Topic: Film Dykstra Spins Out Spidey FX
By Azad on August 21, 2001 12:11 PM

At the Wizard World convention in Chicago, John Dykstra, visual effects supervisor for Sam Raimi's upcoming Spider-Man movie, told the convention audience that matching a computer generated Spidey with actors and stuntmen in costume proved to be quite a challenge, according to a report from the Comics2Film web site. "The toughest thing about this show is that we're going to make a character who is indistinguishable from a live character," Dykstra told fans at the Wizard World convention in Chicago.

Dykstra added, "The fact that we don't have a face to work with in order to create the emotional content for the character means that we have to use body language. So for everyone, for the actors who are involved with the scene, and the director of course, and the animators who have to subsequently animate the computer-generated version of this character, all have to have the same mindset. It's a tough thing to do. And to keep that personality of body motion throughout the picture is going to be the hardest thing."

There are about 400 effects shots for the movie, all being supervised by Dykstra. As for the Green Goblin, Dykstra said, "The costume exists, in reality, as a costume. He's complete. He's three-dimensional. He's there. At this point, he can walk around without any [computer] enhancements. When it comes to flying his glider, inasmuch as that technology doesn't really exist, when he flies, generally speaking, he's either a stuntman on a rig of some kind that supports the glider, or a CGI character."

And of course, with any talk about Spidey, Dykstra talks about Spidey's powers. "He has all the capabilities that he will have in the comics, and hopefully capabilities that would fall to a character who has the capabilities that you would know about," he said. "In other words, there's no limitation to what the character's going to be able to do with his webs. He'll sling them and use them in, hopefully, all the fashions you've seen before and maybe some innovative new ones."

Its gonna look fake and this movie is going to SUUUUUUUUCK.

Spiderman is too much of a whiner, too introspective, for todays audience. Everyone wants WOLVERINE.

Now I admit I will be more than happy to eat my hat on this one. I like comic book adaptations, I like to compare other peoples artistic vision with my own childhood imaginings of these characters.

Yes, it probably will suck. But only for the people who have been growing up with spider-man. We are so used to using our imiginations to picture together our stories, we aren't going to like the movie no matter how well they do it, or how good it comes out. We will always have our own mindset and our own expectations. Thats why comic adaptations are never as good as we want them to be. Just hope for the best and watch it die like the rest.

In truth geeky fanboys want Wolverine (not a slam, hell- I'M a geeky fanboy!). But the truth is geeky fanboys don't bring in $300 million in ticket sales. So bring on the ICONS like Spidey and Superman and Batman.

Bah, you don't know what you're talking about, Freddy-boy.  Its easier to think with your head out of your ass; you should try that.  Yeah, you're right, though.  No bpdy gives a sh*t about Spider-Man.  That's why the Spidey books have been some of the top-selling comics in Marvel's enourmous line (Next to the X-boks, of course; I'm not denying everyone loves Wolvie).  And you can't possibly be so ignorant to think everyone shares your thoughts on Spidey being "whiney and too introspective."  Peter Parker's personal conflict and introspectivness (I doubt this is really a word) is a major factor in what appeals to most people.  Because, get this, Fred: people can relate to the character.  Its why they enjoy him so much, and its why this movie is going to make a killing in the box office.  I know its hard for you to believe that anyone can relate to a character Spidey, since you seem to only be able to relate to the cigar-chomping, short-tempered type who think they're the best and whom refuse to tell people their real age, but its the truth.  As for the effects being fake, there's an SFX test of Spidey crawling a wall on the movie's website.  Check it out, and then tell me what's fake about it (No, seriously.  There's no doubt in my mind you'll think it's fake for some obscure reason, and I'd like you to "inform" me on what it is.)

I don't understand how people seem to be able to predict if a movie's gonna suck when so far there's only been a teaser trailer and talk of production.  Did you talk to Ms. Cleo or some sh*t?  Cause really, I would love to know how to do it, so I don't have to waste money on sh*t like "The Phantom Menace" (which everyone predicted was going to be amazing, as I remember it.)

That dosnt mean its gonna suck like hell, Fred Hater! I mean common what else could they use instead of computer effects? what ?have 200 stuntmen break there neck on top of buildings? in spidey stories he has to swing and do his flips! i think this is gonna be an awsome movie and will screw all u ppl who think it will suck!  AND why do u ppl like wolverine so so much?? i have to admit i collect his comic books too and i think hes cool too but not the coolest, I only think hes cool cuz hes Canadian ! like me!

I have been waiting for a long time, for a spiderman movie !  I am 29, grew up with spidey, watched the show on cbs in the 70's.  This movie should equal or surpass what they have done with Batman.  I am excited.  Surely it won't suck like x-men did.

No you don't, Freddy.  You live to talk crap about movies you haven't seen and insult Tiny (though I must admit, Tiny is a bigot and I am not a fan of his; if you're gonna dedicate your free time to bashing someone...)

Fred Hater,

I know what your thinking. You think just because I am a 39 year old virgin, who reads comic books, and considers my parents garage to be my independent home, that I must be a loser. Well...maybe I am. I consider Peter Parker, Logan, Banner, and Krypto to be my friends. Mary Jane Watson is my girlfriend, at least for a few minutes each day. My salary is spent on comics, play station 2 games, and the salad subs at Subway, cause I dig Italion food. Your what me and my special friends would call a "tool" Fred Hater. You've probably never heard it before, thats cause I invented it, along with "putz". Anyone who does not think that Night Crawler is the coolest dude on the planet is nothing but a geek!!!!

So many movies get such hype anymore, I've learned not to expect too much from any of them, but I can't help looking forward and being hopeful whenever I hear they're making movies like Batman, X-Men and now Spiderman!!! So please don't burst my bubble. I have high expectation for the FX in todays movies. Of course, I'd probably be satisfied if the movie was done by Pixar!

What I'd really like to see is a Daredevil movie written by Frank Miller or Kevin Smith. That would be a great comic book movie. Or If I can't get that, a Dr.Strange or Iron Man movie would be pretty cool. As far as DC heroes go I'd like to see a Creeper or Spectre movie. Other characters I'd like to see include the Authority (don't think the FX are up to it yet) or a Planetary movie (same) made some time in the future. Just my 2 cents.
