Harry Potter Trailer Hits the Net
By Acheron on March 1, 2001 12:04 PM
(Empire) The new Harry Potter trailer goes online today. In what could be the most downloaded movie trailer of all time, Potter is sure to please, and could conceivably be downloaded more than The Lord Of The Rings trailer was one year ago. LOTR got 1.7 million downloads on its first day.
According to Empire Online, "Our first impressions are that Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is going to rock. The launch of the official site two weeks ago seemed to suggest that Christopher Columbus had chosen a muted, gothic palette to paint the magical world of Hogwarts rather than his usual day-glo take on movies. The trailer merely serves to confirm this.
What's particularly good about this trailer is that we get to see so much more than what could be expected from the first trailer. There's plenty of great scenes from the movie; the Hogwarts Express speeding through the countryside, banquets in the Great Hall, good clear pictures of all the main characters and examples of some of the special effects. You'll also get your first taste of John Williams' fantastic score."
For those of you dying to catch the first glimpse of it, you can download it here.

I'm afraid that I must disagree with you. The REAL name of the book (as named by the author, and found throughout the literate English speaking world is Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.
You will only find the book titled as ...the Sorcerer's Stone in the United States. I hate to tell you this, but if you have been reading the American published version of the series you have been 'jipped' as you are reading a version where upon the text has been watered down immensely.
Unfortunately, this series is not the only example where American publishers feel it neccessary to bastardize text to Americanise the vocabulary and even entire sentence structure in an effort to make the book more readable to what some consider a less literate population.
Now, before you go thinking that I am insulting you, please realize that it is not me, rather the publishers whom have taken the position.
I myself find it totally reprehensible that a corporation has taken it upon itself to deem that an entire population is incapable of reading, much less grasping, proper english. Doesn't say much for them that they think that their own Americans cannot extrapolate for themselves the meaning of the text which they read. I agree, it's quite the insult!
So, do yourself a favour and go out and get the original version!

So does the movie title reflect the English or Americanized version? Will they change the name for American release?

Alas, it is a Warner Brother's production and titled the ...the Sorcerer's Stone.
So too must we endure the rather cheezy artistic renduring from the American 'Scholastic' books for all the figures and memorabilia turned out en masse. Though, I must say, given the above, I am midly impressed by the trailer...ain't Robbie Coltrane just the perfect Haggrid, eh?

Harry potter is fat and got his scar when he stupidly cut his head with knife. Dudleys smart; he doesn't starve himself to death, and doesnt have parents who get themselves killed by smart sorcerers. Dumblidoor is a door, and hes just a nuisance cause noone can find his key.
Take heed of my wise words.

I do not understand why you people are arguing over the title of this book, as the title of the book is the least important part. It's what's inside that matters. However, I must agree with you for the most part. The text should have been in tact, kept the same, word for word, for us poor, unfortunate Americans who are supposedly such blundering idiots. I admit that some of us are unfortunately blundering idiots, but still, as one of many avid Harry Potter fans, I would have dearly appreciated the original version. I think it is horrible that editors can alter a writer's work before its publishing. Does anyone agree with me or am I just nuts?

I think that you are wrong about the title. The title is everything. When I go into a book store and look at the books the first thing I look at is the title. If the title looks interesting then i will take the time to read a little about the book. You can't tell me that the title doesn't effect how you look at a book. Sure the inside off the book is important but would you look at that book if the title was boring and made no since. The title can speak for itself. If the title makes a real statment then people will read the book. Thats what it comes down to.

I am exceedingly sick and tired of people using the stereotypical "Ignorant American" as the reason for the changes in the Harry Potter book.
For your information there are quite a few differences betwen "British" English and "American" English. I happen to have copies of both "The Philosopher's Stone" and "The Sorceror's Stone."
Imagine my surprise and confusion on reading "The Philosopher's Stone" that Aunt Petunia tried to make Harry wear a little girl's dress. No wonder he rebelled. But then later I read that Mrs. Weasley made them for her boys every year as Christmas gfts and they liked them just fine. Ron only objected to his "jumper" because the color was one he didn't like. I had no idea, until several internet conversations later, that a jumper, which, in America, is a dress for little girls, happens to be the term for a sweater in the UK.
It also seems that the word "philosopher" has more of a magical meaning in the UK. In America the book title would have been the equivalent of "Harry Potter and The Someone Who Studies The Meaning of Life Stone" which doesn't have quite the same ring to it.
There are a few other differences like these in the books and I'm quite sure as the books are translated into other languaged there are even more. But because you supposedly understand English, you're picking on the American version.
Please try to be a bit more open minded. Everyone in the US we don't believe in the Americanization of everything. Actually it happens a bit more than we like but if you're judging our nation as a whole by Hollywood's standards then you've really got a lot to learn.

Not meaning to be a smart arse or anything (well maybe a bit, especially as you're defending "Americanisation"). The title refers not to philosophy as a concept but to the legend of the Philospher's Stone which dates back to the days of the Knights of the Templars. It should therefore be recognised as such on both sides of the Atlantic..............so there!

Well, that was a learning experience for you, wasn't it? ;-)
When reading a book by Louis de Bernieres (for example, any of his Latin trilogy) I don't expect the publishers to substitute any of the Spanish / South American cultural references for English ones just so I'd understand them better. And neither should you.
