John Woo Directs Next Ninja Turtles Movie

If ever you thought three supremely bad films were enough to kill a franchise, The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles might just prove you wrong. Our shelled vigilante buddies are returning back to the screen, and this time thanks to legendery action director John Woo.

Director John Woo and producer Terence Chang's Digital Rim Entertainment have signed a deal with Mirage Studios to develop and produce a new, computer-animated feature film based on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise, Variety reported. Woo plans to take the film down a different route from its predecessors. Avoiding the "cowabunga dude!" surf-talking approach of the early 90s films, Woo plans to return to the dark, edgy feel of the original comic.

Digital Rim has already produced a new animated Turtles TV pilot, which inspired the company to pursue the film rights, the trade paper reported. The pilot is currently being shopped at the networks. The third and last Turtles film was released in 1993. Woo hopes to bring the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie to cinemas around Christmas 2002.

Tiny, did you not read the the article?  Have you ever read the origanl comics?  Pizza craving, there was none. The only thing there was was some bad ass storylines and even better drawings. If it's anything like the comics, I'm there.

If you've ever read the original comics.. not the (soft and fluffy fun for kiddies) comics, but the ORIGINAL comic before Disney ruined it.  The Turtles.. were dark, with snapping turtle beaks, they USED the weapons, instead of just clubbing people, they sliced them up.  The turtles were mean, vicious, violent, and PERFECT for this movie ;)

HURRAY!!

The real, TRUE, Eastman/Laird TURTLES KICKED SHELL!  If it's truly like the original comics, I might pay 8.50 more than once.

How many, if any, of the mainstream turtles characters (Splinter, Shredder, Bebopp, Rocksteady, KC Jones and that brian dude) are in the original comic?

it is all good, john woo rocks. only if it was good cg like final fantasy. not like shrek. but if he wants the movie to be out by 2002 it is going to have to be like shrek or even worse. i just want it to be pretty real looking. the humans in shrek sucked. but who knows. i will bite my  tongue.

The "dark, edgy feel of the original comic.." you've got to be kidding me. It's about 4 teenage turtles eating pizza with some ninja skills? It's not Batman!

It makes sense though.. despite John Woo's amazing action directing talent, he is yet to make a film that required more than 30 IQ points to understand.

RE: RE: John Woo Directs Next Ninja Turtles Movie   > reply

Either A: You can't read, or B: YOU have an IQ of less then 30.  No sh*t sherlock it's not Batman,  it's closer to spawn in the drawing and darkness.  If you question the statment about the dark edgy feel you aparently haven't read the comic.  And even if you haven't I'm sure you can read what those you have read them had to say.

If anyone can salvage the Turtle franchise from the pizza-eating, surf-talking, cheesy-line-spewing that it turned into, John Woo can.  I hope it really does go back the original edginess from the early comics.

Live action would be better. Especially for a comic book movie. I think cg would only stand to lower its credibility as a serious action movie.
Then again, Final Fantasy may rewrite all the rules...

Splinter and Shredder were big players in the original books; also April O'Neil, usually showing some nice cleavage.  Bebop and Rocksteady were in the newer comics, but I don't remember seeing them before the animated series.

Incidentally Kevin Eastman later used the money he got from selling out the Turtles to found the really cool Museum of Fine Sequential Art in Northampton:

In the original comics, their primary nemesis were the cronies in the Foot clan, run by Shredder. April and Splinter were there, and I recall a few run-ins with Baxter Stockman (the fly-guy) and the triceratops-looking aliens, though I don't remember their names.

Hey!  Go back and read the original comics from the late 80's and early 90's.  THERE WAS NO PIZZA EATING!  And the turtles actually kicked ass!  And I would have put the original Shredder up against any of Batman's Rogues Gallery.  I'm telling you.  Go back and read some of the original comics.  You won't be disappointed.

Erm. Hollywood hosed the Turtles to begin with. From what I understand, the REAL Turtles wouldn't have made it to Saturday morning or maybe even primtime.

Just think for a second. John Woo must think he can do something with this. Anyone who knows the Turtles from that age would prolly be of age to see them a little edgier. I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do...

I'll believe it when I see it.
If they can stay loyal to the original comics and keep the Hollywood number-crunchers off the set - both of which is rarely accomplished - the movie will more than likely be R-rated and badass.
But we'll see.

The Ninja turtles have seen the end of the line. After Jar Jar I don't think stereotyping surfers would rake in cash. Plus It won't exactly headline with the new Matrix and LotR(Lord of the rings for you dumbasses). I am sure that tmnt will be d-e-a-d.

All I know is a liked the all the turtles movies. And if they can put Toka and Razar in a 100% real life movie, they better put Beebop and Rocksteady in a computer aided version. I still can't believe woo is the director!

