sure that would have worked
10)Why was that tree burned in the barn wall?  Arrrggg...lol..I liked the movie, but it confused me. You can email me if you have the answers..I'm sure there are more, but I can't think of them right now. Take care everyone

Wow.. Lots of interesting stuff here.. I loved the movie. Haven't been this creeped out since I saw "The Shining"... The one with Jack Nicholson.  I think Samara was born from Anna.  The Doctor states that she was TOLD Samara was adopted, that the mother dies during childbirth, etc...  One thing I haven't seen here is when Noah and Rachel are in the barn loft Noah is looking at the far side of the TV as Rachel states how sad is was to keep her here all alone.  Noah then says that "she wasn't alone..."  I'm guessing he meant the Horses but what else?  And why did Mr. Morgan bother with all those important repairs to the huge ranch.  As far as I could see he was the only critter on it.
Also, someone commented that the paper with the Japanese writing on it was a fertility prayer....
One more thing.. If you have the DVD, try this...  From the main MENU punch the up arrow key, the cursor will disappear, then push enter...  I won't tell you what will happen... Maybe you don't want to know.

When they were up in the loft, Noah meant that she had the TV.  She wasn't alone because she was psychic and what not and had to TV.  I strongly urge anyone reading these posts to 1. read all of them because a lot of these questions have been answered in previous posts AND go to http://www.eofftv.com/r/ringu_main.htm,

Lets see how many of ur questions i can answer
1)because if u dint die it wouldnt be a very good horror movie now would it :P
2)i dont believe that aiden and samara have any sort of "connection", children have some sort of insane link w/ other children that adults dont have.
3)because samara wants people to kno that her mother killed her, and if u copy the tape she'll spare u cuz she knos u got the word out, screwy i kno
4)helping her wouldn't help, she still dint have her revenge.
5)i dont think she was evil by her will. like she said, she dint mean for people to get hurt.
6)i dont get that either
7)i think she was concieved from a horse or something gay like that
8)her daughter was driving her insane, planting evil images in her head, images she couldn't live with, and i mean seriously if u had to kill ur daughter would u do it in ur own back yard, that just makes the pain worse, its harder to live with, knowing that shes down there right beneath your feet...
9)ever heard of foolproof suicide?
10)I think that was part of her psychiopathic implantation, which takes me back to my pyrokinesis theory... well i dont think i did very good but i tried lol

there were all kinds of rings in the movie and the author of the book said he was looking a japanese/english dictionary and came across that word and liked it.  He didn't have a title till almost the end.  I DID notice samara coming out of the well when aiden watched the tape which i didn't understand.  That little boy is in the other books of the ring series too but the rest of the cast is not.  The reason it takes 7 days is because that's how long samara was in the well before she starved to death.

You'd need some pretty good equipment to get what those images mean in the subliminal messages.  I too noticed the flashes of the ring in the movie...subliminal impression most likely.

Here's something no one said...on the DVD under don't watch this, a lot more is explained...and a lot of the footage is deleted scenes and alternate scenes.  In one deleted scenes Rachael is talking to townfolk in a store and on of them tells her that Anna went overseas and came back pregnant.  That would prove that Samara is Anna's born daughter.  Why they didn't leave that in is beyond me.  Another scene shows Katies face again when Rachel is talking to her mother.  The scene goes something like they are talking then the mother opens the closet door and sees katies face again, kinda freaks but keeps composure long enough to talk to Rachel.  She also beggs Rachel to find out what happened.  Get the DVD...good footage.

I am a 24 year old Male that really gets into movies, when I tell you this movie scared the bejesus out of me thats putting it lightly.  I do have an overactive imagination so those faces are there every time I close my eyes.  I don't know how the hell I am sleeping at night.  I have since bought the dvd and watched it again simply because my father wanted to see it.  Watching it a second time you appreciate the subtle ways the images are used and distorted.  This by far is the most freaky movie I have ever seen.  I hope they come out with a sequel becuase I would love to find out more about what happened with Samara, although I'll probably be too chicken to watch it myself!

The well is obviously not at their home on moesko island but on shelter mountain.  I don't remember horses in that scene but that IS puzzling nonetheless.  The more i watch this movie (4 times now) the more i hate it.  It leaves too many questions that cannot be answered unless you read suzuki koji's books which all but one have not been translated to english.  Why does she never sleep?  She doesn't like the horses because they keep her awake but if she doesn't sleep anyway... I read that in the next movie the tape ends up in a video store because someone has to watch the copy in order for the maker of the copy to live.  I don't know and don't think anyone can find out.

