SUPERMAN Casting Confirmed By SINGER!
By Wind(up)bird on October 20, 2004 4:47 AM
The folks over at aintitcool.com have posted to accounts of people attending screenings wherein director Bryan Singer (X-Men, X2, Usual Suspects) has spoken to the rumors of Superman having been cast. Brandon Routh is the man. We think.I just attended the screening of X2: X Men United at the Arclight Cinemas in Hollywood tonight, where Brian Singer made a special appearance and answered some questions regarding the movie. People filled out cards with questions and turned them in and he answered them directly.
I decided to go for the gold and ask about Superman, and he actually addressed my question. My question was, "What can you tell us about Superman?" and he asked me point blank, "What do you want to know?"
Since the news about Brandon Routh being casted hasn't really been officially been confirmed by the WB, as far as I know, I asked that first, and he responded first by correcting my pronunciation of his name (Rowth) and then said, "As of today, yes. He's Superman. He has the perfect physicality for the role and will be great."
He then went on to tell us about how he actually pitched his idea to Richard Donner, director of the original Superman movie, to get his approval first. Donner apparently loved it and then Singer went to Warner Brothers with his idea.
He's going to stay very true to Donner's vision of the Superman mythos, saying that the three most important aspects of the character are young Clark, the Clark facade, and Superman himself.
He asked if there was anything else and I presented him with the most important aspect I could think of. "Will you use John Williams music in the movie?"
He looked at me dead on and said very boldly, "Yes. Definitely yes."
The audience went nuts with this news.
This is going to be an incredible movie. It couldn't possibly be in better hands.

I THINK IT'S A BAD IDEA TO USE THIS GUY. THE WB SHOULD USE CLARK OFF OF SMALLVILLE! HE PLAYS SUPERMAN WELL AND IS KNOWN BY AN AUDIENCE. WHY WOULD YOU USE A NOBODY WHEN THERE IS ALREADY A SHOW ABOUT SUPERMAN ON THE WB?

I agree with the other schlep... Tom Welling from Smallville is excellent as Clark. He'd be a great choice.

Christopher Reeve was a nobody when he was originally cast. The guy from smallville looks too much like a girl anyway.

No one knows, but apparently Singer thinks he's the guy for the job so that's good enough for me.

Tom Welling does NOT look like a girl, what are you smoking? He'd be perfect for this film.
btw: I'm a girl, I know what I'm talking about.

(rolls eyes) Oh course a girl would want Tom Welling to be her superman.. lol. sheesh.
Honestly now. No way..
Tv stars espcially that from the WB..eeesh, should stay there.
And I agree, Reeve wasnt famous till he hit the blue tights and red cape. And he did greeeat. Miss him already

A man would call him hot too because I know for damn sure he IS. You people may not find him attractive, well because none of you are homosexual (most likely). He totally fits, how can you not agree? And what's wrong with the WB? How critical.

Well.. its just... well .. the show kinda painted itself on a corner already.
And.. look. First episode.. i was very happy because Tom was actually a nerd trying to make ends meet as he would progressively learn of his powers.
My interest was peak.
Something I feel I can atleast stick my imagination in and relate to more than seeing a bunch of perfect super model faces, both guy and girls throwing their tiresome soap opera acting about whos cheating on who and when Lana will ever find out who Clark really is and blah blah.
I mean Lana? She doesnt even end up with Clark in the first place. (Sticking to original story, the girl gets knocked up and married to some drunk jerk.)Clark ends up with Lois Lane. So why soo much attention to Lana? ..meh drama.
But because the original premise wasnt as popular and the show was probably looking at possible cancellation, the WB decided to make the entire story work for its prized viewers..women. And basically turn it into something along the lines of One Tree Hill.. and thats a cool show.. but you know..
What happened to Superman.
The largest WB viewing population Id have to say, are women. Since the WB site's forum is comprised with females going back and forth about who'd they trade their hubbies and bf's for. lol.
Gilmore Girls is cute show, One Tree Hill is funny sometimes, and the babes are hot.. yeah yeah, and all that stuff.
But again, keeping to a "comic book" story level, Smallville just aint it. Sorry. Atleast not for me.
And I'm a loyal comic book artist for 7 years now. I know what Im talking about too. =] lol.
Heh.. but thats soo irrelevant I hope you understand.
Don't take any offense. Its just an opinion of a boy who loved Reeve's Superman.
(Theyre not going to use Tom Welling btw, the producers opinions is almost similar about adapting the same tv actors to the big screen)
One thing directors hate doing, is being repetitious/stagnant. They usually like to take things into their own sometimes interesting, hands, and recreate a property.
This has been my two cents.. again.
Take care and cross your fingers!

I only occasionally saw Smallville but for me it just didn't work. Like, I hated hoe Kriptonite was always used as a plot device, like "Well, Superman could easily stop this so what do we do? I know lets have some Kriptonite affect him!" Ever episode.

I think he would make a good Superman! He is a good actor and already known by the public. Also a superman comic fan, Lana and Clark do go out in high school...

It's the guy in that picture at the top. As for Tom Welling, well anyone who hasn't seen Smallville won't have a clue who he is and IMO I think he looks like too much of a 'pretty boy' to play Superman. Superboy maybe, but not Superman.

Personally, I think it's a great move to cast an unknown in the role as it makes it easier for the audience to make the leap that this is Superman flying around on the screen and not such and such an actor simply dressed up like Superman.

I should be Superman because I am Superman! HaHaHa! Seriously I think I will wait to see the movie, or at least the trailer before I comment on it. I hope it will be a good one though.

Tom Welling is great in Smallville, but I don't think he has the weight to play an adult Superman. The guy I'VE always wanted to see as Superman is Bruce Campbell. He even looks like Supes, and we all know that he can act. But hey - that's just MY opinion. At least I hope they'll let Bruce play Supes in the upcoming JLA movie (at least there SHOULD be an upcoming JL movie, am I right?).

I honestly believe that it is kinda cool that they are using a no named person for the new superman. Tom Welling by far is one of my favs tho, next to Chris that is. But from what I have seen and heard they are already screwing up this new movie. They already have Superman 1 - 4, in those movies they already told what happened to Martha and Jonathan and now they are bringing them back..WHY??
I have been a Superman fan for about 10 years now. Clark and Lana never happen, Lois and Clark do. Lets leave it that way and go about our business. As for the WB series of Smallville, My personal favorite TV show, I think that they are just taking the life of CK that was never printed and and making a pretty decent story out of it. Season five is alittle of the scale trying to bring the Superman Movies into the show but as a whole I like it.
So yeah I like the fact that they are using a new guy for superman but I prefer Tom Welling, he knows the part and he looks it, He should have taken it.
