Who Gets to Pay for Digital Cinemas?

(NT) At $100,000 or more for a digital projector, the cost would approach $4 billion in the United States alone to install digital systems for the nation's 37,000 cinema screens.?Traditional film projectors typically cost $25,000 to $30,000 The studios really want this to ease distribution, but the theatres are too cheap to pay for the systems.?Few people realize how much hype is thrown into digital projection.?The specified resolution is less than HDTV, and film adds so much to the atmosphere of watching a movie.?The industry seems to be completely ignoring MaxiVision technology, which I would love to see happen.?It's far superior to digital projection and costs about 10% of what is needed to replace the current projectors with digital ones.?It doesn't make distribution of film any easier, though.

Damn right, I believe that all this digital film stuff is over-hyped. Sure, digital makes it easier for most filmmakers to produce their movies, and it also gains entry for those of us who do not have film labs, but to play it in theatres simply costs too much money. The fact that HDTV has a higher resolution also makes me question: Why use digital projection? Call me old fashioned, but I still think film is... FILM.

I am tired of it too   > reply

If the people that make this stuff REALLy want it to go big, then they need to drop their prices, or streamline their production of the machines or something.
