It's a dark and rather funny story about a Yuppie who leads a double life as a serial killer. The result: not your ordinary slasher flick. Boldly mixing conventions from the genres of horror, melodrama, and comedy, American Psycho (based on the novel by Bret Easton Ellis) provides a witty, complex, and fascinating critique of the 80s, masculinity, and corporate culture. Apart from the fact that there are detours into B-movie horror terrain that are arguably less satisfying, (An unpleasant scene in which Bateman wields a chainsaw on a pair of prostitutes inevitably reminds us of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) this film was very well made and equally well acted. Conclusion: I'd say American Psycho certainly isn't for everyone. If you can't laugh at the intense violence that goes on on-screen, you're going to hate this movie. I give it a 8/10 rating |
