15 Indie Films to go on the Block
By Jack on March 2, 2000 10:04 AM
(SB) - Marking the latest ploy in the curious mating ritual in which film buyers are brought together with independent film producers, an auction of 15 movies is set to take place in West Hollywood on Friday. Today's (Wednesday) Los Angeles Times said that the auction is the brainchild of Chicago entertainment attorney Hal Kessler, who formed Art in Motion, which is staging the Films4Auction event. (It will be carried on the Internet by Flixnetwork.com.) Buyers will receive actual ownership of the films, not a long-term lease, the traditional arrangement for indie producers, Kessler told the Times. "This way the distributor owns the movie and doesn't have to account or report to the producers. The fair market will dictate the price he pays. And then it's his."
