Wasn't the original movie called Willie Wonka and the chocolate factory? Also, Depp looks like Marilyn Manson in that poster.

Actually you are correct.  But the book was called Charlie &, The Chocolate Factory,.. so maybe they're sticking closer to the book, and/or gearing up for the book's sequel, Charlie and the Glass Elevator.

Read the book(s)-  the first movie made was wonderful, I loved it for it's own value- but in terms of the book it really was not relevant at all.  The novels are actually incredibly dark- it seems that this new film will be more closely following Dahl's original intentions from the book.

The Star Wars thread died. It's getting about 80 vistors per minute and our shitty code is choking on the 500 some queries that are preformed on the database per vistor.

You've got it the wrong way round, there was nothing dark at all about Dahl's original story and part of the reason he was unpleased with how the film turned out was because they'd made it too dark (Like with the whole psychedelic boat tunnel and Wonka's creepy chanting etc...)

 RE: CATCF   > reply
Posted by A random shemp (No Email) on November 9, 2004 4:58 AM

They actually asked Manson first but he refused.

 RE: blahblah   > reply
Posted by A random shemp (No Email) on November 9, 2004 5:00 AM

Yeah, except that Wonka trusted humanity as far as he could throw it, and that he wanted only a child cause he distrusted adults, and a child could easily be molded into the person he wanted that child to be. Nothing wrong with that of course.

But Dark Horizons did.

When someone is exclusive to another site you dont take there images on post it on another.

Thats stealling the image and taking traffic away from the site that deserves it.

Instead you write a paragraph on it and give a link to the article at dark horizons that has the image.

Traffic by storing the image on dtheatre's servers and not DH's.

Most people wont follow the link because the image is right there infront of them.

the Gene Wilder Version was not liked by Roald Dahl partuularly as it took away from the darkness of his book to a certain extent.  the original apparently supposed to called Charlie and the chocolate factory but due to the release/production of Willy Wonka sweets at the time they decided to rename it and have a tie in. Dont forget people that this is not the first Roald Dahl story to have the Burton magic touch - he also did James and the Giant Peach....

 RE: CATCF   > reply
Posted by A random shemp (No Email) on November 16, 2004 8:49 PM

The Movie was "Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory"
but the book was "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory"
Also instead of Marilyn Manson I think he looks like Malcom MacDowell in "A Clockwork Orange"

RE: Charlie Vs Wonka   > reply

Correction: Burton did not "do" "James and the Giant Peach." He was a producer of the film, with Denise Di Novi, but Henry Selick (who also co-produced) directed that film. It's not a Tim Burton film.

 RE: CATCF   > reply
Posted by A random shemp (No Email) on November 19, 2004 4:50 AM

Marilyn Manson can't act, why does everyone think he should be in the film? Why not just cast The Rock while your at it?

 Manson   > reply
Posted by A random shemp (No Email) on November 19, 2004 1:11 PM

Marilyn Manson is not in this movie.  That was simply a rumor... from pre production.  He was being considered for Wonka, which is obviously Johnny Depp (hooray).  I'm glad they are going for the darker, orginal concept that Dahl had in his book (and yes they were much darker).  If Depp doesnt make this very different from Wilder's performance, there is no way this film is going to succeed.

 RE: Manson   > reply
Posted by A random shemp (No Email) on November 20, 2004 9:23 AM

I think you all must have read a different version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory because there was nothing 'dark' or 'gothic' about it at all.

Let me ask you something... Did you ever do English Lit?

Yes, it is dark. If I could be assed I'd go looking for quotes... :)

But yes, Dahl = Darker-than-you-think, you just have to read into it.

First of all, learn how to spell. Your grammar and illiteracy disgust me and it makes you look like an idiot.
Johnny Depp is a very well respected actor. He's been in countless movies, and he's done a great job in all of them, what are you talking about? And Marilyn Manson as an actor? HAH! You slay me, seriously. I don't know what Tim Burton was thinking even ASKING him. Johnny Depp will do an excellent job. In fact, about two years ago, before i even KNEW we was going to play Willa Wonka, i was thinking 'who would be be a great part for the movie if they were to remake it?', and Johnny Depp was the only person who came to mind. You're opinions, although poorly written, are welcome. But not when you're acting like a complete ignoramus.

 RE: blahblah   > reply
Posted by A random shemp (No Email) on December 10, 2004 6:12 PM

The book wasn't dark exactly it was fatalistic.  The author believed that adults were destroying civilization and were raising kids who would be just as bad as them.
As for someone else to be Wonka I had been hoping for Christopher Walken to be Wonka originally.  I thought his talents as a triple threat actor would have been excelent he's a bit older than Wilder when he did the role but it keeps with "I want to retire" mentality.
Plus Walken can go from harmless and psychotic in about .65 seconds.

 RE: blahblah   > reply
Posted by A random shemp (No Email) on December 12, 2004 6:38 PM

I never though of Walken, what a great idea. He would make a great Wonka (although my love for Depp can never be surpassed by any actor), I'm very much looking forward to this film and I loved reading all the comments!

 RE: blahblah   > reply
Posted by A random shemp (No Email) on December 12, 2004 7:19 PM

"They" did not make the movie either "evil" or "dark". Let me put this in a nice way, it is a Tim Burton film(music by Danny Elfman!),and all of the movies he directs are rather "odd" by most people's opinions. AKA Nightmare Before Christmas, Big Fish, Edward Scissorhands,etc...see how all of his films are considered "weird" by some? That's just his influence on the films.

