Topic: Film Film director declares war on action movies!
By Power-trip on October 18, 2001 9:50 AM

Robert Altman, director of MASH, THE PLAYER and some of the episodes in the 1997 TV series, GUN, has his own opinion on the terrorist attacks in America on September 11, 2001.

Altman comments that Hollywood is to blame for the terrorist actions, saying that "only someone who has seen Hollywood movies could conceive an act like this."

Essentially, Altman called for Hollywood to put an end to all action films and return to more "traditional" movies.

Thanks to IMDB for the quote and Dark Horizons for the story tip.

i think he got that backwards, hollywood isn't responsible for terrorism...
terrorism has fueled hollywood for years and years, and probably for many to come,
what a rediculous statement, "end all action films" ha "go back to "traditional" movies, what the hell is a traditional movie,
wasn't the main theme for years in olden days invovling Knights or Robinhood, or armies of some sort, Altman obviously is too "enlightened" to realize that M.A.S.H. had violence, it was a war comedy (which I've always wondered about, war comedy, isn't a section in the video store)
and if Bin "Lama" is true to his faith, he never would have watched a movie like that, or any American made film

I can just picture it: Osama Bin Laden and all his buddies sitting round the TV with a couple of six-packs and a bowl chips, all ready for a marathon veiwing of the Diehard trilogy, The Rock, Air Force One and Exectutive desision. suddenly someone says, "Hey guys! I just got this crazy idea!".
Sorry, don't think so Old Binny boy is the kind of sick f**k who would have no trouble dreaming up the kind this kind of thing. Besides, no one in Afganistan can watch any TV because of the Teleban. Telly ban- geddit?

Does anybody besides me remember "Short Takes," a Robert Altman gem starring everybody in which almost everybody dies in the end, and those who are not dead are either wishing they were or a murderer?  I myself was suicidal for several days after watching that flick, but God forbid we put violence in any film, because then people will think violent thoughts.

And while we are making these backward steps in our society, I have a few more things to add to the list that he would probably also like to see.
1. Ban the use of computers
2. Ban alcohol
3. Make women cover themselves head to toe.
4. Ban TV
5. Not allow women to work/vote/talk out of turn

Wait! why bother changing our society, he could just move to Afghanistan instead!

Terrorism started when a Muslim, Hassan ibn al-Sabbah, who converted to Christianity was recruited by French and English knights to assasinate Muslim leaders in 1192.  This was in reprisal of the assasinations of an English and a French Leader by Muslims 6 and 5 years earlier, the first instance of a Jihad against European countries.

But then they probably watched the movie a couple of weeks beforehand.

Actually, the Europeans initiated the crusades first.. totally sacked Jerusalem, and the crusaders even KILLED other christians living in that area, deeming that they weren't real christians, I'm learning all this in my European History class in college.. so many interesting facts of history. And of course, after that, and until this day, the sh*t keeps hitting the fan. It's sad. -Jose

Our good friend Rob suggests only to watch a movie would you get an idea to fly a plane into a building. And I suppose this is what our Muslim terrorists were doing, right Robert? Watching American Movies and eating popcorn and going WOW, we should do that, let's fly a 767 into a building...

Grab a brain Mr. Director

While I don't agree with Altman's comment, and I think the retaping for ET was a little to giving in to terrorists, I understand his right to express his opinion.

You "boys" need to grow up. If you haven't seen M*A*S*H* (the film- not the crappy TV series), you need to sit down and watch it. Having read some of your responses, I sense you would really like this film, unless you do lack a brain to go with your pricks.

Lydia, perhaps next time you will read all of the comments instead of just "some."  You will notice not once is MASH bashed (yet).

As for your assessment of the TV series you couldn't be further off--the TV series did more for political satire than Altman and cohorts ever dreamed of. Now that you have cable in BFE maybe you will learn this by actually paying attention to some episodes.

And finally you have completely skirted (pun intended) the issue of the article other than to deflect to a "censorship is sometimes good" stance. Good for you!  That fascist training in the Maryland Militia is beginning to sink in.

Altman, despite his inability to make another good movie at this time, does still carry that "fatherly" figure stature in Hollywood.  They have a hard enough time coming up with anything interesting to watch without the developers becoming "oversensitised" to Altman's radical, rabid PC baloney.  Therefore, pack it up and stuff it where the sun don't shine, Oscar Meyer.

I realize after reading some of your articles on Yahoo that this will be tough for you to accept.  Perhaps you idolize Altman because you too have a case of "baloney" envy.

