Order me up a large portion of “Freedom Fries” because I finally have a reason to hate the goddamn French. Elephant, Gus Van Sant’s 80-minute Calvin Klein commercial about high school violence, won both the prestigious Palme d’Or and Best Director awards at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

Directors Ask MPAA to Repeal Screener Ban

Spike Jonze, Martin Scorsese, Sofia and Francis Ford Coppola and Robert Redford are among the 142 directors urging Jack Valenti of the MPAA to repeal the recent screener ban, which gives the 5,600 Academy Awards voters no choice but to catch most movies in theaters. This unfairly disadvantages independent films that usually have a limited showing.

Weekend Top Ten Box Office Films

Quentin Tarantino's bloody kung-fu flick killed the competition and opened as the weekend's top movie with an estimated $22.6 million making it the fourth-best October opener ever. The Coen's Intolerable Cruelty opened in 3rd with $13.1 million.

Burton's BIG FISH Trailer Now Online!

Tim Burton's (Edward Sissorhands, Beetlejuice) next big film, Big Fish due to be released January 23, 2004 has it's first official trailers up on it's site. Big Fish starring Albert Finney and Ewan McGregor is based on a novel by Daniel Wallace.

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Movie on the Way

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy has been greenlighted by Spyglass/Disney and will begin filming early next year in London. It's scheduled to be released in 2005.
