Hi there. I saw the flick last night, in a preview in Frankfurt, Germany. I'm not so much into scary movies, but this one is tempting me to go back and see it again, although it seriously disturbed me, beyond the usual scare.
I think Aidan calls his mother by her first name because he sees himself as peer to her. He can take care of himself and does take care of her (e.g. the dress). His eyes seriously unsettled me. I don't want to wake up with this kid staring at me. He reminded me of Damien. Maybe Samara speaks to him and show him images because he's so close to Katie, and Samara kowns of him. They're alike in their quietness, but I don't think either him nor Noah's gilrfriend (is her name really Samara too?) ARE Samara.
I'm sure Samara made the tape just like she the made the x-rays: she imagines them and then they just are. I think she kills because she can't help it, like she tells the therapist. I think the tape kills the ones who see it because they suffer Samaras terror out of nowhere. Her situation probably got worse and worse each day - these teens and Noah are hit by this doom just by watching a tape and they are faced by a seven-day death sentence, just like that. As people are, on the seventh day they're are prone to die. They slither towards the seventh day, receiving signs, like the nose bleed, like a horse sensing the presence of horror and going mad, like the hand mark on their arm out of a nightmare, like the images in their heads, that they cannot ignore. And after seven days of fear they're so immersed in that reality, her reality, that there is no boundary between the two anymore and Samara comes to them.
There's still tears welling up in my eyes when I ponder this movie, and I get shaky. It's beyond scare and it fascinates me.
I think it would not even have been necessary to show her face so clearly (though it was brief). With that face hung with hair, reflections from her eyes and a hint at her bloated decayed face (like her chin or mercilessly unexpressive blue and white lips) would have been just enough for me, but that's probably why I'm not a director.
Anyway, this is my kind of horror movie.
