Exorcist IV: A Prequel
By Azad on August 6, 2001 12:42 PM
(SciFi Wire) John Frankenheimer will direct the next installment in the Exorcist franchise, an as-yet-untitled prequel from Morgan Creek Productions, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Production will begin in the spring in the United States, England and Africa, the trade paper reported.
(The prequel will trace the story of Father Merrin back to his first encounter with the devil during missionary work in post-World War II Africa. William Wisher initially adapted the prequel for the big screen from William Peter Blatty's original The Exorcist novel. Best-selling author Caleb Carr rewrote the script, which then caught the interest of Frankenheimer, the trade paper reported.
(Warner Bros. will distribute the film domestically, while the studio and Morgan Creek International will distribute overseas. The first installment, released in 1973, has spawned two sequels--1977's Exorcist II: The Heretic and 1990's Exorcist III, the trade paper reported. Last year, Warner Brothers reissued the first film with recovered footage that was cut from the original release.

Does anyone care? Frankenheimer and Carr and excellent talent, but why waste it on this boring ass sh*t. You won't top the first movie--- and the other 2 sequels prove that. Maybe they should consider making an adaption to Carr's "The Alienist." That's the only "-ist" that's gonna turn my head now.

I agree with you, I would rather see them make an adaptation of 'The Alienist'. I remember about 3 years ago there was talk of adapting that novel, but obviously it never came around. However when I read that book the only actor I could visualize playing the Doctor, was the late Raul Julia. He would have been perfect for it.

For someone to give an opinion, and spell out the word "ass" but not finish the spelling on the word "sh*t"; I don't think you really know what "Alienist" you are talking about. but then again, everyone has an opinion and they are like the a--holes they come from!!!

WEll I have been waiting for a horror movie for quite sometime. I get tired of Scream and I stil know........ type movies. Even Hellraiser's last straight to video caught my attention because it was just something different. The original cannot be topped but with Frankenheimer and Carr they may still make a damn good movie.

It was obvious that part
2 was trash, but 3 had a
twist w/ the return of
Father Damian possesed by a serial killer. I guess you just have to like that kind of stuff.
I'm looking forward to
Part 4.

All the Exorcist movies had their own appeal... The Heretic was a very good movie, although very dated, it scared me just as much. William Peter Blatty is a great author, and the [entire] Exorcist series will always be at the core of my nightmares and yours.

The first cannot be topped for a movie of that caliper for that time...however...bear in mind that part3 was much closer to reality....evil is evil..and that film (3) had the feel..of #1
the inner understanding of evils nature...the fear is there...the evil is real....REPENT!

The first is a classic, the second is an attempt to capture the evil of the first, but ends up being too religious and ignores its characters, the 3rd is one of the best and original sequels I've ever seen, and it was meant for Blatty to do this movie for he knows what the evil from the first is all about. He has taken the material to a next level; if the prequel can add to that, I'll be looking forward to it.