RE: I am confused   > reply
Posted by A random shemp (No Email) on March 11, 2003 3:33 PM

in response to the question about the well and its relevence to the cabin,
It is my opinion that the well is on land owned by the Morgans (the winter home) and that is why they have their precious horses with them. Mr morgan more than likely sold the land after anna's suicide and a tourist cabin was subsequently built on top of it. Another idea i have to mention is the flash of samara crawling out of the well when aiden watches the tape the first time, perhaps, each time the tape is copied, she makes her way further out of the well, culminating into enough copies made and viewed that she may permanentaly return to our world. Let me know what you think about this.

Theory for the evolution of death   > reply
Posted by A random shemp (No Email) on March 14, 2003 10:32 PM

Yes, the movie was very well made. It leaves us all with our different theories and gives intelligent people some puzzling work. I know people talked about Samara giving death to the people with electricity (pardon me if Ihavent understood very well the comment), but I rather think that there must not be a scientific explanation for their death. I think as the seven days go by, the images of Samara become more and more like reality. The people that watched the tape are reliving the horror that Samara lived in the well (physically and mentally). Everything in the images came to reality (ex. the fly out of the screen, the horse that jumps to the sea and drowns, etc.). In the end, the 7th day, they live not only the surrounding of Samara, but what she truly felt. They die because she died, and they look like they could have died the same way. I think the relation that we must give to the way that Samara kills is more supernatural than scientific. Of course, you will adopt the one that you think explains life the best in general, but this is a movie.

Also, I have noticed something that might bring up more conclusions... When Rachel chokes on the wire while talking on the phone, you will notice that this wire is the one attached inside of the phone itself. Then, the communications ceased with the phone, instead of a wire in the phone, there was water coming out of the holes. The WATER that Rachel drank chaged place with the wire! Look at carefully this scene, u will know what I mean!

i believe their is indeed a kinship between aidan and samara, because if you'll notice... in almost every scene that aidan is seen sleeping, he's either faking it or immediately awake. so you get the impression of either no sleep, or very little. he does indeed share some physical characteristics with her, as well as psychosocial. aidan's mother is always working, samara's was always working too. aidan's father didn't involve himself in his life, and samara's tried his best not to.

the thing that grabs me the most, though. is the song that samara sings in front of the well. i've recently purchased the dvd, so i've tried my best to figure out just what she's singing. i've only deciphered two phrases "it never stops" and "it's never-ending". if you get around to watching the credits, keep watching still, at the end of the movie they play the song again, sort of reinforcing the idea of continuity.

i also believe samara's birth was that of natural origin, just not that of her mother, anna morgan's. it's obvious that her body wasn't suited for offspring, as her every attempt at pregnancy was a miscarriage.

i believe they fertalized one of anna's eggs and implanted it into the womb of a horse. there are too many links for me to dismiss this idea. though anna speaks of truly wanting her child, there is distance in her eyes and in her actions. this is sort of foreshadowing, just to put some space between samara and anna.

also, the "pictures" of the horse on the rockingchair looks strikingly similar to the pictures produced via ultrasound. so if samara were indeed inside of this horse, a pregnant horse [pregnant so her body would be in the proper stages to care for offspring] she would be seeing [babies can open their eyes in utero] another inhabitant of this horse's womb, only a horse, not a human. and if you remember, one of the "pictures" samara saw was of needles being inserted into the body of a horse, and an image of a human being [long-haired, we'll assume it's a girl (samara) laying inside of it]

also, when rachel dreams she's in the psychiatric hospital, she does indeed get a flash of herself sitting in a chair with electrodes all over her body. she's linked with samara, as is everyone else who watches the tape. this explains why the horse on the boat went insane after being touched by rachael. also, think about the prospect of a horse being shipped via a boat to another destination. this leans toward travel of not only human beings, but horses as well. so it may be farfetched, but assuming the horse traveling then with samara-like rachel would be lending to the idea of a horse traveling overseas with samara beforehand.

