Just two weeks before the Oscars, American Beauty piled up new prizes over the weekend as it won top awards from the Directors Guild of America and the Screen Actors Guild. Accepting the DGA award, first-time film director Sam Mendes thanked Steven Spielberg, whose DreamWorks studio produced American Beauty, for "giving a bloke from England a movie about the American suburbs and letting me make the movie I wanted to make." At the SAG Awards Sunday night, the entire cast of the movie earned the best ensemble award. Angelina Jolie won the best supporting actress award for Girl, Interrupted, while Michael Caine won the best supporting actor award for The Cider House Rules. Read more... |
