Topic: Film Friends star going for Bond?
By Azad on December 28, 2000 12:40 PM

Believe it or not, Matthew Perry (Friends) is rumored to be yet another actor who is under consideration to replace Pierce Brosnan as James Bond. Well, at least according to a report by gossip columnist Janet Charlton, in turn reported by the IMDB Web site. Bond moviemakers Eon Productions denied any discussions had started about a replacement for Brosnan, who is expected to retire as 007 after his next Bond film.

And among other actors in the Bond selection pool, Ralph Fiennes, Rupert Everett, Ioan Gruffudd and singer Robbie Williams have all been rumored to take over the role of 007.

Oh please. Instead of, "Bond, James Bond." It will be, "How YOU doing?"

God save us all.

funny joke,
but it's actually Joey (Matt LeBlanc) on Friends who says that, not Chandler (Matthew Perry).
Either way...what are they thinking?!?!

Yeah, It would be more like: "I am so, like, James Bond" if Matthew Perry were to greet some one.

Joey and Chandler at the bus stop. One baby wearing ducks, the other wearing clowns. They decide they need to flip for it. After they flip they decide to assign heads and tails.
Joey: Heads should be the ducks because ducks have heads.
Chandler: What kind of scary-ass clowns went to your circus?

God save us all. True, the Bond series has been run into the ground, but this would be like signing on George Clooney for Batman. He's not even British!!! I like Perry well enough, but Bond is not something he needs to take a stab at.

I agree! they need to pick someone who's British, or at least European. Even if it means picking someone who's not famous to us, just as long as to pull it off (the look & personality), Hey It worked for Australian Actor Hugh Jackman as Wolverine didn't it?

Maybe they are going for a funny James Bond. A clumsy slapstick James Bond comedy starring Matthew Perry. Wouldn't THAT be odd...

That's Bond. James Bond.

I would much rather see Matthew Perry in a spoof of spy movies instead of the Bond role. He could really make it funny! I think Ralph Fiennes is a much better choice to play Bond.

 Rupert Everett   > reply

...would be the best pick. And he'd add a new dimension to the role. Whatever they do, they'll run the series into the ground by picking either Perry or someone too, too British and too, too serious. Bond needs humor, when they cast Dalton, it was nearly fatal.

Not him! Although he is an extremely talented actor, he just doesn't have the right stuff for Bond. Bond must be serious but pithy. The actor who portrays him must be able to create a character with charm, humour and strength.

From what Rupert Everett has done, he can deliver charm and humour. But can he deliver the strength and stodgieness that Bond needs to show at times. I am not sure.........

Very well said everyone. I think perhaps that they should go with a much younger Bond and try for a new approach. Instead of going forward with the stories, they should go back to the beginning when the character was first starting as an agent. It might be interesting to see what they come up with.

I think they should offer it to Russell Crowe, although I'd be surprised if he's available.

Interesting.

i would much rather see him in other films though. Playing Bond seems to be a dead end for most actor's careers.

Adrian Paul should be the next Bond - there is no better choice.

I am a big fan of the Highlander tv series. However, if they choose Adrian Paul for the next Bond film, I would not go to the theatre to see it. :-/

Timothy Dalton should be the next Bond. I don't care if he's too old now. He was the best Bond by far in the two films he was in. Even better than Connery. No other Bond brought a depth and meaning to the character like Dalton. :P

Dalton Sucked! He should stick with Fran Drescher. Personally I think Pierce Brosnan was arguably the best bond ever, possibly even as good as Connery. They should pursue keeping him instead of looking for someone else.

I think that the best Bond ever is Brosnan and I think that they should just stick with him. Cause if Perry is 007 IT WILL SUCK!!!!!!

You're a freakin' idiot! Timothy Dalton was almost as bad as George lazenby (something like that!). He was awful! Pierce Brosnan is the epitome of James Bond, English, suave, sexy and cocky at the same time. Stick with Brosnan, screw everyone else.

Who cares about yet another embarassing, second rate Bond film?

I figure any actor stupid enough to take a job like that is destined to be selling insurance within the year anyway.

And Regis Philbin is Ernst Stavro Blofeld? The recent Bond movies (or should I call them BMW commercials) have been so lousy plot-wise (M flies to Azerbajan and gets locked in broom closet?) that it doesn't matter if Perry plays Bond or not.

PLOT!?!?!?! Who watches Bond films for plot?

RE: Friends star going for Bond?   > reply

I think it's time we had a pudgy faced, cadaver-like actor playing the role! If he can match his performance in whatever that movie was called that he was in I know I'll continue not seeing Bond films. (Didn't they lose a lot of viability somewhere in the 80s? In other words they've sucked for years now.)

They Tried that with Austin Powers.

i think they should choose Robbie Williams...he's unknown as an actor..and he may be talented (MAY be), plus he looks and sounds the part...i like the comment about making a prequel...i think this would work with Williams.

I may be dwelling in the past, but I think it would be interesting so see a previous bond (ahem, Connery) playing in the role of a more sophisticated, older bond.  Plus, Connery has proven his still-agile abilities with Entrapment. This series is hurting.  It cant hurt to experiment with what worked before.

they could bring back connery, the only problem is they would have to dig him up! the liscence to kill should be handed back Timothy Dalton. he's still young and viable to play the part and unlike Brosman he can pull it off.

If you were any Bond enthusiast you would clearly know that Brosnan has the look to play the Bond role, more so that Dalton, and please God save the Queen if Mathew Perry is to mock this movie icon

I think Dalton should reprise the role of Bond in at least one more film. If not for MGM then for another studio. I would gladly pay $1000 a ticket to see Dalton as 007 once again. As for the official series with Brosnan, the sooner it gets canned permanently the better.