as for the deaths. i believe the expression on their faces is not only indicative of seeing samara, but also of the way she last saw the world before she was thrown into the well. with that plastic bag over her face she was no doubt gasping for breath, and nose bleeds are also closely linked with suffocation. we saw katie's death. the boyfriend, josh, he "killed himself" but we don't know how. the two friends die in a "car accident" not a car CRASH. the differece is, crash implies hitting something solid, accident does not. all of these deaths are somehow located around or near water. be it there to begin with, or brought on by samara. if you see the edited bits, put in the dvd, *spoiler* the innkeeper who let's rachel stay in cabin 12 also dies, in a boat, on water. the horses die in water. samara died in water. those who died on land were soaked in water. samara is simply lending her experience to anybody who sees it.

the horses are obviously involved in a lot of the story, so it the water, as is the way that samara died, the way she was treated by her parents, and the parallel drawn between her and aidan.

as for the tape itself. most of it is self-explanatory. the

3-legged goat: perhaps
images samara saw from her vantage point of a fetus inside of the horse.
the maggots: the maggots are tied to the flies that come flying out of the well. maggots become flies.
rivers of blood: this supports the idea of some greater evil.
thousands of bodies, flinging themselves upone one another: also, i feel this indicates some other level of evil.
the ladder: the ladder to the barn loft.
the centipede: the one in her file folder.
i do not, however, understand the severed fingers. any ideas?

i don't know, this is just my guess. i took a stab at it =D

Here we go, the world is spinning.  When it stops, it's just beginning.  Sun comes up, we all laugh.  Sun goes down, we all die.

most likely as a result of the "link" between samara and rachel, rachel sees all the things that are on the tape in real life. and i kind of understand the fingers, i mean i dont kno why they are on the tape but im guessing while samara was trying to climb out of the well she stabbed (w/e) her finger on a nail, cuz u might have noticed that there was a nail in the wall of the well with blood on it, which brings us back to the severed finger in the tape, and when samara climbs out of the tv you notice her finger(s, i only noticed one tho) was like cut off at the knuckle.

It appeared that when Samara came out of the TV her fingers were cut off at either the 1st or 2nd knuckle.  How they got that way is not clear.  Maybe from scratching at the well walls.  Remember, Rachel found the fingernail and said "She was still alive"?

in my opinion , the way they died is that she comes out of the tv...right? so, the minute she looks at you , you start to decompose ( becuz if you put the moment when noah and katie scream, and the camra zooms in on their faces, you can see they started to decompose).and when rachel was holdin samara in the well, and noah called her saying he got help and so on, she (samara) also started to decompose, so i think that the victims go through what she went through.     -just a thought

If in the movie,if someone ran out of their house while Samara came out of the T.V, would she follow you to the street in front of everyone?

Why was Rachel able to pick the fly up off the screen in that room, but not on her T.V?

What was the point of the centepede in the tape and in the guy's house?

Doesn't the the girl kill you buy burning your face w/ her hands, like in Rachel's dream when Samara burned her arm?

Lol..I agree with the whole chasing her victim out into the street, but that logic kind of plays into the plot hole situation with scary movies. Kinda like how people in scary movies always hear a noise and follow it, and say, "hello? Who's there?" Duh! Then BAM! They get slattered. People are just dumb in scary movies, so that explains why they didn't run into the street. As for the fly, I don't know what the heck that was about. I know the fly signifies the flies and maggots that were down in the well. It could have been that as more and more people watch the video, it becomes more of a reality. Like how she comes out of the tv at the end. It starts with the fly coming out. I think, like a lot of these other comments, that what happened to the victims after they watch the tape is the same as how that girl died. She wants you to experience it. I do not believe the whole being born from a horse thing tho. I have freeze framed key parts of the movie, and it never suggests that. Someone said how there is a picture of a horse in a womb, I cannot for the life of me find that. And someone said how she wasn't adopted, because at the psych ward, on the paper it says 'conception' but if you freeze frame and slowly play that scene, it says how she conceived, then miscarried, then conceived again and so on. It never says she has a live birth. I found a directors note thing for the original movie, ringu, that says how electric energy plays a part in how the victims die. If you watch the very beginning, that Katie girl talks about it. About the energy waves coming from the TVs and such. That girl uses psychic electric energy to do what she does to people. Just thought I would add my input. It was a good movie. Leaves a lot of questions to find out about :)

I thought Samara burned you with her eyes. I had this really really weird theory but it does make sense. If her form of w/e it was that could burn the images onto media... couldn't that be considered a sense of pyrokinesis? which leads to how she could have burned the tree into the wood in the barn... and burned the tree in the tape... and burned everybody's faces and skin with her eyes...... right?

