Canadians Try to Censor Another Movie
By Jack on December 23, 1999 11:02 AM
The Film Review Board of Ontario, Canada, the country's most populated province, has rejected an appeal by the makers of the critically acclaimed film Sunshine to change its rating from R (no one under 18 permitted) to AA (requires an adult to accompany anyone under 14). The board cited "coarse language and racial slurs."sexual violence" and "simulated sexual activity." The film, which earlier this month received more nominations for Genie awards (Canada's equivalent of the Oscars), than any other film, was defended by its producer, Robert Lantos, who told the censorship board that he had taken his own 15-year-old daughter and several of her friends to see it. Today's Toronto Star says that Lantos wrote in a letter to the censorship board that none of the teenagers found the film offensive. "On the contrary, they felt it was an important educational experience, something teenagers rarely experience when they go to the movies." But of course they would!
