Where to search for heavy artillery records?
Public artillery records can be requested from The National Personnel Records Center. This is one of the official offices responsible for US military public record archives.
If you need to find heavy artillery records, you will have to complete and submit a standard form 180. Some public records are only available to their owners or next of kin of the owners. Other records can be obtained only if you get the owner's consent. However there are many artillery records that are freely available to the general public. When requesting copies of artillery records, you need to complete SF 180 as accurately as you can as this can greatly affect the time required for the records search.
How to complete artillery record SF 180?
If you need to obtain a copy of your own artillery record, you will probably not have any difficulties completing SF180. However if you are looking for the heavy artillery record of a family member or someone else, you may not have sufficient information to complete the form.
Luckily there is an easy way out of this situation. The best way to gather sufficient information about someone's military history is to perform a military public record search online. There are many public record web sites that will allow you to search for artillery records. The greatest advantage of the online search is that you will need the name of the person only. Once you have the artillery record in from of you, you will be able to collect the information required to complete the official SF180.
