Topic: Film Review: What Women Want
By SKillBot on December 21, 2000 12:12 AM

This isn't something I would usually go out to see. But The Grinch was sold out, and the only thing showing that I would see with my mom was this movie. (I couldn't convince her to wait two hours for the next showing of Proof of Life)

It started out with the story of a kid who grew up with Las Vegas showgirls, and turns into a womanizing advertising master. So far, so good. Then his company takes a turn for the worse, having to hire a female creative director in order to reach the growing consumer demographic of young women. The horror!

There's not much plot to be ruined, by the way. This movie rides an interesting concept - as he's drunkenly trying on a box of feminine products, he gets shocked by his hair dryer and magically gets the ability to hear what women think. From there, it gets a little stupid, but turns out to be an interesting story of a guy using his powers to enhance his career in its new direction... and to get Marisa Tomei in bed.

Then he finds out what an awful guy he is, and uses his ability to save his relationship with his daughter, make a bunch of people happy, save some dolphins from scraggy pirates, and fall madly in love with helen hunt's character at the end. (if you couldn't see that happening from the movie poster, you needn't waste your brain power to complain)

I was entertained, but this movie isn't for everyone. No one gets naked, and there's a little bit of smot poking, which makes up for the gratuitous nike and apple ad placement. You should certainly see it if you get trapped into seeing a chick flick and you have some choice in the matter.

Although it was a sub-par movie, I'd have to comment that this is the MOST sub-par movie review I have ever read on DTheatre... come on! You make absolutely NO MENTION of any character's names for reference to people who have not seen the movie... and it is just horrendous journalism... Get a real reviewer to write a review next time... I mean, what the f-ck?? Did a 12 year old write this? Wait, that would be insulting to a 12 year old. Conclusion: I give this review a -3/10

You obviously haven't been reading dtheatre long enough if you think this is the worst review yet. (I've written some before) And do you really think people go to a movie like this to enjoy the writing enough to care about the characters' names? Of the ten people in that theatre, I didn't hear one screaming "Man, I can't wait until the book comes out!"

Shit no! People go to this movie expecting to see MEL GIBSON doing mel things and HELEN HUNT doing helen things. The character names are strictly superficial to make people forget how cheesy the entertainment industry can be. And for that reason, I would feel dirty using the character names and acknowledging this movie as anything other than what it is.

Oscar-winning Marisa Tomei's character didn't even have a name. Suck on that!

Thanks for the feedback, though. I love hearing any and all interesting comments.

Patrick Ewing could write a better review.

Like the one he wrote for "The Colour Purple"

we've had a little bit of a Patrick Ewing and sexual perversions problem as of recently. That's what all the hoopla's over.

Well, if you are at least going to WRITE a fucking review, try to do a good job, otherwise it's a waste of my time reading it, and a waste of your time writing it.

Marisa Tomei's name is "Lola." Don't argue facts if you don't have them accurate.

Actually, he did write a good review...he did atleast place the most important thing inside it anyways, 1) Mel Gibson
2) Marisa Tomei (all i gotta say about this point is DAMN) 3) Helen hunt. Most people dont really care what a review says, even bad reviews aslong as it has a big NAME actor, are you really gonna go to a movie that has a bunch of no name actors in it?
I wouldnt, not unless i got paid

Has anyone ever actually SEEN Julia Roberts and Eric Roberts standing side by side?. Has anyone ever HEARD of someone seeing them together?

What if they are the SAME person? One with long hair, one with short.

I can't believe I'm the only one who finds this disturbing.

I thought all of the Patrick Ewing stuff was going to be censored? Was that all just a hoax to get the honest readers to stay just a little longer? If they stay, I don't.

Working on it for the new DT, which will be launched soon as we get our clients' deadlines under control. There's a swear filter in place, as well as a comment editor. Soon, it will have something that detects patrick comments.

First of all, Marisa's character name was Lola. And I thought she did a great job, even it was only a bit part. Second, I thought this was a really funny script and was one movie that actually had a lot of interesting female characters, even if most of them were bit parts. Finally, yes, this review stunk, but that's just his opinion and this is just mine. So there.

I thought she had a name, but I couldn't remember hearing one, and the imdb drew a blank on that. I'd have to agree with you on everything except the quality of my review. I think it was 1337.

what really sickens me is the egotistical characteristic that people have that doesn't allow them to accept defeat humbly... I'm yet *another* reader who thinks that the review reeks more than cow dung. The least that the reviewer can do is to at least admit to it.. sheesh... journalists who admit to mistakes are more respected.. and those that don't are just lame pieces of sh-t. Just giving my two cents here.. might be a good lesson for you Mr. Reviewer.

If my mad reviewing style sickens you, then you're way too serious about it. Read it for what it's worth - my perspective on certain aspects of it that many reviewers will leave out. Prepare for the onslaught of rhetorical questioning:

Was this review accurate? Not really. Unfortunately for this movie, there were no scraggy pirates.
Was it a waste of time to read? Depends, I think I've read a lot less useful reviews.
Was it offensive? I'm not a big fan of chick flicks because so many of them are just lame, I actually enjoyed this movie. Did I answer my last question at all?

This is my opinion on the movie, and my reviews tend to avoid the more traditional points of how one measures cinematic quality. I hereby don't claim to be a good reviewer, and admit that I get a cheap thrill over creating petty squabbles over a comment system on a site I helped develop :) I appreciate the feedback though, and I tried to be a bit more serious about the review I just wrote.

Is there some reason for the image from Lethal Weapon 4 at the top of the review? Danny Glover ain't anywhere in What Women Want, IIRC...

I enjoyed the film and yes, it is a chick flick. So what!

Mel is good. I loved watching him dance even if he is no Fred Astaire:). Torme is great in this film. A different charater for her in some respects. And Helen Hunt, well, she is the flavor of the month.

The movie is worth the price of admission during the discount hour. A good date movie if you want the impression your lady.
