Topic: Film Holy Lots of News Batman!
By Azad on April 30, 2001 12:23 PM

First off, the director of the new Batman film has confirmed that George Clooney is to reprise his role as the caped crusader himself, according to a news report from UK's Guardian Web Site. And of course, this is despite the fact the the actor's original turn as Batman in Batman and Robin was a complete box office flop. And according to rumors, Clooney could be reprising the role under duress. An industry insider claimed that the actor had been contracted to do two Batman films, but was unhappy about the role due to poor box office turnout of the previously mentioned Batman movie. But perhaps a $15 million pay packet and the chance to work with *gasp* Aronofsky may have changed the actor's mind about things.

Contrary to earlier news sources, it has been confirmed that Darren Aronofsky is, after all, directing the next Batman movie. Darren Aronofsky, who previously directed the controversial Pi and the award-winning Requiem For A Dream, has said that the former ER star would return to the role in Batman: Year One. He told reporters: "George Clooney is going to be back as Batman in the movie. There are no major casting changes".

Batman: Year One is one of two Batman films currently in production. Whereas the Aronofsky project will be a prequel to the previous Batman films, the animated Batman Beyond will see a retired Bruce Wayne handing the Caped Crusader mantle over to a younger man.

Expect both films in theatres sometime in 2002.

God really does love me.  **sniff** I'm so happy...  Arnofsky is so perfect for Year One, and (as long as they don't use the rubber suits with nipples) I also think George Clooney could pull of a pretty good Early-Batman.

Looks like I can go back to church!

Lets just keep our fingers crossed and pray that this film will be the best BATMAN. The talent is there.

*sigh* This sort of pains me.
I haven't been thrilled with the Batman's with the exception of Burton's. I do suppose that if anyone can make this one good, it would be Aronofsky. Well, it's most certainly the only way I could be persuaded to actually pay good money to see it.
I wish him luck.

Of all the Batman movie's I think the last one with George Clooney as the Bat was the best one.  It's a given that the movies could be better scripted.  I hope this next one will be the best.  maybe they could throw in a little of the Matrix style.

You actually thought that "Batman & Robin" was the best Batman flick!?!?
Ack! BE GONE, DEVIL SPEW!
The series has just gone downhill since Burton left (sniff).
Casting Arnold as Mr. Freeze was just plain blasphemy! Christopher Lloyd would have been a far superior choice for Freeze. If you look at the Mr. Freeze from "Batman: the Animated Series" and compare that with Lloyd's Judge Doom from "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" you'll understand what I mean. Mr. Freeze is the kind of guy that's supposed to creep you out and get under your skin (Lloyd excells at that), not some musclebound Austrian in a doofy over-the-top RoboCop wannabe suit.
I think any fan of the comic, Burton's FAR SUPERIOR Bat-films, and the Animated Series will agree with me.
And as for Clooney and *shuddderrrrrr* Kilmer, they just stunk. They're both too much on the pretty boy side of the Hollywood casting pool. Keaton had more of an average Joe kind of look going for him which worked nicely to juxtapose Bruce Wayne's public face with his rubber-clad  "Let's make Jack Nicholoson fall from the tallest building in town" crime-fighting alter-ego. I say bring Keaton back for another go at the Bat. Sure, he's an old fart now, but if they can make Sean Connery look like he has a full head of hair (for reference, please watch "The Rock," "Entrapment," and "Finding Forrester") they can make Keaton look twenty years younger EASILY.
Come on guys, back me up here!

From RUBIAN (Netherlands)

I agree with the commend you made about the differents between the comics and the "Batman" box office movies. But the ting that buggs me the most is the fact that the first 2 Burtons were good and they had the darkness as in the comics (or like The Crow, Sleepy Hollow, Edward Scissorhands), but didn't have the ruffness like the story lines from the Knightfall (Jean Paul as Azrael as Batman)comic with the rise, overtake, and fall of Bane..and the return of Batman after an broken back.

The rest of the Batman movies......please give me a break...A director as Joël Schumacher in charge, never agian?!!

That was kids stuff, it had notting to do with Batman....its was TO MUCH about getting boxoffice money.

Look at a movie like Spawn......

