WTC Deleted From Spidey
By Azad on September 13, 2001 11:13 PM
(SCI FI Wire)A Sony spokesperson told SCI FI Wire that filmmakers will use computer technology to remove any images of the World Trade Center from its upcoming Spider-Man movie, which was shot partly in New York earlier this year. Sony has also recalled its teaser trailer for the film--which featured a sequence in which the titular hero traps a helicopter full of thieves in a massive web strung between the two towers--and posters featuring the towers. The studio was responding to the terrorist attack that destroyed the towers on Sept. 11.
The trailer and poster "both feature images of the World Trade Center in them, and the sequence that is included in the trailer is not part of the movie, so we felt that it was appropriate ... to be sensitive to the circumstances of this past week's tragedy," the spokesperson said in an interview.
The spokesperson added that the changes won't affect the timetable to complete the film, which is currently in post-production, or alter its current release date of May 3, 2002. A new trailer has already been produced and new posters will be coming out as well, though the spokesperson did not say when. The movie, directed by Sam Raimi and starring Tobey Maguire, is based on the Marvel Comics series of the same name.

Because the movie will release after the cleanup, it sounds appropriate to update the scene background, but I can't help feel a sence of morbid discomfort at the thought of that kind of alteration. As if they are tearing them down again. The towers should remain in the film as a tribute to the greatness they symbolized.
Not to post a spoiler....however, the first appearance of Spidey takes place during an attack at a New York World Fair, lots of New Yorkers running for cover as chunks of buildings fall onto the streets. Luckly Spiderman is there to save everyone.
Where were you when we needed you Spiderman, WHERE WERE YOU THEN!

I really think they should have kept the shot in as sort of a tribute to those buildings as well.
Hell, in that shot the WTC towers are used (as a prop by Spidey) to help catch a criminal. I don't see how it would be "insensitive" to leave them in there. But, that's my opinion.

The irony is uncanny. In the preview, it seemed the two towers were used to catch flying terrorists. I agree, they should have left it in.

The sad part is: any new movie will be shot missing the WTC from the skyline unless stock footage is used. In times like these, we need Superman to circle the globe & turn back time. Too bad there are no real superheroes with super powers.

By deleting all references to the WTC in movies we are forgetting all of the Heroic people who gave there lives to save people when these buildings were under attack.Leave the buildings standing just as the heroes and others whose lives were lost but NEVER forgotten.

I think keeping the towers in the film is a better idea. It would be more of a salute to them and the people who worked there than to just act like they never existed. I think people will become nostaligic but not depressed by seeing them, and certainly New Yorkers will hunger for the images of these ever-present landmarks.

After some thought, I don't think taking the towers out is a bad idea. Leaving them in would have been fine, but I think it would be hard for a lot of people (especially those who lost someone) to see them in the movie and not re-live the scene of them collapsing again.

I see no problem with leaving the towers in the movie. I for one would feel buoyed that terroism has not succeeded in striping the U.S. of A. of even our sense of entertainment.
If Sony is concerned perhaps a disclaimer at the beginning of the movie to this effect would be suitable and servicable to anyone who thinks these sick fvcks can impede on America and it's values.
We should respect our past for it is what it is. We are now moving ahead and the memories that are now paid for in blood should never be erased. Digitally or otherwise.

I don't think they should have deleted the wtc from the movie. It would probably be the last movie to feature scenes of the wtc in it, and that shoult be dedicated to the people that died, and it should be a tribute to them.

I may be wrong, but it seems to me removing the towers from the movie is completely the wrong way to go. It almost seems to condone the tragedy.
Really though, if Sony really wants to keep the people of New York happy, ask them! Post a poll, utilize test screenings, ask people how they feel. For all you know, you may insult more New Yorkers by removing those majestic symbols from the movie.

I think we should keep the twin towers in the movie, as a symbol, that nothing gets America down, and we will rebuild.

I agree the WTC should remain in the movie. Maybe they can add some type of Memorial at the end. We don't want to pretend it never happened!

By erasing the twin towers, they are doing anything but pretending it never happened. If it never happened, there would be no need to erase them.

It was a crap trailer anyway. If the trailer is any indication of the film perhaps they should just pull it as well and save themselves anymore embarassment.

i wonder how many of you that want to keep the towers in the movie live in New York? Until each of you have come up here and have seen what is happening with your own eyes...i feel that you should refrain from being so critical that they were removed. I do not know how I or anyone up here will feel about seeing them in a film a year from now, knowing that they are now a huge tomb and the stench (wich started this week) will probably still be in the air.

I think they should have left the twin towers in the trailers and such. Because that's a sign that you've moved on, gotten passed the fact that the towers are gone, and gotten on with your life. It would be nice to see them standing, for a while, instead of just a huge pile of rubble anyway. So they should have left them in there.

How about digitally adding a memorial site to the WTC, bigger towers, a vision of how the site may look a couple of years in the future. Respect to the people that are no longer with us, a positive message going forward, go Spider Go! Would be too much work and too controversial for Sony tho, not sure what the reaction would be...just a thought tho.

it is too bad that they deleted the scenes from the movie, but what I think is worse. They never included the deleted scenes on the DVD. at least on the dvd they have the choice to see them or not. very disapointing. I would like to see all of the deleted scenes and beleive that they should make them available to the public.
