Bootleg Movies Now Even Easier to Find Online
By Jack on May 30, 2000 11:09 AM
Full-length, first-run movies, including Gladiator, Road Trip and High Fidelity are currently available on the Internet to anyone willing to spend eight hours or more (on a 56k) to download them and view them on a tiny screen. The music industry has virtually united against the wildly popular song-swapping Net software company Napster. But in the past few weeks, other sites, such as Scour and iMesh, have created software similar to Napster's - and it finds not just music files, but photos and videos. The Motion Picture Association of America knows about these sites and they are not happy. Naturally Filmmakers/Producers are complaining. Should we expect another Napster type case? Read More...

Scour.net has been doing this for even longer than Napster. Back in my Freshman year, I used scour as my secondary resource for m3ps (the primary was my college campus' residential network). This was back in '96, long before Napster was released.

Here I go, replying to my own comment... I meant to add that they've always searched for any type of multimedia you wanted. Even wildcards like "all video" etc. Just because movie pirating has become more prevalent in the search engine doesn't mean it hasn't always done this.

People seem to have completely forgotten Usenet. Newsgroups have been carrying all forms of files for years and years and with a broadband connection such as Cable or ADSL you can D/L a file in the time it would take you to watch it. Usenet isn't offered by a single provider so there is no control...hehe. Full-screen is possible but unless its a DVD-rip good luck get anything like decent quality. I would watch a pirate copy of Battlefield Earth over spending $8-10 to sit through crap like that in a theatre.

Let's Face it, $8 to $10 is rediculous for a 2 hour film. I mean the majority of average movie go-ers do not even make that in an hour at work. Then you have to buy a drink and popcorn too! I mean it was like $6 just for a tub of popcorn that costs .50¢ to make. Who are they kidding? You bet I would download a movie before paying those kind of prices. God forbid we want to bring a guest!!! Double price at those rates equals half a weeks pay for minimum wagers! NO WAY is a movie worth a good chunk of my bill money. Yet in the interest of being a law abiding citizen I opted for the legal way to get more for less...Satelite hehe. I mean, I can wait for a good movie to come to me and pay WAY less money for as many movies as I see and if I have a girl over for a movie it is the same price and no ushers to kick us out if things get hot. Yeah, you'll see some people downloading films as a novelty, but really the major loss of $$ to the movie industry is there own high prices! Many will quit going to see movies at theatres and many more will follow with the next price jump!

but this service, UseNet, isn't free right? It's like 40 bucks a month, I can rent videos for that price. Is there somewhere free to get this?

I would have to agree with the other poster in here. I mean, who in their right mind wants to go to some dirty ass theater and spend on average $8-$10 bucks on some lame ass movie? I mean okay the movie prices are ridiculous, but c'mon what's up with the price for popcorn and soda and anything else from their greedy concession stands. I can go to Walmart, buy a 12 pack of "theater style" popcorn for about $2.50 and then download whatever movie I want and burn it, watch it on my dvd player, on my big screen all for the price of walmart popcorn and my 100pack of CDR's that i bought for 5 bucks. And 80% of the bootlegged movies out there are either Svcd's or DVD rips! I love it! Oh yeah so uh, why should I go to the theater again? haha The MPAA can kiss my ass...and so can the record industry. I havent purchased a single cd or went to the movies in years..I spend my money on things that are worth it, like the CDR's to burn the sh*t on! haha