I have to agree with pumpkin boy, the bat series has definatly gone downhill since Schumacher took over and turned it into some over the top live-action cartoon.  The problem with the Batman series is the same problem that all films adapted from mainstream comics have.  The people making them dumb down the material for the kiddies and the general public. As long test audiences say they're willing to lay down ten bucks to see it; it doesn't matter if the film remotely resembles the  original subject matter.
Batman is supposed to be dark, griity, and unapproachable. That is why he is one of the coolest characters in comics.  Bringing in Afronsky is a start down the right road, but lets not forget this is Batman: Year One; so drop Clooney.
This film needs someone who can one very traumatized YOUNG man, also lets not forget that the character if darn near psychotic.  The series needs fewer gadgets, fx, and extravagent costumes; and more fighting (emotional and physical), grittiness and just plain loyalty to the characters.
As for the Wayne/Batman character, if the studios feel they need a name with draw, fine.  Does anybody remember Kalifornia, 12 Monkeys perhaps; maybe Brad Pitt could pull it off.

Clooney as Batman sucks. It didn't work in Batman & Robin and it doesn't matter what the new script is like, he just isn't a believable caped cusader. I've written the film off already. I'll wait for the animated feature.

I wish they had gone for some new blood.  For a YEAR ONE script, they need a young batman (like David Borenez;  Anyone agree?) Clooney, while I don't hold him responsible for the vomitous car wreck that Batman and Robin was, doesn't make a good Batman, young or otherwise (put on a few pounds of muscles and maybe he could play him in a "Dark Knight Returns" movie)  Someone tell these mutton headed studio exec to fix this.

I did not like the first 2 Batman films.  Maybe it was all the hype before the releases.  But with all that, when the time came to see the films I was VERY disapointed with the whole this.  No dialog, assanine special effects.  At least Clooney talked in this one.  There was a little bit of a plot.  Granted Arnold as Mr. Freeze was not a good choice.  and the costumes could have been better.  Starting the whole project over with unknowns might be a boost.  Of course I wouldn't want to pay more than once for any of these films so far.

im thinking the whole idea is like trying to beat a dead horse...  if it hasn't worked till now mabye it wont.. at what point does this become a kin to rocky and halloween... 52 sequals later and a whole lot of lame jokes... Batman works on paper, im not sure if they can make it go to the big screen, mabye...

I agree with Xcaliber, stick a new guy in there. All the Bat Man movies up until now have really sucked. They need to tone down all the big budget BS, and stick to a good detectivelot with cool HTH combat scenes and a good villian. I think Daniel Day Lewis would make a great Wayne and Bat Man.

How about Cuba Gooding Jr.? It's about time for a black batman, Denzel Washington or Ving Rhames would work also. Spike Lee would be the obvious choice for director. Come to think of it I bet RuPaul could put an interesting perspective on the caped crusader. It may give a keener insight to Waynes unusual fondness for Alfred and the Boy Wonder.

People please anything after BATMAN the movie was horrible directed by Burton or not poor plot development cheesy BAT-WEAPONS and Overall Piss poor casting, as well as OVER CASTING (more than 2 villians per movie)has made the series a travesty. Hell at least Superman made at least 2 decent films before they flushed the other 3 down the toilet. Batman Year One  has a great story line. Some advice. STICK TO IT dont think that you can add a few KAPOWS and BAMS to spice it up. If you do your going to have another Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 on your hands and Vanilla Ice asking to do a comeback song for the soundtrack.

I could not stand to sit through Batman and Robin and didn't care for Forever much either. The reason I've liked Batman since I was a kid was the darkness of it all and Burton came closest to giving me what I loved. I was always more interested in the psyche of the characters than the actions.

How bout me??  I should be Batman!!  *grinz*
i'm an unknown 29 yr old actor.  The only thing i think i lack is height (i'm 5'7") and that can be *fixed*.
here's a headshot, what do you think?
it takes more to being Batman than a "look"
i've been a Batman FANATIC since i was 3 and i would sooner die some horrible unimaginable death than portray the character poorly.  Year One should be an interesting Batman to portray - he shouldn't be as "experienced" at fighting crime, as well as more ruthless/reckless, given that he's still adjusting to having what is, in essense, two distinct personalities...
anyhoo....give me your opinions on me portraying Batman??

Yours,
Eochai

Why is Darren disgracing himself by doing a batman movie.
Everyone knows it's going to suck and not even Afronosky will be able to save it.
Damm he's dirtied  himself, the man was meant to make and do great things not bloody BATMAN.