From what I have heard about the real comics, this could be good. But don't forget that Hollywood has to sell it's tickets to the kiddies, so most likely they'll find ways to make this PG-13.

The "TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES" were some of the best childrens icons of its time. These guys were like the Pokemon of the early '90's. Don't get me wrong i'm still a fan of the turtles, but does anybody really want to see a new, revamped turtle 'style'? i mean i loved the first two turtle movies (the third movie sucked). one of the things i most enjoyed from those movies was the comedy. watching the turtles dance around while they were kicking the ass of their enemy was most enjoyable. but all i'm saying is, do people want to see a more serious side of the turtles? i mean that's one of the main things that made them so popular.

Posted by A random shemp (No Email) on August 11, 2001 4:53 PM

How serious can mutaded turtles with the personalities of teenagers be?
The creators of the series didn't envision a dark spawn-like comic, they created the turtles as a parody of other ninja comics like Ronin...

Oh right....so i would guess that it's CGI that makes the movie right? that's why a movie with such great visuals like Final Fantasy cost 115 mil to make and ,as of today, only made about 40 mill, while shrek has made about 250 million so far with graphics that are clearly are no where near as advanced or detailed. Why is this? Better story, much funnier, more fleshed out characters. I hope turtles go the route of Shrek since , regardless of whether they were done by mirage or archie....they always had a more or a abstract cartoony feel. Screw ff cgi

John woo is easily the most influential action director of the last 20 years. The Turtles were one of the coolist things ive ever had the pleasure to experience (except for that recent live action television show. that was sh*t!)
Woo making an ultra violent version of the turtles would be one of the greatest things that could ever happen to cgi cinema. especially if he includes all his usual cliches. you know akimbo gun play, doves, candles, honour etc. those of u who like me read the comic now what im talking about. and those of u who didnt think about the cartoon. didnt it piss u off that the turtles never killed anyone.

I remember seeing TMNT 1 in the theatre when it came out and then later TMNT 2.  I originally liked 2 better than 1, but I recently bought 1 on DVD, and was impressed with it even today.  1 is definitely the best.  Never saw 3, but everyone I knew who did said it was lame.  I CAN'T WAIT for the new John Woo film!

It's ok to just speak for yourself...

Both TMNT 1 and 2 kicked ass while the third one didn't kick that much... ass i mean. So what if it's the late 80s/early 90s, I won't stop watching Twin Peaks, Breakfast Club, Tron etc etc because they have bad cases of hair or clothes beyond this world.

No lame trends of another era can take the fun out of a movie with ninjafighting, pizzaeating, oneliners and 80s-teen-talk/jokes! Deal with it!

I feel personally that John Woo is the by far the best action director ever.  About the whole 30 IQ thing.  You should watch his Hong Kong movies in chinese with subtitles on to really see his works of art.  His american movies don't come close to the mastery of Hard Boiled or The Killer.  They have an underlying story thats almost transparent but its there.  Very dramatic!

i do, the original turtles were so bad ass, all wore red, and they were big and mean and hey had hatred in their eyes, not- like earlier stated- "fluffy fun kid stuff"
The original movie was true to the Tv show, and being a child of that generation, i loved it, the second and third definately lacked (though if you notice "yoshimitsu" from tekken is the name of the boy and his mom put together from the third, back in time movie.

I can't fit any images but I do have a bref summary from the nonanimated TMNT 4 movie. Here it is:

  TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES IV:
    PAST LIVES
    FUTURE TENSE

