Chronic Urticaria: Whats that rash on your skin?

Chronic Urticaria is an itchy rash that affects the skin. The rash is usually itchy, and can appear in any area of the skin.


In general, Urticaria can be classified as Acute Urticaria and Chronic Urticaria. Acute Urticaria can last less than six weeks, with most cases lasting within 24 to 48 hours. On the other hand, Chronic Urticaria is a persistent one, lasting as much as months or even years in very rare cases.


Chronic Urticaria often can be seen as areas of the skin where there are small raised areas that eventually develops into rashes. These raised areas are called weals. Circular in shape, weals can form beside each other, or can in different areas. They also look like mild blisters and are very itchy. Some weals can even combine to form a bigger weal.

Chronic Urticaria are said to be caused by some kind of allergy, although the real concrete cause is not clear yet. There appears to be a trigger that causes chemicals like histamine to be released from the cells in the skin. Such chemicals can further cause leaks from small blood vessels under the skin surface. Moreover, the said trigger can come from different sources, such as food, worms, and even other medicines. The itchiness can be releaved with antihistamine tablets or syrups.


People with chronic urticaria can have difficulty sleeping because of the itchiness. There are also known cases wherein chronic urticaria can also cause difficulty in breathing in some.
