Topic: Film Poland's Wajda to get honorary Academy Award

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif, Jan 20 (Reuters) - Polish director Andrzej Wajda, best known for his film chronicle of the Solidarity movement "Man of Iron," will receive an honorary award for lifetime achievement at the March Oscars, officials said on Thursday. Wajda, 72, who has never won an Oscar in his 44-film career, is to be honored by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences for his "artist's view of history, democracy and freedom, and who in so doing has himself become a symbol of courage and hope for millions of people in postwar Europe," Academy President Robert Rehme said. Rehme said Wajda was one of the most respected filmmakers of modern times and had brought the world's attention to European cinema. Read more.
