2nd Strong SPIDERMAN 2 Review!!
By Wind(up)bird on June 15, 2004 5:44 AM
Last summer, the sequel to the big screen adaptation of Marvel's X-MEN became one of those rare second films in a franchise to surpass the first in terms of quality last summer pundits blamed a box office drought in June on disappointing follow-ups. They term sequelitis was paraded around. I take issue with this label. Some of my favorite films have been sequels. THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KAHN, ALIENS, T2. Last summer, the sequel to the big screen adaptation of Marvel's X-MEN became one of those rare second films in a franchise to surpass the first in terms of quality. Well, this year, the crown jewel of the Marvel Universe... It's most iconic character... SPIDER-MAN... Has a sequel coming out. And by George, if this isn't the comic book movie we've always dreamed about.
But while it improves upon the webslinger's first big screen adventure in terms of how much the action sequences deliver and how much cooler this film's villain is, the story is a seamlessly smooth transition from the last installment to this one. Aside from the change in cinematographer and aspect ratio, it's hard to believe that this film wasn't shot simultaneously to the last one and then cut up in the editing room (a la THE LORD OF THE RINGS). And that may turn out to be a sad fact, considering how we have to wait more than just a year for the next chapter in Spidey's amazing story.
Now, I'm not going to go in to detail summarizing the plot. Because if you don't know the story-line for Spider-man 2 by now, you wouldn't be on this website reading this review.
Instead I'm going to gush about what works. Having seen two Spider-man films, I now analyze them by breaking the movies down into the three elements that I feel make these movies tick: story, romance, and villain.
Let's start with what we've all been waiting to see ever since a big budget live-action adaptation of this character was put into development:
DOC OCK!
I'll admit that when they announced he would be the lone villain in this film, I was weary. Spider-man has always been more similar to Batman than Superman in that he has a myriad of different villains he takes on as opposed to an arch nemeis like Lex Luthor. But one thing that I thought would be tricky in a Spidey movie franchise is that so many of the popular villains are scientists turned villains. Leaving not much difference in their tragic Frankenstein-esque origin stories (complete with character arcs featuring redemption).
Luckily, Raimi didn't really make Norman Osbourne tragic, so much as spoiled. And Willem Dafoe's character certainly didn't redeem himself by movie's end. A good decision, as it allows Octavious' character traits to feel fresh. Also, if I had one complaint about the first Spider-man film, it's that Green Goblin fealt a little weak as a threatening villain, and his costume was lackluster. If you agreed, fear not, because Dock Ock's tentacles are a force of mass destruction to be reckoned with; several action sequences throughout the movie add up to the best onscreen (superhero vs. supervillain) comic book style fights we've ever seen. But the stakes don't stop short with the protagonist duking it out with the antagonist (and all the structural damage and innocent bystanders in-between). While the goblin cold throw some pumpkins into a crowd, Doc Ock's' "big bad" (for all you "Buffy..." fans) plan at the end is a potential threat to half the city of New York. Meanwhile Molina's performance brings Octavious to life. He immerses himself in the role and takes the character from the four-color page to celluloid like we've never seen before in a comic book movie.
THE STORY-LINE
What's always made Peter Parker a great character is his angst. This film picks right up where the last one left off after he branded himself as being cursed and really makes you feel for the guy. Throughout the movie, his relationships are tested with everyone; Harry, MJ, even Aunt May...
The supporting cast of characters seem to be evolving as well. Harry's obsession with avenging his father's death (which he blames on Spider-Man) swells. And by movie's end, the tension between Harry and Peter over the webslinger will heat up to a plot point that will make the wait for the next film almost as unbearable as the 3 years following Vader's reveal to Luke that he is his father.
Easter Eggs like the appearance of Dock Connors as Peter's Professor may be a give away to fans, but they're also an effective set-up for the futre installments of this ongoing "story" that Sam Raimi is telling. On that note, finally...
THE ROMANCE
I defended the changes made with regard to Peter being able to manifest his own webbing, and not having to create 3m corporation shooters. But merging Gwen Stacy into Mary Jane annoyed me. The biggest action sequence, which I usually believe should be the climax of a film, came earlier in the first Spider-Man, at the unity fair scene. The final showdown between the goblin and Spider-man was a smaller, more intimate affair, where Peter was forced to choose between the woman he loves (the few or the one, for all you "Star Trek" fans) and the needs of the many. But he didn't make that choice. Somehow Spider-man history was rewritten and he saved MJ and the people on the bus. This was a defining moment in the history of the Spider-man character, because it set the stage for him pushing away the people he cares about, for being too close to them could cause harm. The exclusion of this plot point from the film has bothered me and a lot of other die hard fans ever since. Well, tonight, when I walked out of the theatre, it was no longer an issue.
When the teaser for this film appeared on screens last Christmas, it featured MJ grilling Peter on whether or not he loved her. The advertisements on the TV when they debuted the new trailer during "The Apprentice" proudly exclaimed that "the story continues June 30." It certainly does. The love story, that is. Because that's what Sam Raimi has created. An ongoing love story set against the backdrop of the trials and tribulations of a superhero.
Make no mistake, it's the character development and love story that propelled the first film's gross beyond Sony's hopes of 300 million to an out of this world 400 million dollar gross domestically. This time, I think Sony has what will become only the second film to gross north of 500 million at the U.S box office.
In the first film, Peter learned that with great power, comes great responsibility. This film is all about sacrifice and how it plays into love. He will make one for Mary Jane. And she will do the same thing for him. And that's what the last, beautiful, frame of the movie is all about.
All in all, if the first Spider-man was STAR WARS...a charming, playful, whimsical adventure...this film is THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK...a darker, larger scale, "super" hero's quest. But with Raimi at the helm, I have no fears that the next movie will be a RETURN OF THE JEDI.

