Oscar-Winner Gregory Peck Dies at 87
By Cmaster2 on June 12, 2003 12:44 PM
(ABC-AU) Veteran US film star Gregory Peck, famed for his roles in movies such as Roman Holiday has died at the age of 87, a spokesman said.
Peck became an icon of Hollywood with starring roles in more than 60 films, including Cape Fear and Spellbound, and won the best actor Oscar for 1962's To Kill a Mockingbird.
Publicist Monroe Friedman says Peck died peacefully overnight in his Los Angeles home with his French-born wife Veronique by his side.
"I have great sorrow in announcing the news that Greg passed overnight in his home, where he loved to be," he said.
Peck leaves his wife, four children and several grandchildren.
No funeral services have yet been planned.
The handsome actor, born Eldred Gregory Peck in the California city of La Jolla, near San Diego on April 5, 1916, became one of Tinseltown's last great leading men after shooting to stardom in the 1940s.
Nominated for five actors over his long career, Peck became synonymous with good-looking and morally courageous film heroes such as Atticus Finch, the right-minded southern lawyer in To Kill A Mockingbird.
