Quote of the day:
"There is a large element of me in every role I do. Actors who say they can dive inside a character are either schizophrenic or lying." -- Bruce Campbell |

Almodovar's Newest Wins Seven Spanish Oscars
By Sushuma on February 1, 2000 10:10 AM
BARCELONA, Spain -- Pedro Almodovar's latest film, All About My Mother, won seven Goyas at the Spanish Film Academy Awards. The director walked off with two prizes for himself -- best film and best director -- on Saturday. Mother was nominated 14 times. Its first honor went to Esther Garcia for best production supervision. Cecilia Roth won best lead actress for her role as a mother who tries to locate her son's father after the boy is killed in an accident. Almodovar, who received only one other Goya -- for Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown in 1989 -- dedicated his award to his mother. She died shortly after the film was finished. "I read in the newspaper that I've never mentioned my mother" while collecting other film awards, he told the audience. "I did it deliberately -- I was waiting for this occasion." Mother is considered the frontrunner in the best non-English language film category at the Academy Awards, scheduled for March. It already has won the New York Film Critics' prize as well as a Golden Globe. It was named European film of the year in Berlin.