You see, it IS possible to write a review of a movie without giving away the entire plot. Although, the whole "first movie was like STARWARS second one's like EMPIRE STRIKES BACK" is a bit of a cliche.

I completely agree with this review all the way down to the love story parts. But the best addition to this movie that I feel the first didn't quite have is comedy. I remember laughing out loud at many a Spiderman comic. The script doesn't disappoint. Some parts were simply hilarious. And I know it's been mentioned, but seriously though, the fight scenes were the best I've ever seen in any film, EVER. I didn't know Doc Ock could be so cool. Rave reviews for Spidey 2, you will love it!

Spidey 2 delivers in a big way. It keeps its viewers enthralled on many different levels of interest from action to romance to morality/repsonsibility.Very possibly, could be the greatest super hero movie ever made. It inspires and gives hope that we all can make a difference if we believe in ourselves!

Good movie, I didnt think I wasted my $7.50 but it was very predictable. The runaway wedding, the unmasking of Spiderman, the wife of Ock being killed. A lot of other things in the movie were extremely over dramatized like Harry's hate for spiderman, the scenes between peter and MJ, the re-itteration of the upside down kiss, the list goes on. I was VERY happy to see room for the 3rd Spiderman but what scares me is how theyre going to play in these 2 factors...1. MJ and peter as a couple and 2. Harry knowing that Spiderman is Peter and Peter having the brains to figure out that Harry would become what his father was. I walked away from that movie with a lot of unanswered questions mostly about the scene with the landlords daughter...what are we supposed to expect from that, just from the first showing of her in the movie we already know that she likes him...so what was with that scene?

it was too long.. too much of talking not enough action .. way too much of "-I love you.. do you? - euh.. maybe.. hold on I gotta go save the city again and i'll come back" and for the villain part: once he have is big ass sun what will he do with it? and the Goblin part.. in the first movie he was killed by spider man, is costume and his cool Jet was destroyed.. why is it now standing brand new in the middle of is secret room?

I can't believe that this is what spider man has come down too.
He removes his mask.
acts like superman to stop a train
A train car full of people know who he is.
I was just shocked.
didn't spider man have web shooters and smart comments for everything. what happened to those ?
I was probably expecting more than what i got. I mean part 1 was great. what happened ?
Oh yeah one other thing - how deep is this river ? This river must be really deep to allow the ball of energy to be swallowed under.
Spiderman 2 was a predictable movie. sorry to say but i could of called most of the scenes. The work was not that great either - spiderman looking like a rubber chicken. That's not funny
I hope part 3 is a whole lot better.

Well, I went into the theater, very excited, and came out very disappointed. Spiderman defiantly did a little too much with the whole, “Hey I don’t need a secret identity anymore thing”! Half of New York has seen his face now, and whether or not they are trustworthy (which I believe the train people to be) he messed up one of the most important rules of being a superhero. Another disappointing feature was the fact that some of the newer characters were not explained well at all, they were just sort of there. If the landlord’s daughter, and Mary Jane’s fiancé are coming back, this movie certainly didn’t give them a good intro, and if their not coming back, they should have been left out.
I’m still looking forward to number 3, but wow, I’m really hoping that it will turn out better.

