How to obtain army national guard records.

National army records can be found at The National Archives. The National Archives is located in Washington, D.C. Some of the army national guard records are kept by The National Military Personnel Center - one of the biggest departments of The National Archives.

Army records can be requested by veterans, soldiers, next of kin of veterans or other legal representatives as well as by members of the general public. However there are some records that are not available for public access unless approved by the owner of the records or their authorized representatives.

  • Check which department is responsible for the records. Usually records of veterans discharged, retired or deceased in different years are kept by different departments.

  • Check what documents are required to request the records. Usually this is done with a standard form 180.

  • Complete the request form as accurately as you can as the amount of information you provide can influence the speed of the search.

  • Post the form to The National Archive and wait for the results.

In general most of the records can be requested free of charge. In some cases however there might be fees for requesting specific records. All record requests are answered for about 20 working days however sometimes a search may take longer.
