Army board of correction military records
Correction military records can be used for various purposes - for providing proof of military service, claiming benefits, correcting an error or even as a genealogical research tool.
The Army Board of Correction Military Records (ABCMR) is the government institution that manages military records corrections. Correction military records can be obtained pretty easily as long as you know where to start your search. Veterans, soldiers, next of kin or any legal representative of veterans can apply for correction military records.
How correction to military records is done.
Correction to military records can be requested by veterans or soldiers. Here are the main steps of the process.
First you need to request a correction to military records by filling in and submitting and application for correction - DD form 149. The application can be obtained by contacting the ABCMR human resource office or downloaded from the Internet. As mentioned above, unless you are the owner of the records, you need to prove your relationship to the owner. Documents such as marriage certificate, death certificate or power of attorney can be used as proof of relationship. You should also include copies of the military records which should be corrected. These copies can be requested prior making a request for correction. You can get military records by The National Archives or by searching in an online public records database.
