Review: Opera 4.0 (beta)
By SKillBot on March 29, 2000 2:58 AM
(ZD) Opera, the coolest lightweight browser ever, has its new beta out. If you've never used it before, you should give it a try. They've added a simple email client (egads! the whole thing won't fit on a floppy any more), and support for 128 bit ssl. It also allows you to accept, block, or disable cookies for individual sites (like lynx has been doing for a long time now). The new version also has excellent HTML,XML,javascript, and css support. The only catch is its $35 price tag. You can read the review here.

as good as it may be, why should I pay for a browser when there are so many out there, and pages are made for IE and Netscape/using their page builders?

It has several features that neither netscape nor IE has. It's _really_ fast. It's extremely efficient, which makes it great for less powerful computers. It also lets you view pages at various zoom levels, which is way cool. I think it's more stable than the other two (definately moreso than netscape), but I haven't tried the latest version yet. Personally, I use all three browsers for testing, but IE mostly for general use, since I look at a lot of flash stuff.

I have it on my laptop that has 8 megs of ram, and it's really not bad. I couldn't imagine using another browser on it.

NOOOOOOO! Oh well, Opera was fun while they remained true to the vision but with the addition of an email client and the consequent bloat to the point where it won't fit on a floppy anymore, I must pin my hopes on Mozilla; when complete, we should be able to compile custom versions of as pure and simple a Gecko-based browser as we want. In the meantime I use Lynx for 99% of my daily browsing, and if a website won't work with it I won't shop there. Once I got SSL compiled in for secure transactions, I haven't had too many problems :)

yeah, but Lynx sucks. The web is supposed to be a visual experience. All text sucks(though fast, it may be)