I think that Samara and Aiden were two different people. But I do believe that Samara was adopted, she might have been taking some horse drugs to get rid of her problem, but all those horse drugs do (when dealing with  labor time.  They don't actually cause a baby.  That's just ungodly.

I think that Samara was evil from birth and she killed off the horses then her mom killed her because she was evil then she made the video as a map to show where she was so she could be let into the world to hurt people

ok for all you random shemps....

The Ring is a series of novels written in japan by Suzuki Koji. In the japanese originals there is a prequel.  It explains where samara came from.  Samara had the ability to do nensha (project mental images onto to a media such as film).  When she was 19 her doctor found that she was a hermaphrodite and he killed her by throwing her in a well.  She survived and somehow projected her spirit to be reborn into the body of anna morgan.  by this time she is veneful to say the least and is in fact reborn from anna morgan.  now the tape idea differs from the american version in this way:  in the original novels, Samara projects HERSELF (her DNA and what not) onto these tapes and her DNA is infected with small pox.  Once you watch the tape her DNA travels into your body (through nensha) and you die in 7 days from the small pox virus.  Hollywood has altered the plot some to make it more mysterious and scarier for audiences but I have heard rumors of a prequel which will be similar to the japanese prequel 'ring 0: Birthday'  and the movie will probably come together along this same plot line.  For more info go to http://ringworld.somrux.com/faq2.htm
Its a really great site and clears a lot of things up.

did anyone notice how samara fell in the well, which was only filled with a few feet of water, head first? and the well wasn't wide enough for her to tumble, so anyone who would have fallen from that height with that little stability headfirst would have died almost instantly. screwy, yeah? lol email me Shady_Saphire_Eyez@msn.com

I wondered that too... i did NOT expect rachel to survive when she fell down the well... but then again a million in 20 dollar bills would weigh like 300 lbs... so ask hollywood why they think it would fit in a little briefcase :P  or how you could fall down a well of 3 feet of water and live...

It may have something to do with me NOT seeing it at the movies, sometimes that tends to have a big effect on how the movie presents itself. The whole effect of the big screen and the surround sound must play a part in deeming this movie as scary.

I admit, the plot of the story is very interesting and clever and I can see how some would be afraid but to sit there and try to make sense of it all, kind of takes away from the ability to be totally rattled.

Why Aiden called her Rachael and not Mom.  I am from the U.S sometimes alot of people who have children at a younger age, don't want to be classified as a Mom or Mother.  Just like the grandmothers here do not like to be called Grandma.  With the kind of relationship they had (Aiden and Rachael) it seems appropriate and as she adamately requested the teacher to call her rachael and not Ms. whatever, she probably asked aiden to do the same but since we didn't see it, We have to assume that due to the relationship of the parent and child and the age of the young lady, it was a preference mutually agreed upon.

Everything (after watching it for the 2nd time) makes sense to me now so I won't go back over it.  A few things I am still confused about...

The severed fingers in the wooden box. Where did that come into play?

The magets?  I am assuming ate her insides while she was dying for 7 days.

The flies... I'm curious why there were so many?  Were they in the well?

What was the centipede all about?  All of these things are symbolisms but I don't understand where they came into play.

Why did the locals on Moesko Island say that she messed with Nature?  Was it because she had the child even though she wasn't supposed to?  They said that samara's real mom died of complications... what was the big deal of them adopting her?

In order for you to not be killed after you watch the tape, you must show someone else and then make a copy.  Can u tell the other people that you show the tape how to redeem themselves?

Why at the end... was the tape on the employee pick shelf.  How did it get there?  Never mind... I think that when rachel went to rent the the pokemon videos and the guy asked her if she was trying to buy time she left it there and thats why noah couldn't find it when he went to her apt for it.

Ok thats it, if anyone has answers... Holla!

Is it just me or are we missing a few ODD points :

1.)The dead faces that seem in "shock" of katie and noah closely resemble that of a horse.

2.)WHY, in the videotape, was Anna dressed in OLD clothing ?! There is something about that. There seems to be a hundred year gap.

Okay, my friend and I ride horses. And her parents always insist that we were the same kind of clothes Anna Morgan wears.  Everybody who is into equestrian riding has to wear that type of clothing.

Here are some questions answered:

Why does he call her Rachel? Becuase its trying to emphasize the fact that they are not close.  At the end she realises this when she says "some kids do drawings... I need to go."

