What information can be obtained by secret service records or intelligence records?
Intelligence records as well as almost any secret service record can be freely accessed by members of the general public. This is possible due to The Freedom of Information Act. The same legislation determines the way in which intelligence records can be accessed.
US intelligence records can be obtained by The National Archives. Each person who want to get copies of a secret service record should file an official request. This can be done either by post or in person by completing, dating and signing an application form. There are different types of forms for the different types of records and blank forms can be requested by contacting The National Archives.
Are there any costs for requesting intelligence records?
Most of the record requests made to The National Archives are free of charge. However there might be charges applicable to some types of records especially of numerous photocopies are required.
Another way to obtain a secret service records is by searching an online public records database. These web sites are usually connected to all government and proprietary public record databases and can be used for a fast and efficient search. Even if you need to get official copies of intelligence records an online search is a good way to gather all the information needed for filling the official request.