 RE: CATCF   > reply
Posted by A random shemp (No Email) on December 21, 2004 9:03 AM

yeah, the Original movie was called Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory But this isn't the original its a sequel and theres no better way to have a sequelthen to have it made after the book...Charlie and The Chocolate Factory.  Which was  released as a more childish book but it was most defintely interesting. If the movie came out with a such name like "The Return of Chocolate Factory" then people might get confused especiallly if it had nothing to do with the ending of the Original movie or the Book. And just because Johnny Depp looks a little portrayed as Marilyn Manson that does not mean he is.  There are rumors going around saying that Manson was asked to play in the movie but he turned them down also stated in a recent interview with him. This movie will be more than a big hit at the box offices, but who knows if it'll turn out to be a bummed out movie leaving you lost and confused as heck??

All of you that fail to read the prior comments, and repeat endlessly the same things over and over.  I feel (IMHO) that Tim Burton & Johnny Depp have been an outstanding combination in every endeavor they've collaborated on.  But they are also great when working with others (Pirates...Depp and Nightmare...Burton).  Now as for Marilynn Manson (spelling??) as an actor...I know of only one other film he has even been connected with at this point other then as a musician and that would have been "JawBreaker" with his then girlfriend Rose McGowan.. and the minimal role he played he did well and was not overly dark and scary, but quite professional.  So lay off the bashing of an artist you don't understand and except the fact that he MIGHT have made a descent Willy for the movie but chose not to do it...Maybe he didn't feel like getting type-cast as a dark actor so that in the future...he might have a future.

Thanx for your time,

just my two cents:
i believe the movie (and more importantly, the book)is aimed at society as a whole.  it presents to children a world where everything they want is handed to them as long as they're not evil brats, and adults respect them.  to adults it's a huge reality check that we're raising our children wrong and destroying the world that they'll have to deal with eventually.  MM would have very well portrayed the darker side of WW, and i believe that he would have been entertaining as well.  have you ever seen the guy in an interview?  he's brilliant.  however, he might have freaked out the youngins, so johnny depp would be the better choice.  as for CW, he seems too extreme.  he's either harmless or creepy.  there's no undertones, no hints.  the reason JD resembles MM in the film is because he looks creepy, and manson looks creepy.  however, he's wearing a shirt, he has shorter hair, and he's not wearing false eyelashes.

Okay, Marilyn Mansen is not brilliant.  He thrives on shock value to get attention.  He thinks, "let's see how freakin' weird and different I can be so people will talk about me and how scary I am."  Then, he gets on an interview and speaks normally so that not-so-intelligent people out there will say, oh wow, isn't he just brilliant!  He's just expressing his "art"!  He's a genius!  Give me a big freakin break.  I think he dropped out of high school-- could be wrong on that, but I thought I heard that.  Anyway, now that I'm done with my rant, I would like to say that I am very much looking forward to this movie and I can't wait to see if Johnny Depp can pull this off.  Gene Wilder was amazing, and will be very hard to top.  Are they going to have the four bed-ridden grandparents in this one?

MM thinks differently, that doesn't make him stupid, and he wants his voice heard (just like you, dumbass!) and not many people would listen to his ideas if he wasn't the way he is.  he's brilliant even if you don't recognize it cuz your mind's too clouded with your own ideas to listen to someone else's.

okay, that doesn't even make any sense.  Are you saying I shouldn't have my own opinion? He's a marketing scam, and you're a sucker for buying into it.  And you didn't have one thing to say about WW.  You suck.

Are they really friends or is that a rumor?  Also, is MM really an antichrist. if so, how do you know and why did he choose to be that way?

Here some things I do know, there is a God and there is Satin. The Devil can be take any form he wishes and speak with as much elegance and intellect as anyone.  In Johnny's case, he has had a difficult childhood which has left an impression on him spirtitually.  Although he now understands the joys of life through his (wife) and children, the illusions of the dark sides of life are still familiar to him.  I can only hope that he has the strength to stay "closer to the light" as he was quoted as saying in an article.

I just stumbled in here when i searched "charlie and the chocolate factory" looking for some info on the new movie.  I think that the language that you guys are using in this forum is completely ridiculas.  I'm sure in the upcoming months as the premier of the movie gets closer, there will be many young children who accidently  end up in this forum as i did.  As a bunch of adults, you should be ashamed of yourselves.  And before you go putting me down as some older adult, i just wanted to let you know that i am 21.  Thanks!

yeah, i definitely agree with you there. also, i love how everyone acts like mason is the spawn of satan. he is actually quite intelligent, and while i don't think he would be able to fit the part for wonka in this movie, i most definitely don't think he deserves to be put down.

and by agree i meant i agree with the fact that no children are going to read this. even if they do, do you actually think that if they are surfing the web and can find this site that this is the first time they have ever viewed foul language? nope.

As to if Manson was asked to play Wanka, I find conflicting stories spread across the web.  However, the rumour isn't that off kilter, take a look at Manson's first albumn and its follow up.  His logo is very Wanka, he is even quoted as saying he wanted to come off as a more evil wanka.  So the Manson kids ran with it.  This either sparked a rumour, or led the production crew to actually consider it.  Could he have pulled it off?  We'll never know.  We can't discredit his acting ability, in fact we have nothing but evidence for it, he is more entertainer than musician, and is quite good at what he does, love him or hate him.  As for Depp, brilliant casting.  I think there are very very few actors I would even consider a proper fill in for Wonka, shy of genetically creating Wanka in a lab.  Dahls books were not "dark" persay, but in contrast to Wilder's performance, quite a bit darker.  Burton is just the man to bring a bit of oddity to a story that cries out for something beyond the norm.  Wonka always seemed more spooky than zaney to me anyway...  my 2 cents

Manson is a great at what he does, and that's singing. Although he's a very intelligent man, and he seems like he's very nice, I don't think his acting ability is anywhere near what Johnny Depp could do. Stop being a frigging idiot and just shut up already.
