Ain't it Cool News has posted an excerpt from an interview with Mel Brooks ("Blazing Saddles," "Spaceballs," "Young Frankenstein") in which he talks about a sequel to "Spaceballs," a "Star Wars" spoof that has so much potential for an encore now that Episodes 1-3 are in the can.
Brooks told Playbill (a theater trade) that he intended to reprise his role as Yogurt, a spoof of Yoda from the "Star Wars" series. "I'm writing myself back into the 'Spaceballs' sequel that I'm now writing, so you haven't seen the last of my face," he said. In "Spaceballs," Brooks also played President Skroob, the leader of the evil Planet Spaceball.
When asked about a release date for "Spaceballs 2," Brooks had this to say: "Best case scenario : a week before the new 'Star Wars' opens. Worst Case Scenario : a year after the new 'Star Wars' opens." Presumably, he will write, direct, and star in the film.
The original "Space Balls" was released in 1987. Brooks, the sultan of movie spoofs, will find more damning material in the "Star Wars" prequels than he'll know what to do with. On the other hand, he may have trouble distinguishing himself this time around, as most people already thought Episodes 1 and 2 were spoofs.
The original starred Bill Pullman ("Independence Day"), Rick Moranis ("Little Shop of Horrors"), and John Candy ("Uncle Buck"). There is no word on casting for the sequel yet.
