Regiment records information.
Regiment records also known as regimental records are military records. People often look this kind of records when they want to find out more about their family history. Historians also find regiment records quite useful as part of their history researches. Military veterans may need copies of their own regimental records for various reasons (insurance, health benefits and so on).
Whatever your reason to look for regiment records might be, it is good to know where to address your search. In general regimental records are not difficult to find, although some access restrictions may apply to certain types of records.
How to obtain regimental records.
The best place to search for regimental records is at the National Archives. This is the official U.S government agency collecting and managing military archives and records.
A regiment record can be obtained by submitting a formal request in writing. This is done by filling in and posting a standard record request form. There are several types of forms depending on the records you want to obtain. You need to know the name of the person whose records you want to get, the years of service and in which military regiment they were appointed. Some records can be obtained only by their owners of next of kin; other records require authorization by the owner in order to be obtained; there are also records free for anybody to view.