Four figures walk by a Radio Shack, arguing over an event, apparently someone killed someone, and here we meet the TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES; Raphael, Leonardo, Donatello and Michaelangelo. Michaelangelo though, sees a TV in Radio Shack, and they turn to watch their friend, April O' Neil, who is doing an interview.
April (Paige Turco) is interviewing a black man named Baxter Stockman (Joe Morton), who is demonstrating his new creation, the Mousers, for his company, TGRI, Technical Global Resources Industries. As we watch the Mousers under three to five minutes take care of five rats...the interview comes to an end, and we learn that April and Baxter are old friends. April, once Baxter's assistant, helped design the Mousers' programming, way back in the day. Yet, Baxter needing money, embezzled funds, and April eventually turned him in to Channel 3 news, thus getting a reporter job on the spot.
April of course, thinks that the man would have harsh feelings, but yet, none is there. As April reads her list of stories she will be covering at 11, robberies, a rapist, etc., Baxter wants to show her something...
Meanwhile, the Turtles are now at home, and arguing over Raphael's apparent bodycount in a fight earlier with the toughest street gang in New York City. Casey Jones (Elias Koteas) enters, and a few puns, (bad ones) are knocked around, until Raphael finds a hole in the wall, and no trace of Splinter, except for a trail of blood!!!
After a security check in the elevator, as a dark red eye watches, April and Baxter step out of the elevator, on a bottom level of TGRI, she is shown a mass warehouse of Mousers, where she realizes the robberies w... was BAXTER!!! Odd enough though, Baxter knows about her and the Turtles, and after observing them, he has already "taken care of the rat." As April escapes, she is thrown in the slime ridden sewers, and three mousers are sent after her to finish Baxter's remaining "evidence."
April keeps running until the mousers corner her, and then, in 3 quick flashes, Raphael, Donatello and Leonardo stand before her, as April faints from the excitement.
The Turtles, following the trail of blood to where April was, and saved her, realize that Baxter is the one behind everything, their Master's disappearance and the robberies. It's time to go back and fight them.
Entering the lower TGRI levels with April's guidance, the turtles find Baxter, and the battle ensues, but not for long. After Baxter hits the self-destruct button, Raphael knocks him out. Raphael and Leonardo, finding C4, try to close the tunnel off, for good reason though; the self-destruct is where the Mousers destroy the inner chambers of TGRI... where the turtles and April are at. Mousers though, digging thru the gravel, keep coming and coming, and finally Michaelangelo and the others escape successfully, only to assume Baxter made it out safely.
Back in the Subway Sewer Lair, the turtles laugh and joke, except Leonardo, who now, made Raphael see Splinter about his killing and vulgarities. Splinter tries to again show Raphael that anger clouds his mind, and that the path of anger turned inward, is a dangerous enemy. Of course, Raphael, has heard this before, and after meditating and hearing some of his most feared memories, Raphael leaves to go join the others...
But that is interrupted when Future Donatello (known as Don) and Future Raphael (known as Raph) enters the picture, and takes Casey, the Present TMNT, and Master Splinter, into the Future.
In the Future...
The Turtles learn of a great war, where when the ice caps melted, and the Green House Effect actually occurred, how when the water began to rise all over the world, so did the rats. The Future TMNT explain that the whole world is like that. Global Warming just came into effect eventually. So now, there is streets, but no cement streets; the streets are water.
Yet also in the telling of the Future's past, also about the future's present. An old friend turned enemy of future Donatello, named Verminator-X (Jeremy Irons) is believed to be holding some form of plan of attack, to take the city when it's down. His plan? To get immortality. How? Donatello won?t exactly explain why, or how, but he says it?s possible. Also is the loss of Leonardo and Michaelangeo, and how Raph lost his eye. Other things foreshadowed, is the trouble and things that lead the Turtles to lead the mutant revolution into the public eye, leading the war to Washington, and how mutants were made worthy of existence with the humans, living side by side. Of course, lately, humans have been abusing the system, and mutants and humans are now not getting along as they used too, and Verminator X believes as violence as the only way, leading the path to war.
Also, is how Raph has a daughter, named Julia. Blonde hair, blue eyes. He says she was adopted. Raphael of course doesn't understand why, he hates kids, so why would his present self have one? And in this, Raph tells his past self, Raphel to cool down.... don't be such a hot head. Of course, does Raphael ever listen?? No....
Armaggon attacks though, and the mutant land shark, and break into Turtle CO. As the Turtles charge the attackers, taking the defensive, Don and Raph come to a conclusion. They would have taken the Time Slip Generator already, for he has done it before. So why not? Then, Future Raph runs upstairs, where lo and behold, an enemy from the past is kneeling down, chatting with Julia and her teddy bear, Chet. It's Oruku Saki (Jackie Chan), also known as... THE SHREDDER!!!! The Shredder tells Raph to put his weapons down, and he complies, but the Shredder kills her. Saying that he has returned from the past, to take revenge on the Turtles in any way he can for he has seen what they do to him, the Shredder leaves a calling card, and exits. Raphael enters the room, again proclaiming, "big deal ... she's a f*cking ki--" of course, future Raph jumps his past self, and almost kills him, and we learn it is his birth child.
From here, we learn that the whole truth has not been told. Raph married a woman named Jennifer Jones, and they bore a daughter, Julia. It was a human child, a rarity, to Don. But... Jennifer died, after a mugger came into Raph's bar, told him to put his weapon down. When he didn't ... he just shot a girl. The girl though, happened to be his wife. And in becoming a family man, Raph thrust the Future TMNT into the war for mutants and humans living in peace, due to the human-turtle marriage. But sadly, Raph, the turtle with to himself, not alot to lose, but really the most. Now Raph has no family...except his brother Donatello.
The calling card? Future Don and Raph must fight Verminator and his mutants, his army, for plans on a "disk." Raphael and Casey sneak out of Turtle Co., following them, and return back to Turtle Co., to explain what they have heard...and seen.
The TMNT confront their Future TMNT about why they are there...apparently they have the weaponry to defeat the army...but Don says its not going to win the full war. And that the war...isn't a war of mutant equality...it's a war of IMMORTALITY. And Don has the secret to immortality, hence why Verminator wants "a disk." Raphael and Casey explain their plan though, which leads our heroes to Verminator, who's atop of the World Trade Center...
The Turtles beam into the Time Slip Generator...
So arriving at the hideout via the Time Generator, we learn who is Verminator?s partners are, we met Armaggon, but the Shredder who was retrieved from the past?. flees. The only person that Verminator knows that the Turtles could never defeat; the Shredder, Oruku Saki. Now, the battle is on?. The TMNT gang dispatched of the rouge mutants/humans easily, and now, Verminator-X and Armaggon remain. Armaggon retrieves a large machine he built, the Mecha-Shark, and the Turtles take that on. In the end, the Mecha-Shark is defeated, and yet the Time Generator malfunctions and Armaggon escapes by jumping and grabbing Leonardo from the Present and jumping into the portal. Rapheal and Future Donatello, and Casey Jones go inside after him, while the others stay there. But yet, Rats begin to enter the compound at an alarming rate and then the Rat King (Paul Newman), a figure supposedly dead, is there facing the remaining turtles.
In the other dimension, Rapheal and Armaggon duke it out after Don & Casey is knocked out.
Back in the future the gang takes on Verminator-X, the Shredder and the Rat King. The battle hits the roof, after the building begins to flood, and up on the roof, the battle continues. In the end, the Rat King meets his end by going off the edge into a firing end, exploding. Verminator-X meets his end by getting a virus inserted in him, making him a vegetable, also meets an explosive end. The Shredder is challeneged by Future Raph, and the two duke it out, mono, emono. In the end only one stands, but he stands quietly, and briefly.....
In the other dimension, it comes down to Present Raph and Armaggon, and in the end, the torpedo, and as Armaggon is knocked over the waterfall, the torpedo falls and hits Armaggon, but somehow, creates a rip in the space-time continuum, AKA, a black hole, and it begins sucking things into it.Before the TMNT in that demension are sucked away, the turtles from Future saves them. In the end, Future Mike and Future Leo are saved and now it is time to send the turtles back. In doing so, they send the TMNT into a time portal. As it rains, and the two turtles look upward... We hear some last words from future Leo and Future Don as the movie ends?.
Don- "I don't know what to say."
Leo- "There's nothing to say, that the rain can't say better."