ok, first off on the bit about everyone knowing his identity, only the people on the train car, MJ, and Harry got to know, that is not a lot. The reason that he "forgot the superhero rule" is that he is human and not perfect and that he makes mistakes. He is not Superman, that is the point in having him make mistakes. That is why everyone loves Spiderman, he is the everyday guy that wants to do right but makes mistakes. He is not perfect and indestructible. He is just a guy. If you were in his situation and you couldn't see you would also take off your mask. You wouldn't care if people saw your face because the important thing is to save their lives, not hide your identity.
The bit about making jokes, sure Spidey does that when there isn't a lot of danger and when he is not having to save a bunch of people. Yet, when the danger is piled on and he is stressed out, he doesn't make as many jokes as you like to think. He also made the joke of "here's your change" in the scene with the fight in the bank. His jokes are normally to insult the people he is fighting. In the movie he is fighting his idol, he is not going to insult someone he looked up to. He still believes a good part of Octavius exists under the influence of the arms.
How often do you read Spiderman comics? I've been an avid collector for about 10 years now, even having issues that go back to the first appearance of Mary Jane.
The reason he doesn't have webshooters is that would make a convoluted story. Also originally Stan Lee(creator of Spidey) wanted to make the shooters organic like they are in the movie, but he thought it would gross people out so he didn't. So in reality it is closer to what Stan wanted than the comics.
As to what Doc Ock would do with the sun...uh, how about make a cheap power source for all to use? That reason for the fusion stuff was covered in the movie, were you not paying attention?
The scene with the daughter and land lord wasn't meant to mean much. It is just showing one of the normal days in Peter Parker's life, to build his characterization and show you how human he is. That is it. If they aren't key people, but you need them for a little support, no need to go into them a lot. Not until needed.
Same with Doc Conners. He would go on to become the Lizard, important thing, but right now he is not that important so no need to go into his history in the movies. That would be a waste of time and distract the audience from the point of the movie.
Also Betty Brant(the secretary) played an important rule in Spidey's life. I believe she dated Peter Parker, but never knew he was Spidey, she in fact hated Spidey when she blamed him for the death of her brother at one point. Yet, you don't get all that information in the movie cause it isn't important since it is not part of the main story. So for now she is just a lady that works as a secretary, you only barely get her name. Hell, they didn't even say he name in the first movie.
If they plan on bringing Venom into a future movie one way they could do it, and has been talked about, is having the alien symbiote brought back to space with John Jameson(probably by accident). At that point you would do more with his character, but not until.
The bit about Harry wanting to kill Spidey being dramatized was important. It shows just how mad he is at Spidey, how deep his hatred goes. In the comics he was using drugs when his dad was killed. He eventually died of a drug OD. That is why they have him drinking so much in the movie. It is to show the extent of his obsession. Something that you need to dramatize.
There were a few things that are in the movie for a reason that if you aren't an avid reader of Spidey you won't get. The scene with his costume in the trash and him walking away is to pay tribute to the front cover of Amazing Spiderman #50(the first appearance of the Kingpin). The title of that story was "Spiderman No More" which is why in the scene where Peter is talking to the memory of Uncle Ben he says "I am Spiderman no more." He then repeats the "no more" It is to pay tribute to that. The scene in the hospital is to pay tribute to one of Sam Ramia's earlier movies(I forget the name of it off hand). The guy walking the dog that gets in the elevator is Todd McFarlane, the creator of Spawn and the guy that was the artist that first drew Venom. Also Stan Lee had his normal cameo saving a girl's life again.

well, saw the movie, and as i don't follow the comics found it to be an incredibly predictable movie and was somewhat annoyed at the whole peter mj love thing which see-sawed through this movie. the fact that not everyone who sees this movie is an 'avid spiderman comic book collector, who hasn't missed an issue in over 4 years!' means that a lot of people wouldn't have picked up on the subtle details that were mentioned by some major fan of spiderman above. so taking away all of those details to your average viewer there wasn't much to see. drawn out love story, predictable dialogue, with some horribly fake looking scenes of spidey flying through the city. however, i did think the fight scene was quite well done....to try to end on a good note and all ^_^

The Hobglobin is a Thug that stumbles and finds a replica of the Green Goblin costume its just different colors. If a Goblin returns which I dont think will happen untill the forth movie if there is one...it will be the green goblin there is like 5 or so Green Goblins in the Spider-Man Saga Harry is the Second.

I don't usually post on these kinds of sites, but Spider-Man 2 is an interesting case, so I'll change my policy for this one. I think Sam Raimi had some really good ideas and I really loved the romance plotline of the film, but I thought that Raimi ended up making a saturday morning cartoon. The wonderful thing about spider-man is that he's got a normal life and he has to balance all his normal problems of the teenage years with all the problems of a web-slinger. However, Raimi has created an unrealistic mood for his film. The most notable example of this is the performance and development of the character Harry Osborne. Raimi has made a 2-dimensional character who has only one motive to his existence. This works in a comic book and a cartoon, but not in a movie. I simply didn't believe the emotions of the film. Also, some of Raimi's touches, such as having the bank have sacks of gold coins, work in pen and ink, but not on the silver screen. The task of any filmmaker who sets out to tell a fantasty is to make us believe, at least for the two hours we're in the theatre. Raimi didn't do this for me.
I've got a pretty short list of ways I would improve the film:
1. Shoot all the Peter Parker scenes or non-Spider-Man/crime-fighting scenes handheld, with grittier lighting.
2. Less soap opera-like performances.
3. More character depth.
These are all pretty surface-deep problems that could be fixed pretty easily, and that's why it's so hard to watch Spider-Man 2. It gets so close to being an amazing film, but it falls short because of a few bad choices.
***This opinion comes from a filmmaker, not a comic-book buff.

