Topic: News MOORE Won't Rename FAHRENHEIT 9/11
By Charley on June 21, 2004 11:30 PM

Ray Bradbury, author of Fahrenheit 451, is demanding that Michael Moore rename his upcoming movie, which is currently titled Fahrenheit 9/11.  Bradbury claims that Moore did not get his permission to spoof the title of his 1953 novel.

"He didn't ask my permission," said Bradbury, who is 83 years old and obviously in need of a nap.  Bradbury complained about the title over six months ago and was promised a personal call from Moore, but only recently heard from the portly filmmaker.

Bradbury's demands are clear: he would like the movie renamed and he would like for Moore to apologize for the liberties he has taken while trying to restore liberties to the citizens of this country.

As it stands, Moore and his people don't seem to be budging, despite not-too-subtle legal threats by Bradbury.  Bradbury claims he would rather avoid litigation and settle the dispute with a handshake instead.

Handshakes?  Apologies?  This sounds more like an episode of Leave it to Beaver than a high power Hollywood slugfest.

Perhaps if Bradbury changes the word "handshake" to "milkshake," his request will be granted.

Fahrenheit 9/11 is still scheduled to open this week, under that name, despite the up hill climb it has faced.

Bradbury Owns that Name   > reply

Well, Ray Bradbury is famous for that name style.  It is an obvious rip off of a copyrighted name and if Bradbury wasn't compensated or permission was not granted, Bradbury is right!  The arrogance of Moore is abhorrent.

That's just stupid, I mean, did the makers of Scary Movie have to ask permission for every movie reference they used?

Actually, I think they might have had to.

The Associated Press Briefing on Media law states that, "to determine whether a particular use [of copyrighted material] is fair, courts are required to evealuate [1]the purpose of the use; [2] the nature of the copyright work that is used; [3]the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the work as a whole; and [4] the effect of the use on the potential value of the copyright work."

Bradbury owns the name Fahrenheit 451, not the word "fahrenheit" or that word followed by a number.  Moore's intent is clearly to draw a comparison between the world of Bradbury's book, where information is destroyed to keep the people dumb, and our own world, where information is destroyed to keep the people dumb.  A comparison is not, technically speaking, a copyright infringement.  He has not stolen Bradbury's title if it is the recognition of that title which was the original point.

But with the right controlling the house, senate, executive branch, most lower courts, and the supreme court, Moore might be facing a real problem here.

It's one thing to use a name without the intent of infringing on anybody's ideas, but quite another when you knowingly do it. I already had little respect for Moore, but now I really don't like him. The only legitimate reason I can see for why he wouldn't change the name is to make more money?! Isn't money the motive he's accusing all these politicians of having??

he doesn't want to change the title because the word farenheit is a comparison of ray bradbury's work.  is has nothing to do with money.  if he changes the title, then his point is lost!

No.  He's accusing government officials of being corrupt, not of being bad because they want money.  Foo!

Someone (me) pointed out earlier that Moore is clearly not channeling Bradbury just because "fahrenheit" sounds cool.  He is referencing that story for a very specific reason.

Also, Moore is against corporate corruption, which stems from greed, but he has never come out against the pursuit of money.

Obligatory rebuttal (I'll do it for you):  "Stealing Bradbury's title is just as bad as corporate corruption!"

Answer:  See above.

I agree with Molar-Fag: The casting for the

FANTASTIC FOUR IS:

Ed Harris:  Mr. Stretcy crotch

Paul Walker: Jon Jon Storm

Russ Crowe: Thing

Milano, Alyssa: Invisible Bi-Hooker

Doom: Henry Winkler

Sometimes when I'm alone I like to fondle my pet monkey's testicles...there is nada wrong with that, is there?

Moore has the guts, the nerve, and what's more the guts, to fight corporate America, and it's not too bright Prez. If only there were more men like him, guys like Matt Damon and I would be a lot happier!

Bradbury should get over himself, and give Moore a break, it's not that big a deal!

I went to moorelies.com. Now there's a republican website if I've ever seen one. "Moore lies, trust us, buy a bumper sticker, and send a donation. Saw the movie. Loved it. It did not change my mind at all. I, like the majority off the United States did four years ago, will be voting against Bush. AGAIN!!!!

Titles can't be copy writed. I could write a book and name it Gone With The Wind if I wanted to.

why would people base the decision to see a movie or not on the title of it?
