I dont think that mirovingian was a prior the one. He may be a the real creator of the matrix before he was repkaced by the architect and put into exile. Once in exile he was by far the most powerful program so he was able to preside over and control all the other exiled programs. He doesnt side with the humans as shown when he woould not give up the keymaker. But he is alsp not loyal to the machines as je was replaced by them and put into exile. I think that a good ending to rovolutions would have involved Merovingian more. Since he is loyal neither to the machines or humans,Neo could have somehow "recruited" him and made an alliance that would help Neo defeat the machines. Neo would entice Merovingian to help him by promising him power (what he used to have more of and what he now most desires) and then betray Merovingian in the end. This ending would satisfy the majority of viewers who wanted an interesting and conclusive ending with a twist.
