PS3 will not start: anatomy of a dead ps3

Every gamer dreads the day when their ps3 will not start. No early warnings, no notices whatsoever, it'll just ceased to turn on.


With a playstation 3 will not start problem, that simply means you can't play games anymore. Likewise, there is a chance that you might not be able to recover your saved games and files in it as well. If you still have a warranty on your ps3, you can still bring it back to Sony for replacement, but there's no guarantee that you can still get your files back. Ouch!!!


PS3 will not start: knowing the cause to know the solution

A PS3 will not start issue can be a very confusing and tricky problem. But you can isolate the main cause by testing and observation.


If what you see is a yellow light, then you got YLoD or Yellow Light of Death, which is a major hardware failure problem. Many instance of people whose playstation 3 will not start have been traced to a hard drive problem. Overheating of the main boards due to poor or defective ventilation of the game console can likewise cause it to fail.


Try to make sure you place the ps3 in a well ventilated area. Check if the console is getting too hot instead of just being warm.


You can also try removing the hard drive as a test, and attempt to power on the ps3. Even without the harddrive, you will be able to see some significant change if still the ps3 will not start, or if does power on to a certain level before telling you there's no hard drive in it.
