 An uproar has arisen in Britain over Anthony Hopkins' decision to become an American citizen. Part of Hopkins' U.S. oath of allegiance, which he took on Wednesday, called for him to "renounce the title of nobility to which I have heretofore belonged." Although an official at the British consulate in Los Angeles said later that Hopkins could continue to use the title "Sir" in the U.K., the London Daily Express today (Friday) quoted a Buckingham Palace source as saying, "We are not aware of any precedent for a British knight becoming a citizen of a foreign country and are consulting the Foreign Office. In Sir Anthony's case it seems unlikely he is going to have strong feelings either way." Hopkins has previously said that he accepted the title only because it made his wife happy. The two are estranged. |
