Topic: Film New Indy IV Details?
By Azad on July 5, 2001 12:55 PM

(SCI FI Wire) New details are emerging about the development of a fourth Indiana Jones film, the New York Post's Page Six column reported. Paramount Pictures confirmed to the paper that it's "given the green light to look at scripts." But the column added that at least three scripts have been written, with rumors that the story concerns Indy's search for the lost city of Atlantis or his quest to find a long-lost brother. Both Lucas and Spielberg reportedly want writing control.

"Paramount had meetings last week about the movie," an anonymous source told the Post. "They want the original credits--George Lucas producing, Steven Spielberg directing and Harrison Ford to star. ... Harrison wants at least $25 million, plus some of the back end, and George and Steven have said they will work for a lesser fee than usual, but want a big portion of the movie's proceeds. The entire movie is going to cost them $150 million, and Paramount can't figure out how it's going to make any money with all three of the big names demanding money off the back end."

The Paramount spokesman told the Post, "There is no budget yet, because there is no script. Harrison Ford will most likely get $25 million because that is what he is getting for some of his other movies." The Post added that Sean Connery has recently expressed his interest in returning once again as Indy's father.

Although I consider "Raiders of the Lost Ark" to be one of the great films of all time, the sequels to it were all, how shall we say, disappointing...I would be hard pressed to envision a script, or scenario, in which this film subject could be viable again.

You are on crack. "Temple of Doom" sucked, but "The Last Crusade"? You either live in a hole, or were dropped as a child. A new Indy flick would be great, even if it involves a geriatric Indy looking for Atlantis.

I still do not think it will actually happen though... :(

Lucas lost the hard edge he established in "Raiders". "Temple of Doom" tried too hard and the Connery/Ford pairing in "Crusade" turned the film into a kids comedy. If Indy IV happens, I hope it returns to the more menacing themes of the original. But let's face it, a 50 year old Indy won't be fighting Nazis - he'll be running around in the 1950s probably bumping into a young Elvis and maybe meeting the characters from "American Graffiti". Wierd.

Harrison Ford could sit on the crapper half the movie and it would still be better than those "Young Indiana Jones" filcks.

I read that M. Night Shamalan is writing a treatment. If that is true, prospects look good as long as Ford dyes his hair and keeps in shape. Oh, and Lucas stays out of the writing process! Speilberg can do no wrong on this one. I enjoyed all 3 thus far.

i think it would be a pretty good movie.the only indy movie i didn't like was "radiers of the lost ark" i found his leading lady to be very annoying. "temple of doom" was pretty cool, the kid was funny. and i totally loved "the last crusade" that was the best one yet. so i think they could pull it off.

Raiders will always be the best, and still after 20 years one of the best films of all time.  Temple of Doom was a letdown, because that film was caught in the melee of diseased films of the 82 - 85 years where Lucas, Spielberg and Co. thought that anything with annoying little children in the mix would be cute.  What a mistake!  E.T., Jedi, Temple of Doom, Goonies.. all suffered this fate.  I never saw E.T. (I refused to go see it when it came out because it sounded stupid, never saw goonies.. for the obvious reasons...)  I thought that era was over until Phantom Menace came out.  I had hoped that we had all grown up by this point.  Obviously not.  If they can stay away from the inane children formula of that era, a fourth IJ might have a chance.  Temple of Doom overall was not a bad picture, it just didnt need the children premise... Last Crusade did redeem the franchise but did not capture the intensity or emotion of Raiders..  I wish them luck.  And forget the makeup on Ford, keep him just the way he is, an older (50 - 60ish) Indiana Jones would be rather interesting end marker on this series....

Even after Lucas screwed the last Star Wars up, I have faith that the fellas are gonna redeem themselves with a truly great "Indiana" movie. As long as they avoid Hollywood Hoopla, WORST dialog ever, and lousy computer generated BS. It should all wind up OK. Have faith fellow DTheatre folks, there's a chance it could be great.

As far as they're comments regarding pay, it makes me sick. All these multi millionaires b*tchin about pay. I'd do any job they needed on that film, from acting to Gripping for free, and that's the truth.

As a patriot I obviously feel strongly as for our right to free speech, and our own opinion. But for god sakes Shemp, how could you not like "Raiders of the Lost Ark". It's almost perfect...I doubt I'll see a better picture in my life time.

I think that Indy iv could be good.  However, I also think the film is doomed with all involved being so greedy.

I do agree with no computer generated bs, no kids, and no make up on Harrison Ford to make him look younger.  I don't think it should be about a search for Atlantis.  The timing just isn't right with Disney's.  And searching for a "long lost" brother sound like they're grasping for straws.

I also don't think the script should be written by anyone else.  Keep it original or come up with a different title.

P.S.  I liked goonies.

If it has a plot or not I think it would be a mistake to let a good idea like this go to waste and I promise if they can make this happen for me I will go five times to the movies to make it happen for them.