People ask how does she kill you?  She (after 7 days) inflicts upon you what happened to her, only in a second.  This is why the bodies are immediately waterlogged.

Why does Aiden talk to Samara?  Aiden feels alone, just like Samara did, and therefore Samara talks to him.  He is also slightly clairvoiyant, we see this when the teacher says that the drawings of Katie are a Week old.

How was Samara born?  In the burnt images Samara gives us, we see horses in a womb, a girl in a horse... etc.  We can only assume, (it says live birth on the birth cert.) that Samara was either born of a horse, or of Anna via horse drugs.  The idea of Samara being born as the equivalent of Christ does not pan out, Samara wants to inflict her pain upon the world, not send everyone to hell becuase she is evil.  She simply wants to be heard.

In Ringu, Samara frightens them to death, Verbinski must have wanted to make it more gory, i find this to be a mistake.

One of the most common questions among smarter people... no offense to people who have not asked this... is why Aiden asks "Why did you help her? dont you know she doesnt sleep?" or something to that effect.  The need to not sleep is inhuman, and therefore... we have another hint as to whether or not Samara was really completely human, which backs up the whole theory of Samara born of horse drugs or in a horses womb.

The whole 7 days thing is not a random number... any simpleton can figure that one out.  They make it more than poignent when the guys asks how long can you survive down there and Rachel replies "7 days"

Those sites are all fake... moeskoisland.com and such.  However I am glad that someone enjoyed the movie enough to make them.

Earlier on somebody commented on how Noah's girlfriend is Samara... no.  Her name is Beth.  As for the whole shes coming down from the apartment... nix on that also.  The elevator DOES go both ways.  However people still think its the same person.  In RING 2 (Japanese), it has Beth as a prominent Character.  In RINGU, Beth (different name), screws up an equasion on a math board.  Noah (again different name) fixes it THEN Samara (Sadako) pops out of the TV.

As for nosebleeds... they occur when you find something out about the story.

You see flies when you are about to find something out...  right before they found the motherload of information... (Samara's actual body) they found a motherload of flies.

Samara made the tape... you guessed it... by thinking it up.

Hair is drawn over the faces of all the people in the magazines because they have become infatuated by their horror.

As for the half empety water pitcher thing... get over it its not significant.  They were simply showing that nothing was in the water... if someone can back it up however that it IS significant... please do so.

Notice how there is a black ring between Noah and Aidan when they encounter on the way to school?  Freaky.

You might consider The Ring (and moreso for Ringu) to be anti television movies.  Sadako is the name of a girl who died in the bombings of Hiroshima... nuclear bombings.  Bombings = radiation = television?

Also... If you don't want her to get you... simply hang your tv from the roof as demonstrated when Becca stops in the mental hospital allowing herslef to be unshielded from the TV... I think she had the same idea as I do.  Samara pops out to get you but falls out and breaks her neck.

Happy landings!

The ring is my favorite movie! But of course I have a few questions:
1)Did Samara come out of the well for everybody?
2)Did Samara have a friend?
3)Where is the well cover when she crawls out of the well?
4)Since the majority of the tape is her memories, do you think she actualy managed to get out of the well and go to either a friend or her mother, only to be thrown back into the well?
5)What exactly happens on that everly so exciting seventh day?
6)What do you think The Ring 2 is going to be about?
And finally... which did you like better Ringu or The Ring?

The well cover doesn't feature in the "video" when people watch it, but I do believe that she comes out of the well at the end to represent the fact that she has been "released"

It's quite possible that the kids at the start die simply by the fact that Samara has the ability to scare people to death regardless of where they are, or else they'd all just hide from their TV's!

why is it so important samara never sleeps?oviously it has to do with whatever she is.that's why aidan says,"Don't you understand Rachel. She never sleeps."Does this mean shes restless because shes not meant to be?Richard Morgan said"My wife wasn't meant to have a child."Does what samara realy is lie in the fact that she can't sleep. If not,why is it important?

