I must say I am shocked and disappointed yet again by moviegoers of the world. You, the public, never cease to amaze me in your narrowmindedness and eagerness to shit on anything that's different from what you expect. Will people never stop complaining about the Oompa Loompas not being the moderately annoying orange butterballs of the 70's?
This movie is not a remake of the Gene Wilder classic (and classic it is)!!! It is NOT a sequel! This is Tim Burton's vision of a classic piece of literature. I find the man's style to be fascinating and very artful. He's true to the book, he even used the original Oompa Loompa songs from the novel. It's not BASED on the book, it's the movie version OF the book! The Gene Wilder version, while a very good movie, was nowhere near as true to the book as this one. And while Roald Dahl may have been on the scene, that doesn't mean that Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is the DEFINITIVE version of Dahl's whimsical novel. But, I will say, NEITHER is Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (The movie). Different director's have different visions, but Tim Burton's work is much much MUCH truer to the book.
Next, I would love to see people stop picking at Johnny Depp's look in this movie. I thought it was perfect. Willy Wonka is an eccentric candymaking genius, so the funny haircut and the wierd clothes are to be expected. And the pale skin? The man had not been outside in several years, OF COURSE he's going to be pale. He doesn't look like Michael Jackson, and Marilyn Manson would NOT have been a better pick.
I deeply respect Mr. Depp for his amazing ability to completely disappear into his character when he does a movie. The man is one of the great actors of our time, and I wish the general populus was intelligent enough to be able to see talent. I'm not saying that Depp is the ONLY great actor, but he is definitely very talented. You don't have to like him, but he at least deserves to be recognized for his talent.
Now, I would personally be a very happy individual if the idiots of the world would realize that just because a movie isn't what they saw as a child, it's wrong. It's the attitude like that that got Pudding banned in Protestant England way back when. That attitude that causes people to become recluses and hermits and hate the world for not meeting their expectations. The people who refuse to be open to different versions of things will have an increasingly difficult time being happy. To really get the most out of life, it's important to be open and enjoy things for what they really are.
This is a beautifully done movie and a work of art. I for one will never forget it. I just wish I could do a simple web search without seeing people who have nothing better to do than to complain about things being different.
