Quote of the day:
"There is a large element of me in every role I do. Actors who say they can dive inside a character are either schizophrenic or lying." -- Bruce Campbell |

Battlefield Earth Gets Raspberried
By Acheron on February 13, 2001 12:54 PM
The 2000 Golden Raspberry Awards are on their way, and Travolta's Battlefield Earth topped all nominees with 8 nominations including Worst Picture.
The Raspberry Awards, aka "The Razzies" are given each year (usually right before the Oscars) to what Hollywood considers to be some of the most God awful films released. Battlefield Earth took the cake.
John Travolta was unanimously nominated for Worst Actor. His wife, Kelly Preston, was nominated for worst actress, and co-stars Barry Pepper and Forest Whitaker were nominated for worst supporting actor.
All told, the lighthearted nominations could put Battlefield in prestigious company: The film only needs seven "wins" to tie with Showgirls as the all-time Razzie champ.
"Ninety-three percent of all ballots that came in picked it for worst picture, which is a record," says John Wilson, head of the Golden Raspberry Award Foundation. "But I have to say, as wretched as Battlefield Earth is, with the right audience, it's a real howl."
Along with Travolta's film, Blair Witch 2: Book Of Shadows picked up 5 nominations, and Adam Sandler's Little Nicky picked up a nomination for worst film. Madonna also picked one up in the film The Next Best Thing. Those will compete against The Flintstones in Viva Las Vegas for worst film.
The Razzies are handed out one day before "that other" awards show, the Oscars. The handmade, gold-spray-painted raspberry trophies (estimated street value: $4.27) will be handed out March 24.
Here's a list of nominees:
- Worst Picture: Battlefield Earth, Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2, The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas, Little Nicky, The Next Best Thing.
- Worst Actor: Leonardo DiCaprio (The Beach), Adam Sandler (Little Nicky), Sylvester Stallone (Get Carter), Arnold Schwarzenegger (The 6th Day), John Travolta (Battlefield Earth and Lucky Numbers)
- Worst Actress: Kim Basinger (Bless the Child), Melanie Griffith (Cecil B. Demented), Madonna (The Next Best Thing), Bette Midler (Isn't She Grating), Demi Moore (Passion of Mind)
- Worst Screen Couple: Any two actors (Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2), Richard Gere and Winona Ryder (Autumn in New York), Madonna and either Rupert Everett or Benjamin Bratt (The Next Best Thing), Arnold Schwarzenegger and Arnold Schwarzenegger (as Adam Gibson and his clone in The 6th Day), John Travolta and anyone sharing the screen with him (Battlefield Earth)
- Worst Supporting Actor: Stephen Baldwin (The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas), Barry Pepper (Battlefield Earth), Keanu Reeves (The Watcher), Arnold Schwarzenegger (The 6th Day), Forest Whitaker (Battlefield Earth)
- Worst Supporting Actress: Patricia Arquette (Little Nicky), Joan Collins (The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas), Thandie Newton (Mission: Impossible 2), Kelly Preston (Battlefield Earth), Rene Russo (The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle)
- Worst Remake or Sequel: Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2, Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas, The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas, Get Carter, Mission: Impossible 2
- Worst Director: Joe Berlinger (Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2), Steven Brill (Little Nicky), Roger Christian (Battlefield Earth), Brian DePalma (Mission to Mars), John Schlesinger (The Next Best Thing)

Actually, my brother said he enjoyed it. Probably because he's deaf or something....hopefully.

It was the best book I ever read. Cramming the epic of the year 3000 into a 2 hour movie was tough. I have to see it now. Mr. Nacho

NO! Please! Save yourself the horror,... and whatever you do, for THE LOVE OF GOD dont see this movie. EVER! really...
Besides what kind of books are you reading man? I think you should read some Orson Scott Card or Robert Anton Wilson if your in the mood for some nice and jacked sci-fi craziness, and go rent Eraserhead for some minor corrective tweaking for your cranium..
Thats all.

I have to agree with you. This is one of the best book ever. Even with it's length it kept you interested. HOWEVER, the movie is another story all together. Don't waste your time, just pick up another good book. Try the Mission Earth series for some good sci-fi satire.
