British Censors Hack At The Fight Club
By Jack on November 10, 1999 3:41 PM
Censors Tuesday ordered two cuts to be made in the controversial Brad Pitt film "Fight Club" before it could be released in Britain. The British Board of Film Classification ordered the cuts in the film, which had already sparked protests in the United States. The Hollywood Reporter called the movie about illegal bare-knuckle fighting "morally repulsive.", "There are two scenes in which the board judged that the violence was excessively sustained," said British Board Director Robin Duval. "In both scenes there was an indulgence in the excitement of beating a defenseless man's face into a pulp. The board required that cuts be made in each case," he added. The film has now been given the all-clear for release -- but it can only be viewed by movie-goers over the age of 18. Of course the "morally repulsive" content and the violence are what totaly sold it in the USA.

is the bar of soap on the cover. I knew it had to be more than just a bunch of people hitting each other and revolve around a cool story if it had something to do with a bar of soap. I was right :)

I don't know why they bothered cutting scenes. They should have done British society a favor and just banned the entire movie.
Some things should never have been made. Fight Club is one of them. Highlander II the Quickening was another.

I totally disagree with you. Fight Club was one of the most interesting movies I have seen all year. It is the only movie that I have seen recently that I was tempted to go see again.
This movie is not a vehicle for mindless violece. Not to say that this movie could not have been toned down and still make it's message heard. But the director (David Finch) was trying to make a statment about our culture. He was trying to say that some of us getting fed up with the "politically correct" crap we are fed at every available oportunity. Fight club was a vehicle for free-speech and thought. Some people just disagree with the method in which is was presented.
I have very little time, but when I have some, I'll buy the book that this movie was based on, I think that it was titled The Fight Club.