Here is a breff summary of the nonanimated tmnt 4 movie. It is rated "R". Have fun!!

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES IV:            PASTLIVES

I been a Ninja Turtle fan since I was a little kid and I loved the first two movies. The third sucked ass. Anyway I beleive that John Woo would make The Turtles very action packed with alot of bad ass ninja moves and action scenes. Now that all of us that use to see the Turtles when we were kids would now like to see them meaner and more agressive than ever. I would like to see Leonardo Kick ass with his swords like Blade does lol! Thats just me. I hope it doesnt look to fake and annimated like John woo did with "The Hulk" (he went over board with that one.) I would like to see the next Ninja Turtles Movie be Rated-R for action and violence but I beleive they want to target PG-13. Over all I hope they finally make the movie and have a actual fact release date.

I think that a Ninja Turtles 4 with real live ppl would be the best thing they've ever thought of, specially rated r or 13 is not bad.... I also would like to see them more agressive and use those killer weapons... These 3D animated cartoons is chill but I think if I speak for all of us, we would like a real kick ass movie way better ....

well its now 2004, and no movie? and this whole dark side of the turtles although was true in the comics will most likley not be a part of this movie. why u ask because there is a cartoon series that has gone on for a year now that got kids back to the turtles, so parents wont be letting a 9 year old got to a R rated movie, also todd macfarlane was to do the toys but not anymore because of his dark vision for them

It looks like no one can read in hear, or just repeats themselves.  I owned all four of the graphic novels and the original turtles were rude, violent, bloody, and baddass.  Shredder was sadistic.  Some of the main storylines were mixed into the first movie, but they made the turtles more teenage like and kinda retarded.  The turtles in the comics were far more serious, especially Raphael.  He had the fiery temper, and he did get his ass handed to him by hundreds of foot soldiers.  I remember a scene where all four fight Shredder on top of a building, and Leonardo runs him through with his Katanas.  Then Shredder sets a thermo gernade, and Raphael throws his sais, knocking Shredhead off the building, just as the gernade goes off, but there is no sign of him later.  What ever happened to this project??
