Topic: Film 1st Look at Gus Van Sant's ELEPHANT
By Wind(up)bird on September 23, 2003 2:41 PM

Check it.  Winner of the Golden Palm(or Palm D'Or) and Best Director prizes at the 2003 Canne Film Festival, Gus Van Sant's "Elephant" has its first set of trailers.  The film is a fictional account of school violence in America.

The film was shot inside a high school in Van Sant's hometown of Portland, Or.  After three months of searching for talented unknowns and non-actors, Van Sant then used the cast's experiences and perspectives of high school life to craft the script.

I saw the premiere of "Elephant" in Portland Org. I was also in the movie (though i got cut out)When i saw the movie I was amazed at how it spoke to teens. I could tell that the adults didn't really get it but anyone under 20 knew exactly what Mr. Van San was saying. The most briliant movie and director.

Hello.
I wasn't in that movie. But, its so clear that it talks to me ; it isn't a "movie" ; its not a documentary ; but something between.
For sure not entertaining. Maybe you could feel schocked in seeing this... film.

A young, but no more a teen, Frenchman.

I sae thw movie or documentary or whatever 3 weeks ago in France. I was deeply impressed by the completely different view that Gus van Sant had on this school massacre. He didn't blame anyone/anything, he just showed the situation in which the students live.
Does anybody of you can tell me whether this movie will be shown in germany???

"Elephant" and that T-shirt!   > reply

I was also at the primier and was so drawn into the film.  What a perfect and real depiction of what it's like to be a high school student in today's world.

Also, I really wanted a t-shirt just like the one character had on with the black bull on it and I found one from someone who put it on ebay.  It's really cool and people always comment on it.

I saw Elephant two weeks ago in manhattan. Quite honestly I think many kids can relate to the shooters and the other kids. But the way the film was put together was fresh and new. It really built up and exploded at the end. Plus, no offense but the ending was wonderful.

wow... that is all i can say!  being an extra was super exciting and it led to many other projects for me!  I got a speaking role of 14 lines in another movie called Thumbsucker... anyway, as soon as you figure out when the movie will be playing in your area, please spend the $8.00 to see it.  Alot of work was put into making the movie and as a director, wouldn't you want to exhibit your art?  Gus is a great guy and eventhough he had the most stuck up actors, his movie truned out to be an amazing work of art!  You rock Gus!

the trailer was novel..   > reply

I made no presumptions about the movie, even after watching the trailer several times during my cigarette breaks.  The filming technique I would say is novel though it has the same conditions of being in school manifest in clarity with the broken glass of the director's camera..I don't take a big liking to Spielburg's works, but this certainly is the antithesis of it.  When Gus Van Sant breathes life into a film, he usually shifts between characters to destroy the myth of a central force by Truth.  I find this gives the viewer a more distant relation to the film, since Hollywood has a reputation for exposing a poetic outlook.  I am sure these kids end up surviving the whole episode, otherwise there would be a whole courtroom drama to deal with.. In any case, the trailer's ambiguity can only produce advertisement through a few guess shots.  In any case, it looks gorgeous on my monitor screen after a steaming shower where egg is going through the drainpipe..I leave it up to Gus VSant to prove that modern film works go against the traditional concept started from Homer's misconception of time..into an entropy which is very much the wave of the future..
