By Jack on February 10, 2000 11:12 AM
(SB)-Of five original screenplay nominations announced by the Writers Guild of America for its annual awards, three represented films that were written by their director. They included Magnolia by Paul Thomas Anderson, The Sixth Sense by M. Night Shyamalan and Three Kings by David O. Russell. The others: American Beauty by Alan Ball and Being John Malkovich by Charlie Kaufman. In the adapted screenplay category, writer-directors also dominated the list. They included: The Talented Mr. Ripley, by Anthony Minghella, The Insider, by Michael Mann and Eric Roth, and Election by Tom Perotta. the others: The Cider House Rules by John Irving and October Sky by Lewis Colick. Conspicuous by their absence were Frank Darabont's The Green Mile and Norman Jewison's The Hurricane. Each film has been caught up in controversy about the accuracy of their accounts. Winners of the DGA awards are scheduled to be announced during ceremonies on March 5.
