Topic: News ALIEN VS PREDATOR: More Bad News
By Charley on August 6, 2004 1:04 PM

The final cut of "Alien vs Predator" is still not finished, despite the film's scheduled release date of August 13th--one week from today--according to IESB.  This latest news does not bode well for what already seems to be a lackluster production.  Can they rush edit a PG-13 action-horror movie with no starpower, no press junkets, no world premiere, and still make it profitable?

According to the article, the editors "are not confident that it will be done by opening day. To make things worse 20th Century Fox has had to cancel the Junket for the film because they know that the print will not be ready in time. Junkets are normally held 1 to 2 weeks prior of the release date so the journalists can see the film and interview the talent involved and finally review the film. Even the films Red Carpet World Premiere that was going to be held at the Grauman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood on August 10th has been cancelled due to the same problem."

At this point it seems like the film can't win.  Will they push back the release or rush it through editing?  If they push it back, will they put it up against "Exorcist: The Beginning," or between "Exorcist" and "Resident Evil: Apocalypse"?  Or will they save it until Halloween or Christmas?

Only time will tell, but whatever happens, it does not look good.

I wonder what all the kids in the other forums make of this, you know, the ones who say things like: "Shut the fuck up! Preds rok so hard and aliens sux they will not win!!!"

No Alien or Predator movie should ever have to suffer the humiliation of being a PG-13, However I don't think the filmmakers should be too worried about going up againt the new Exorcist or Resident Evil movies.

every single Aliens movie and every single Predators movie has been rated R.

the only reason they would  turn something so scary into pg-13 is to whore the money from teenagers.

tremendously stupid move FOX!

This is going to suck like aliens 3 and 4 and predator 2.  Then they'll have to fix it again with a director's cut just like all of aliens and predators movies.

I think the theatrical release of this is gonna suck.

I totally disagree with you.  The other movies were rated R because of the human gore aspect and language.  This movie is focusing on ALIEN and PREDATORS fighting it out.  The humans are there to move the story along.  Plus there have been plenty of great PG-13 films.  The orginal Batman, The Village, Bounre Supremacy just name a few titles.  So all this moaning graoning is meaningless.  AvP will be what you make of it.  I am going into with no expectations so I'll will probably enjoy it.

All I know is that the Aliens won't be biting anyones face off and the Predator won't be skining people, i.e: it will suck.

You really amaze me that just because some poor sap isn't getting eaten that means the movie will suck.  Aliens only had two scenes that had any real gore.  The Chest Burster scene with Newt's Mom and the Dropship Pilot getting attacked during the evac.  The movie was mostly R rated due to the language.  Now I'll agree the Predator movies are pretty high on the gore factor.  But with both facts in mind realize that there will be plenty of Alien and Predator gore.  The human aspect will be masked with the Predator's vision mode.  That however doesn't make the movie suck.  Check out this latest clip and then tell me how bad it will suck.  AVP Face Off Clip  I thought this clip was really cool.

Is Aliens the only movie you saw? What about the chest bursting scene in the first one, or the guy getting the back of his head bitten off in Resurrection and picking out part of his brain? All I'm saying is that both the Alien and Predator movies have become renound for their high gore factor as much as anything else and with this new film carrying a PG-13 rating it will mean that the new film won't be living up to the standards of previous films.

I agree the last two Alien movies had a lot of gore.  I also realize they both SUCKED!!  The last two movies almost ruined the franchise.  That's the main reason I didn't mention them.  Alien vs Predator is gonna have some really good fighting and story.  Paul Anderson has made a big effort to tie this movie to the others films together.  I still say that you don't need a lot of gore to have a good action movie.  You only need gore when the story is weak.  I don't think AVP will have that problem.

hey mate, i agree with you, the movie looks pretty class, u can tell by the trailers they have released, they're all very good and exciting. Its a shame about it not beeing ready for main release, and they mat have to rush and edit the film. i'd rather wait and get the whole version than a chopped up one.

That's another reason why I think the movie will probably suck, the director, I mean he did Mortal Kombat, what else do you need to know?

RE: this is shaping up to suck   > reply
Posted by Broken_Tusk (No Email) on August 12, 2004 7:21 AM

He also did Resident Evil as well.  Resident Evil was his first film that made a profit.  If I remember correctly it grossed like 6 million over what it cost to make the film in the US and 26 million Worlwide.  Check this link out for the facts  Resident Evil Box Office Gross.  Paul Anderson is getting better and as he directs more films he will continue to do so.   What you seem to be missing is that Paul Anderson is a young director.  I'm sure all directors even the greats had a few films that sucked when they first started out.  That's like me expecting you to be an incredible expert at a job after doing it 6 times.  Somehow I think you would still be very green.  So please give me and everyone else a break!  If you are so convinced this movie will suck then don't see it.  It's as easy as that.  I can't speak for everyone but I'm growing tired of your "this film will suck" posts.  Sorry for the rant everyone. :)

Oh one more thing while I'm at it.  If Mortal Kombat was so bad why did it gross 50+ million over the production costs?  Just in case you don't believe me check this link out for proof, Mortal Kombat Box Office Gross.  I personally thought the first Mortal Kombat  was quite good.  The second however needed help but then again Paul Anderson didn't direct it.  I thought a few more nails in your coffin was in order. :)

Just because a movie makes money doesn't make it good, dumbass.

