Clinton to Announce Cyber Security Center

(CNN)-President Bill Clinton on Tuesday will endorse the creation of a national cyber security center where Internet and e-commerce companies can work together to cope with hacker attacks, administration officials said.?"These denial of service attacks obviously are very disturbing," Clinton said during an online interview with CNN.com.?"And I think there is a way that we can clearly promote security." Clinton also urged consumers not to panic over last week's attacks against e-commerce Web sites.?He predicted: "We'll figure out how to do it, and go forward." The president is expected to announce the initiative to create a voluntary, private-sector network to monitor and respond to hacker attacks after meeting Tuesday at the White House with more than a dozen computer executives and academics who specialize in computer technology.?Participants will include Charles Wang, chairman of Computer Associates International Inc.; Howard Schmidt, chief information security officer at Microsoft Corp.; Harris Miller, head of the Information Technology Association of America; and "Mudge," a member of a hacker think tank that does security consulting under the name AtStake.?The president plans to ask Congress for $9 million to help create the center.?The administration action is in response to a blizzard of hacker attacks that disabled some of the nation's most popular Web sites, among them CNN.com, eBay, Yahoo, Amazon.com and E*Trade.?More ...?
