graphically, Gladiator should win, but Russell Crowe as Best Actor???  Isn't he always going to be Russell as _____, not like some other well accomplished actors whom seem able to lose themselves in a role?

Why it's ok if Russell gets an oscar!   > reply
Posted by Jack (jack@dtheatre.com) on February 13, 2001 11:43 AM

The reason why Russell Crowe was "Russell as Gladiator" in this film was because this was a hollywood film all the way and intended to be that way from it's early stage of development. Russell is still a great actor and always will be..

If I had to choose one of the nominees I'd have to say it would be Russell Crowe (mostly because my options are limited) I don't think Tom Hanks deserves it.. I think that Ashton Kutcher deserves it for his preformance in "Dude, Where's my car!" (Joking here).. but kidding aside I think it should have been Benicio Del Toro for "Way of the Gun" or Jared Leto for "Requiem for a Dream" but neither were nominated.

Au contraire! I thought Russel Crowe did a commendable job in Gladiator. He brought a lot of depth to the role, without having to overact or let his emotions fly off the handle. Too many people have never actually tried to act themselves, and yet still think they can judge actors. A warning: It's not nearly as easy as it looks.

I am an actor. Acting is a skill reserved for those too stupid to do anything else. It is not difficult and it angers me no end when people attempt to make what should be (and is) a fun profession into a serious "art" form.

It would seem that the "method" is the only thing that makes acting difficult.

By the way, some of the best actors (Olivier, Rush, Hopkins, to name but a few)in the field realize that it is a stupid profession and they are very aware that they are lucky to be making a living at it. These same people ridicule the "serious" actors.

Take Anthony Hopkin's recent comments on actors. To paraphrase he states that he doesn't understand why some actors make such a fuss about it.

There are some really good method actors out there to be sure, but, they tend to dour people who really need to look at what they have.

Oh my God! A dose of reality from one who actually is on the inside! Bravo friend! For all of my adult life, I have tried to understand why people who play at pretend get paid such obscene amounts of money AND...are considered wise in the way of the world. Thanks, well said!

Well, I guess it is all in your perspective.

Take for example Samuel Jackson.

In all the movies he is in, he is "Samuel Jackson" as ...., or .....

But he is STILL Samuel Jackson.  Same voice, and in many ways same person, persona.

I don't think you NEED to "lose yourself" to be effective.

Can we agree to disagree??

These awards are a joke and everyone knows it, the very ideal that Cary Grant never won an award is fricking ridiculous. Gladiator was a badly put togeather movie, about a Spainard who leads Romes Northern Army. Too bad Spain did not exist at the time, the very ideal of it is moronic, why did,'t they just have Bugs Bunny play Phoenixs part, it would have saved money (maybe)and been just as believible. With some good judging, Crouching Tiger will win, but as it goes: Hollywood is jam pack full of sh*t Heads, and this is the Hollywood event!

Shemp, you didn't pay any attention at all during Gladiator did you?

He wasn't a spaniard.  He was roman, and was always a Roman General.

The inaccuracy is that he had an Australian accent, but you've got to let some things slide.  Hell if it were 100% true to history, Maximus wouldn't be in it, Phoenix & his sister would be horribly disfigured and mentally retarded because of all the incest that happened before them....and everyone would be speaking in Latin and Germanic tounge.

he was a spaniard in the movie, the empire of rome wasn't restricted to the city of rome, italy. the romans pretty much conquered and assimilated all of europe, including a peninsula we now call spain. as far as the movie is concerned, it was a tipical hollywood major motion picture. with all of the expensive effects, love interests, tipical bad guys, and good guys who overcome all odds... why shouldn't it will best picture, actor etc. it made hollywood alot of money. by the way, what movie last year made the most money? that should be the best picture. if it isn't already nominated.... this is a cool site. keep up the good work! The Top grossing movies for 2000 in the USA only are as follows:

259,674,120   How the Grinch Stole Christmas
215,397,307   Mission: Impossible II
203,010,647   Cast Away
186,610,052   Gladiator
182,618,434   The Perfect Storm
172,786,332   What Women Want

157,299,717   X-Men
156,997,084   Scary Movie

I think that Requiem for a Dream should win the oscar for best picture but it's not the type of film that would win an Oscar and that's just my opinion.

No, he was not a Spaniard in it.  He was Roman, but the people that imprisoned him pretty much assumed he was a Spaniard.  Not sure why, but it was an assumption, and the name given to him.  You people don' tpay enough attention in movies.

Regardless of whom called Crow "Spainard" in the movie, be it slaves, slave masters, or politicians, it really does not matter. There was no SPAIN yet. Why didn't they just call him Brooklynite or Miami fag hag!

And an Australian accent!, geeez, isn't this guy an actor, ACT!!

Pathetic.

Apparently you did not watch Gladiator, because Russel Crows character is Spainard, he's called Spainard many times throughout, and his families domain lies in another country. As far as your other comments, try watching the movie first, and then mouthing off. I didn't say Russell Crow did not do a good job, but that movie f*cking sucked! The computer generated scenes of the cities was impressive. But the cheesy crap with his "black" friend was ridiculous. At least keep it realistic, that movie ranks up with Patriot as lame Disney like flicks, where PC is more important than a good, real story. And His Name wasn't Maximus Spainard, it was Maximus. Next time watch the movie more carefully. You want a great movie from that type of mold. Watch "Last of the Mohicans" with Daniel Day Lewis, THAT is a great movie, and they did it right!

Hey slick, Russel Crowe wasn't  a Spainard in the movie. He just said he was so they wouldn't know who he was or where he was from.

You are obviously a moron, how could he call himself Spainard if there was not yet a Spain!

Why didn't he just call himself "Jersey", I think everyone understands this but you. Next history class, that the one right after recess, and before gym, pay a little more attention. And Slick is not my name, its your Moms.