To remind ourselves, ladies and gentlemen, why we loved this franchise in the first place... It was really terrifying. Alien (and to a lesser extent Predator) movies were supposed to scare and entertain you, the haunted house theme, the pure animal v our morally corrupt selves, our fear of being hunted, the unknown etc. To take two franchises that should have meshed together perfectly (see the Dark Horse comics for proof of this) and then try and shoehorn the concept of two alien races fighting to the death into a PG13 film says a couple of things about the studio that allowed this. 1) The toy and shirt line must be very lucrative. 2) Studio execs spend money without fully understanding their investment (working out profit and loss on a calculator based on the performace of the last movies, factoring in the new target demographic and any additinal advertising costs doesn't count guys.). Honestly, anyone, if you were personally going to spend any substantial amount of cash on anything, wouldn't you at least find out the detail of what it was you were buying to see it it was really what you wanted. There are franchises of PG13 aliens out there for this kind of thing (Independance Day, MIB) so you can rake in the merchandising buck. This isn't it. Either do the franchise justice or realise that you'll never make any more money out of it (which is the name of the game after all), or do something I haven't seen in the film industry for a while, create an original idea so you can do what you like with it and nobody will be expecting anything different. You never know, you might get a sequel out of it...

I swear when they offer brain transplants sign yourself up.  If a movie isn't any good then guess what it doesn't make any money.  Maybe if you did a little research on your theory you would find this to be true.  I promise you won't find a good movie that didn't make a profit.  The inverse is also true.  Bad movies flop and don't make a profit.  Kull: The Conqueor is an example and  Mortal Kombat 2 is another.  I challenge you to find an example to disprove my arguement.  That is if you are up to the task.

When the Shawshank Redemption was released in cinemas it bombed, it wasn't until people discovered it on video rental that its popularity took off. Charlies Angels 2 made a pretty hufty sum at the box-office even though it was one of the crapist films in years.
Your argument that only good films make money is wrong.

No it just means your opinion means less than you thought it did.

Strangely I expected Aliens vs. Predator to suck going in to the theater and I walked out feeling that it really did fail to suck.  But then again I didn't go in with any expectations of  what the story was going to be about.  All I really did expect was a lot of slashing and body parts and probably to be disappointed since Aliens 3 and 4 and Predator 2 were so bad- despite Danny Glover.

To my surprise, in my opinion alone, as someone who loved Predator and Alien and Aliens but hated all the other movies in the series:

1) It had a decent story.
2) The premise wasn't bad.  It was used by Stargate, but hey, if you studied archaeology you know it wasn't just about the Egyptians.
3) Story progression wasn't bad.  Everything had a purpose and everything had a reason for being there.  There was a plan of what was supposed to happen and what did happen that screwed it up.

4) The editing definitely needed help, but we all knew going in they were behind schedule.  I'm looking forward to the director's cut.

Overall in the Alien and Predator genre, it's definitely taken 4th position behind Alien, Aliens, and Predator.  Granted that wasn't hard, but as a movie it does stand on its own.

Don't take my word or anyone else's word on it.  If you think you're capable of going into the theater to be entertained without expectations or preconceived notions filling your mind, this is a good movie for you.  If not, skip it.  No one wants to hear you whine.

If you have expectations of what the movie should be about then you'll definitley be disappointed.  The movie as a whole is definitely better than the ad campaign makes it look.

And by the looks of things, the movie is just a setup for bigger things to come.

I'd definitely recommend this movie to people who aren't rabid Alien and Predator freaks.

Fans of the genres should definitely see it and decide for themselves if they can set their expectations aside.  Better yet, have really low expectations like I did by watching Alien Resurrection before you see Alien vs. Predator.  Alien v. Predator is a WAY better film.  You don't realize how much better until you remember how BAD the others were.

Finally to the freaks, don't see AvP so we don't have to listen to you whine.

>When the Shawshank Redemption was released in cinemas it bombed,

That's called bad marketing.  The ads for it sucked.  No one wants to see a movie with sucky ads.

>it wasn't until people discovered it on video rental that its popularity took off.

That's called word of mouth.  Wow, that movie didn't suck like the ads made it look!  Amazing!

>Charlies Angels 2 made a pretty hufty sum at the box-office even though it was one of the crapist films in years.

CA2 had something called good marketing.  Obviously they got their message across and lots of people wanted to see it.  Obviously it did well despite your standards because in that case your standards obviously aren't representative of the movie going public.

I know!  Let's go throw our money away and see a movie that's been in the theater for 10 weeks that we know everyone hates and no one wants to see!

>Your argument that only good films make money is wrong.

Your definition of good is only in your mind.  Get used to it.

So you're saying that The Shawshank Redemption was not a good movie and that Charlies Angels 2 was? Well ok, I mean it's your own opinion and everthing.