Come back anytime and comment.  The women we have here now know how to put the "woe" in women. Love, Power-trip

I agree.  Every time we change the slightest thing in a movie, book, TV show or whatever because of the September 11 attack the terrorists win one more battle in our fight against them.

Yes Tiny, (is that genital or brain size?) Australia has sent troops to the war.

The September 11 attack affected more that one country you idiot and if you think that the USA can fight Bin Ladden without help from anyone then you are even dumber than your comment made you seem.

P.S.  Being called "sonny" by a teenager is annoying so please stop it junior.

I appologize Bexley, I was not aware Australia had sent in troops. The New York Times had only said that the Aussies had sent in a small regimine of special forces, who we all know are there to clean out The U.S. soldiers porta potties. I guess the troops you are referring to are top secret and invisible. You are correct there are a few countries "Lending a hand" a.k.a. kissing our ass, so we don't get they're terrorists next. The ideal of Austrailia having a competent fighting force is hilarious. But then again you are a funny gal Bex. That's why I like you.

I would like to add, that since Australian soldiers are trained in Guerilla warfare, they were the most effective against the VC in Vietnam. In fact its well documented that the Aussie soldiers were so effective in Nam that the top VC general himself instructed his soldiers not to attack Australian troops because of the bad casualty rate. Instead they would wait for the Americans to come along where they had a better chance of kicking your asses. And speaking of ass kicking, every couple of years the American soldiers would come to Australia for joint training operations in which the 2 sides "play enemies". Want to guess who wins? Thats right, that "backward ass" country called Australia. You also know nothing about the SAS, do some research and you will find there are no better special forces in the world, period. They make SEALs look like girl scouts. There are also 1400 regular Australian Army troops (each one is worth a US Army ranger or green beret) being sent to Afghanistan. I challenge you TINY to go check these statements out for fact before you reply. And if you want to know how I know these things, well lets just say that 1st hand EXPERIENCE is better than your pathetic uneducated rantings.

Well said.  I think the Aussies and all the other countries which make USA so powerful should pull out and let them send their own people to get killed.  After all it is their war which they started.  Hmmm, imagine a whole fleet of tiny clones, that would be funny to watch on satellite TV.  But its no surprise, America think they are the best at everything.  Thats why the keep sending other countries troops in first.  I can confirm on the SAS training too.  A friend of mine is in the SAS and they had to take an American Green beret on a training mission and the poor "RambO" couldnt keep up.  AAWWW.  i guess that he'll be promoted to Aussie ass wiper next time.  Anyway, I think America should appreciate the help from other countries and not diss them and call them second rate.  This is why USA is in so much sh*t now, because of your big-heads and supremacist issues.  Dont turn the whole world against you with your ignorant, self-rightous and un-educated comments.

A few things idiot, one I am a male and have been since I was born.   Not like you who had to get that operation.

Two remember Vietnam where a piss poor country kicked your ass?.  Well during that war Australia only lost one of their helicopters, out of about 40 which was only 0.025 %  while American forces lost how many of theirs?.

If the US doesn't need our help with the war then why do they need two military installations in my town alone?.

The only reason I can see you think our military forces are pathetic is that they have never had to fight  amongst themselves.

Finally get bent prick.

Right on! to use a cliche. The objective of terrorism is to disrupt our lives. Mr Altman gives movies far more credit than they deserve. Millions of people watch all sorts of movies and a very small number try to emulate the behavoirs represented.

lydia,
you obviously have no idea what you are talking about, I made a comment refferencing M.A.S.H.,
but in the stance of Altman being hypocritical, in that it was a war movie, but you seem to follow the standard approach of the "skim" in which you look only at a sentence, not a paragraph, and procede to put together your "book" with blank pages,
I personally loved M.A.S.H., all time classic, in the future you should think before you type, and not temp the Random Shemps in to action, they are more organized then you think.

Random Shemp,

Why do think everyone is taking Mr Altman's comments so personal and resorting to sexual slurs. Perhaps there may be very little brain envolved here and lots of emotion. I personally don't need know anyone's sex or sexual orientation. Unless, of course, I'm interested in sexual intercourse as opposed to intellectual intercourse. The terrorist threat is real and deadly serious. War means dieing and not a sport.

Now we can add sex to violence. Lydia, to like or dislike a particlar work of art has nothing to do with brains. I watched M*A*S*H on the big screen perhaps before you were born and I did like it. I also liked the TV series.
