Topic: Dtheatre.com Reader Rants: Time to take a stand
By Wishmstrfromhell on October 29, 2001 5:47 PM

NOTE: These are the opinions and writings of a Dtheatre.com reader. Dtheatre.com and it's staff may or may not share these opinions.

I was shocked to read into the article by the pmrc (parents music resource center) that they have guided our government into controlling what we wear, listen to, and say in public.  it's an outrage.  children are being suspended from school because they attended a rock concert. people are arrested and thrown in jail because of wearing a concert shirt.  Walmart refuses to sell anything with a parental advisory warning on it because they say it's detrimental to the health and well being of youth.  it's time we took a stand and did something about this attrocity.  I have some ideas of what we the people can do but am interested in others ideas on the subject.  time to put these freedoms back where it belongs--in the hands of the people

People are very panicing, there is no doubt about that, can you really blame them?

Since Ashcroft has put the country on high alert, pending another big attack, we should expect more of the same. One thing is for sure, there's no use crying about it. The "Seifeld" episode, where Susan dies from licking hundreds of wedding envelopes with slightly poison adhesive was just pulled from syndication. Should we:

A. Bytch & Whine about it.
B. Ban Seinfeld and the channel that it's on.

C. Turn off the tube and read a book.

Hold your head high, stay tough. Until terrorism is defeated, fear will run amok in the U.S. and other parts of the world, these petty fears we face are the least of some real serious ones we may have to face later.

Defeat terrorism?  Terrorism isn't a group of people you can just blast away.  How do you defeat an idea?

It's impossible to defeat terroism. If I wanted I could easily make a home-made bomb and blow some place up- If someone decides that they want to do it there's not much anyone can do until it's too late.

Terrorism is not an ideal, it's an act. The beliefs these particular terrorists have is an ideal. When terrorists are aware of the consequences of their actions, the chances of attacks diminish's greatley. However Random Shemp, we could do what you prefer and let these people kill every single one of us. We as Americans are proud people with dignity, pride, and resolve, we won't let these scum continue the acts of terrorism, sorry to disappoint you.

To the shmuck that keeps pointing out grammatical errors, get a life. Most of us type in a post when we get a free moment at work, there is no time to be careful. My work day is 16 hours, perhaps if I had it as easy and spoiled as you, I'd have more time.

To sum up this thread, if you are going to make a stand to those who are obviously panicing during these stressful times, then do it, but don't whine about it.

The first atrocity is your spelling of "atrocity", and the second is your lack of a reliable Caps Lock key. If you're going to change the world, you better get the language down before you do.

Yes, I do agree that the PMRC are a bunch of whining maggots who have nothing better to do than slap labels on material they find offensive.

Is there a Parental Advisory on the new Britney Spears CD?  Of course not. Is she a poor role model for young girls and may lead said young girls to a life of poor self-image?  You bet.

To the originator of this discussion, how many "B"s would you include in "double standard".

You rant about giving the power to the people then attack Walmart because they choose to sell only what they believe their customers want. If you want to buy a CD with a parental advisory, go buy it elsewhere. If you do not like "sanitized" songs, don't shop at Walmart. What gives you the right to dictate what Walmart does and does not sell? If the people you wish to empower wanted to buy CD's with parental advisories from Walmart, then they would complain en masse and Walmart would capitulate. The fact that Walmart still sells only clean or sanitized CD's shows you are off base.

Hello. I am an officer of the Amsterdam police and I think that all of you Americans should 'chill out'.  In my country we get many of the old people complaining about the young people. Only the other day we had a call come in from some old people complaining about a number of young people having an all-out gay orgie in the middle of the city park. Well of course this kind of behaviour can not be tolerated... from the old people. We encouraged them to try and express their homosexual side and embrace raw gay urges. I suggest you Americans do the same.

There's a beautiful invention out, now.  It's called "punctuation."  it is quite useful, actually, it helps keep you from looking like a total f*cking idiot.  Though I doubt it makes any garuntees...

I agree with the opinions given. However, since it was decided to post the letter as an article, couldn't someone applied a little judicious editing?

It is wonderful that this whole net thing has folks writing again but, damn, it's a shame when a good thought gets short shrift because the printed words look "childish" or like they were written by someone who has just started with english as a second language.

I'm certainly not excluding myself from the above. My posts tend to be rushed and loaded with typo's and grammer errors. I am really trying to put forth a concerted effort to improve.

OK, I'm done, flame away.

Sometimes grammar and spelling is incorrect in posts made by readers.  Get over it.  We've all made typo's.  Typing in a hurry can do unusual things to words. :)

Anyhow, As Americans, Wal-Mart has the right to sell only the music they choose.  It's also the consumer's right to shop elsewhere.  The Wal-Mart issue doesn't bother me as much as the others mentioned in this article.  I, for one, would like more information on someone being thrown in jail for wearing a concert T-shirt.  And being suspended from school for attending a rock concert?  WHAT!?  That's ludicrous.

On a side note, I agree with the posting about Britney Spears.  She's not a good role model for young girls.  And although she says it's a parents job to control what their children wear, who does she think buys her music?  Not anyone old enough to buy their own clothes.

I think the grammatically anal shemp has got to be one of the a$$holes that  insists upon a byzantine beuracracy that mires this country in red tape.

If we, as a nation, were not so worried about process we could actually accomplish something.

Wal-Mart is bull$hit, but they are cheap and convenient. So you need to go to your local record store to buy good albums; I think that is cool. I appreciate the fact that local businesses can stay viable because Walmart has its head up its own ass.

This group was founded in the mid 80's.
Was there a recent article---if so tell me where to find it.  I am a parent of a teen, and I allow him to listen to whatever music he likes.  He often takes my CD's to listen too.  And I agree Britney Spears is no role model at all!!  But, if my son wants to listen to her music it is OK with me!
You can e-mail me at Kukie3@aol.com

Kathy,

If your son does not like a super, super hot babe like Spears, then you got problems. I myself have never let my children watch any television except for the news, and the Robyn Bird Show. They can watch a movie a month, if they read 6 books a month.

What is the Robyn Bird Show?

I just said Britney was no role model, not that my son didn't like her.  Gee, he's almost 15, and likes all girls.

Actually he never went thru the I hate girls phase (I should of started to worry then) :-). He even had a girlfriend in pre-school (at age 4).

Also, my son doesn't watch much TV by his own choice-he would rather work on his computer!  But, his 1st TV crush was Melissa Joan Hart when she was on Nickelodeon.

Way to go Yankees!

Where is this article you are talking about? What children were suspended for going to a concert? Who were arrested for wearing a t-shirt? You need to tell us what you are talking about and where we can read this for ourselves? As far as Wal-Mart is concerned, don't they have the freedom to decide what they want to sell? You then say you have some ideas on the subject, but don't share them with us. Hey, if you want to rant or try to shock people, that’s fine by me. I just hope you at least write a rough draft next time before spouting off hot sports opinions.  You might be a bit more effective.

It's too bad some people don't have to earn their 'rights', they might appreciate them more! What is so wrong with having a parental watchdog? Their are so many kids out there whose parents don't care and don't pay attention to what they do. If we allow kids to do, say, wear and go anywhere they want, what kind of society will we have to look forward to? It seems like each generation allows their kids more freedom than they had, because they wanted it as a child, but that doesn't make a good kid. Kids don't appreciate ANYTHING they don't have to work for.
I have more to say but I'll be late for work if I don't stop now.
