Okay, I know this gets old. Everyone knows a guy who knows a guy who talked to the janitor who works for Warner Bros. and who knows, without a doubt, who the next Man of Steel is. I try to wade carefully through the muck to bring these rumors here, but by now you all know not to take this as gospel. James Caviezel is MAYBE the next Superman. This article was updated by inserting the word "not" and then changing it to "maybe." The debunkers have been debunked, it seems.Superhero Hype is reporting that the same tipster who correctly hinted that someone better than McG would be directing "Superman" has released this statement:
You remember I told you to relax about Superman? That a very, very trusted and experienced director we'd all love was coming over? That McG was just a blip? That everything would be fine?
Well, my same good buddy has informed me that, as of last Thursday night, Mister Jim Caviezel is [MAYBE] the new man of steel and what a perfect choice he is. Expect an announcement shortly. Also, this Superman Returns thing was just for the press release. The movie itself is called SUPERMAN (Reeve's was called SUPERMAN THE MOVIE) and it's starting everything from scratch. Brainiac. Krypton. Robots. Alien super-cities.
Yes, it's a friend-of-a-friend who knows a guy, etc. And the site does have the word "hype" right in the title. But the friend-of-a-friend was right once before, so I'm giving you all the heads up too. If he's right again, we'll be able to say that you heard it here second. If he's wrong, it won't matter anyway.
UPDATE (again): Superhero Hype posted a statement today, apparently from comic book writer Mark Millar (the original source for the Caviezel confirmation). The statement says that Millar is so sure of Caviezel's being cast as Superman, that he will write $1000 check to charity if he's wrong. Millar says his source is absolutely genuine and, despite possible diversions from the studio, the source says that Caviezel will be the one squeezing into blue tights when the cameras start rolling.
Ain't it Cool News had a source debunk the rumor and Millar's statement was in direct response to that.
So, of course, Knowles over at Ain't it Cool News has accepted the wager and made one of his own. So some charity will be getting paid off, either way. Hooray for internet geeks!
James Caviezel played Jesus in Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ."
"Superman" is due out Summer 2006 and will be directed by Bryan Singer ("X-Men").
