As of other news, the spokeswoman for Sony Pictures has confirmed that Kirsten Dunst has signed on to play Mary Jane Watson, which was news that was first reported by the Coming Attractions Web site. Sony spokeswoman Jamie Geller said that the studio would formally announce Dunst's casting soon.

Apparently, Dunst bested Mena Suvari, who was rumored to have screen-tested for the star role. Kate Hudson (Almost Famous) was also rumored to be contending for the coveted role of Peter Parker's girlfriend. Dunst is no stranger to genre work, having appeared in Interview with the Vampire, Jumanji and Small Soldiers.