My boyfriend just got me the DVD wednesday and I just watched the "dont watch this" part. Well, I left the room when Noah pulls the canoe up to the dock. I know what's in there, but I don't want to see it! LoL
I noticed some things.
1)When you watch the original movie, it looks like Anna just stuffed the bag over Samara's head and threw her in the well. But when you watch the outtakes, you see Anna holding the bag closed as she gropes for a rock. Finding nothing, she pulls a loosish brick up from the well wall and conks Samara over the head with it. They should have left that part in so people could see how she does a somewhat better job of knocking her out, but then when Anna closed the well it wouldn't be a ring, there would be a hole there. LoL.
2)I'm guessing the well pictured at the end of the tape wasn't the real well. I know that makes no sense but to get a better picture look at the well featured on the cover of the movie. It's so tiny you could barely fit a dipper inside it let alone a person especially compared to the scene when Rachel falls into the well.
3)They left out a couple of scenes from the movie that they should have kept in to make more sense like the papers that say live birth and 67 miscarriages, and especailly the parts where it shows a baby in a womb and coming out of the womb, if I hadn't seen that I never would have suspected she was born from a horse.
Now Questions
1)For those of you who have seen the "don't watch this" part, when it showed Rachel and Noah at the inn, were they really in the same place at the same time without knowing? I kinda missed that.
2)Did Samara commit suicide? Here's how I came up with that: a person could live without food for years. Assuming that she drank the water in the well it might have made her ill but not kill her, and if she stayed with her head out of the water she could have lived for years, since she never slept so she could only have drowned if she wanted to.
3)I just recently got a portable DVD player and I haven't got the battery in the remote yet so I haven't been able to watch the movie with subtitles, but at the part where she sings I know what the lyrics are but listen as I try all I ever hear is "here we go the world is spinning, when it stops it's just beginning." I don't here the rest. Weird.
Haha I've only watched the Ring on 3 mediums, the first time I watched it was the TV in my bedroom which is like hanging from the ceiling 8 feet up so if she came out she would have fallen and broke her neck. Then I downloaded it and watched it on my computer which the screen is like 18 inches by a foot I don't think she could fit out of it now I watch it on my portable DVD player which is like 7 inches wide she DEFINATELY couldn't come out of there so I think I'm safe LoL

When Mr. Morgan came down and saw Rachel watching the tape in his living room he said "she'll never whisper in my f---in ear again!"

if you go to the ring website, there's a dialogue that has a missing line from the tape:

SAMARA: But he doesn't know!
DOCTOR: Know what?
...
DOCTOR: Samara?
SAMARA: Everyone will suffer!!

When she whispers that, is that what Mr. Morgan means by "whispering in his ear?"

Just a thought.

 Horses   > reply

OK, here's a thought about Samara vs. the horses. Aiden says Samara doesn't like it in the barn; "the horses keep her up". Later, Rachel remembers what Aiden said, although she mistakenly repeats it out loud as "the horses keep her awake". Aiden didn't say "awake", & wouldn't have, as he knows that Samara never sleeps. The horses certainly sense her malevolence. Given where Samara is eventually kept, does the collective, relative "goodness" of the horses keep her "up", in her prison, until she's strong enough to drive them mad & free herself? Remember the doctor says that they had "hard years", "mean winters", "small hauls", "no fish", all long before the horses began drowning themselves? These seem to be the embryonic efforts of Samara testing her power. No one is yet suffering from "hallucinations" or "madness". The "island's cold is everyone's cold". Everyone (her parents not the least, especially since they know her origin) sense that she's somehow responsible, so she's kept high in the barn with her only means of egress easily taken away. Is she somehow able to draw upon the energy (radiation?) from the TV she has as her constant companion to learn the horrific skill that would become her "salvation", i.e escape?

Does Samara know of her fate (i.e betrayed by her mother)? She seems to be aware of her imminent demise while standing facing the well as Anna is coming up behind her. Do the horses need to be eliminated (making them mad through horrific imagery & drowning themselves ties in nicely with Samara's eventual physical resting place, yet unlike her human victims, before the fact) so that she can descend from the loft and fulfill her destiny, by "dying" only to be "reborn" as the eternal (she was certainly aging as a physical being) unsleeping evil presence in the world?

I know it's been suggested before, but it seems to make the most sense to me as a religious metaphor.

Antichrist anyone?

Well anywayz I was watcing it on slo-mo and my dvd player has really crappy slo-mo it only goes up to like 16x but when the floorboard falls and the tv starts to slide it's just staticy, and then it shows a flash of the tv coming at her and just for a second you can see something on the screen, it looks like a girl's figure but it's all black and shes surrounded with like black floating things I don't know but try it sometime tell me what ya think! I thought it was really cool LoL
