Topic: Film Review: Titan A.E.
By Azad on June 20, 2000 10:00 AM

Having seen quite a few American made animated movies, Titan A.E. is definitely one of the few that manages to stand on its own as a movie. By far, this feature manages to integrate 2D and 3D animation together (almost) seamlessly. Although not perfect yet, it is a great accomplishment in the animation arena. It takes a LOT of hard work to get it to look this good. The space ships and space scenes were pretty cool.

The story is pretty simple and straightforward: an alien race called the Drej feel the human race is a threat so they decide to destroy humankind. The only hope for the survival of the human race is a ship called the Titan. The trouble is, nobody knows where it's hidden. Like most scifi movies, the plot is predictable, which is just fine for popcorn-munching entertainment, although a few unexpected twists provide for a few "Hmmm, interesting" remarks. The characters had good enough depth for a movie of this type, although I thought that the dialogue could have been written better.

Conclusion: A wonderfully entertaining movie. It's an animated piece, so leave your sense and expectations of conventional film reality behind and simply appreciate the artistic animation work. I give it a 9/10.

Stand on its own? This movie was definitely a concept movie - "look what we can do!"; and it is unfortunate that 2/3 through the movie they fired their writing staff and replaced them with the two guys living in the dumpster outside. If you're going to rip off Star Wars, at least do it well...