spiderman 3 - jamison son goes in space brings back symbiote thing.harry is hobgoblin or green goblin 2 (hope he looks better) and dr.connors is lizard.spiderman beats lizard and saves his teacher somehow or just kills him.spiderman faces harry but harry beats him up.the symbiote infects spiderman and he is a lot stronger.he then kills harry.
spiderman 4 - spiderman struggles with symbiote while kraven (or someone good) comes and attacks him.spiderman barely wins just like in all his fights and he gets the symbiote out and it infects eddie who had been shown during movie.eddie becomes venom.
spiderman 5 - spiderman vs. venom.aunt may dies and peter gets real mad and beats venom.
spiderman 6 - peter hates his life ever since he became spiderman.everything has just went wrong so he stops bein spiderman.meanwhile have a good villain to finish the spiderman stories off come and kidnap mj.then peter realizes he will lose another loved 1 if he doesnt kill whoever villain is.he becomes spidey again and saves mj.then at the end peter and mj get married.

What the heck was that all about??? Me thinks they'll end it in 3. Why you ask?? Well in the comics, MJ and alot of others don't find out Spider mans true identity for ages am I right?? (Someone who has read all of the comics can correct me if I'm wrong). In the movie, almost all the main characters find out about Spiderman so I can see that the process has been sped up possibly to make more sense etc. Anyway just my opinion.
I like the movie, haven't read all the comics but know enough about Spiderman for me to like the film.. There were a few issues that could have been cleared up but its a movie so all I have to say to the people that bitch and complain is stop whining and ejoy the fact that someone has tried to do the best they can to recreate an image of a hero that was created for comics. Reading the comics leaves it to the reader to use his or her imagination but a movie is a directors interpretation of the whole thing...

I think they should have the whole crew, Peter, MJ, Aunt May, Jamerson, the works, all skipping down the street and one of them stops suddenly and points skyward and exclaims "WHAT THE HELL IS THAT!?" and at that moment a cowboy on a stick horse comes crashing out of a tall glass building and starts falling all the way down towards them going YEEEEEHEEHEEHEEEHAAAAW!!!
and then in bullet time effect he lands in the middle of the whole crowd of people followed by a nuclear explosion.

i think that harry might turn into venom in 3 if that other company lets them use it.

the villain for the third movie will probably be hobgoblin or the green goblin #2 and doc conners will be deeper into the story line. jhon jameson will go to space and bring back venom or carnage at the end

Posted by A random shemp (No Email) on July 9, 2004 1:59 PM
it says that the villain is OVIOUSLY the green goblin # 2 which is harry

|
Posted by A random shemp (No Email) on July 10, 2004 5:33 PM
if he was going to do that then the director would of introduced the girl in the second 1 ....
and my opinion on spiderman 3 is that peters teacher tries to regrow his arm and turns into the lizard and harry turns into the hobgoblin and the lizard gang up 2 kick spideys ass for some reason and meanwhile the guy who mj was goin 2 marry goes and brings back that simbiote thingy which sets up #4 and in the end spidey kicks there ass...
o yea and remember doc octupus isnt dead so maybe he will come bak in #4 too.
and to all those sick ppl who do not have anything else 2 do go post your shit on some porn forum not here...ya know?

That makes more sense than all the rest of them. I don't know if they'll keep making them although it would be good to get the full story of Spiderman.
Venom will be a little crazy for the CGI team to control as he's off his nuts!
I agree that it'll just be Lizard and Greengoblin 2.

I think they should have Stinky Pete from Toy Story 2 as the villian in the 3rd Spiderman movie. Or a moldy bag of walnuts ooooor a telephone that just won't stop ringing. =D

ok so it's official that i hate tobey mcguire. I've never seen spiderman played soooo horribly. tobey mcguire cannot act, it makes me wonder what the hell raimi was thinking when he casted him. did anyone else notice that he always had this strung out look on his face when he was talking? as far as i remember spiderman didn't do crack.
Plus come on that little chinese girl can pick up spiderman??
she could be spiderman dammit, and prolly do a better job than tobey mcguire. in conclusion i hope that CGI spiderman in part 3 has a bigger role than tobey mcguire and that cgi spiderman should get an oscar for having to deal w/ tobey mcguire's bad acting
