Getting GI records
GI records, also known as government issued records and serviceman records can be obtained by The National Archive. An increasing number of people search the archives in need of gi records. The reasons vary - some need copies of their own records for claiming benefits, proving military service or to request corrections made to their records. Other look up serviceman records in effort to reconstruct their family history.
No matter what your reason is, if you need to search GI records, you better learn some of the basics of any military record search.
How to obtain GI records or serviceman records.
As mentioned above GI records and serviceman records can be found at The National Archive. There are various departments and each one manages different type of records so the first thing you should do is to check which department of The National Archive is responsible for the records you need to get.
After you have located the department taking care of the records you want to obtain, you need to get a request form, complete it, date it, sign it and submit it. Completing the request form may be a challenging task especially if you are not the owner of the record you are trying to obtain. The information required in the form concerns the person service and social security number, date of enlistment and separation, places of enlistment and separation, type of service and so on. Once you get this done, you just need to wait for the records to be posted back to you.
